His representatives have denied the media reports, but by all accounts, David Beckham is headed to Paris St. Germain, where he will be paid a salary double what he made with the Los Angeles Galaxy. At 36 and with a recent history of injuries, Beckham's value to PSG is debatable. But as the French great Michel Platini, now president of UEFA, famously said, if Beckham is coming to Paris, it isn't to play soccer.

Beckham is part of a game of geopolitics that involves France and Qatar at the highest levels.

Qatar is scheduled to host the 2022 World Cup and needs to legitimize its place as a player on the international soccer scene.

Just as they bought the World Cup, the Qatari royals have set out to buy everything that is big and beautiful in the world of soccer.

For the first time ever, Barcelona -- the best team in the world by a mile -- has agreed to accept money to give someone the right to put its name on the front of its jersey. That someone is something called the Qatar Foundation, operated by the Qatar government, and the amount is $230 million over five years.

The inside connection: Barcelona president Sandro Rosell, whose sports marketing agency, Bonus Sports Marketing, helped establish the Aspire Football Dreams program that is believed to have done much of Qatar's grassroots bidding on its World Cup 2022 campaign.

In the case of Paris St. Germain, the Qatari crown prince, Sheik Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, has gone one step further and bought a 70 percent stake in the club through Qatar Sports Investments.

On the television front, Al-Jazeera, the Qatar-owned Arab broadcaster, has moved into France and started buying up soccer rights: French cable rights to Ligue 1 games each Friday and Sunday and most recently the UEFA Champions League and overseas rights to Ligue 1 matches.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the chairman of Qatar Sports Investments and the person responsible for running PSG, is also the head of sports at Al-Jazeera.

The Qatari-French link goes to the top of the French government, where President Nicolas Sarkozyhas developed close ties to the Qatari royals.

According to the French magazine So Foot, Sarkozy organized a meeting on Nov. 23, 2010 -- nine days before the World Cup 2022 was awarded -- at which were present Platini, Al-Thani andSebastien Bazin, the European representative of Colony Capital, the American investment firm that owned PSG. The subject: Qatar's possible investment in PSG.

Platini denies his 2022 vote for Qatar -- one of the European votes the USA coveted -- was on orders from Sarkozy, but let's put it this way. He would have had a lot of explaining to do if he returned to Paris and the USA had won.

    So why Beckham?

PSG surely doesn't need him on the field. Yes, he enjoyed the best of his five seasons with the Galaxy, helping it win the MLS title, but he was given a very defined role in the middle of midfield to take advantage of what he could do and not do.

But Beckham will struggle in Ligue 1, a league that puts a premium on athleticism. Platini was blunt about the Englishman's move to PSG.

"I love this player but he is not the footballer he was," said Platini. "And if he comes to Paris now, it will be to do something other than football."

Beckham is a natural fit for the Qatar Sports Investments, a player whose worldwide fame far exceeds what he has accomplished on the field in his career.

During the World Cup 2018/22 race that pitted Qatar against England in opposing camps, Beckham was about the only person involved in the English bid effort who came of it with his reputation enhanced.

"David Beckham is bigger than sport," Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe. "He is an ambassador, a brand, an example for others." Then Al-Khelaifi added, "He is also and still a very good soccer player whose age isn't a problem."

Like Barcelona, Brand Beckham legitimizes Brand Qatar.

Here are five excellent ways to keep your knees as strong, flexible, and happily active as they can be:

Firm up your thighs. It's like installing shock absorbers for your knees. Strengthening your front and back thigh muscles (quadriceps and hamstrings) helps protect the knee joints from injury. Increasing quad strength can also cut your risk of knee osteoarthritis by up to 30%.

Walk backward. It gives your quads a slightly different workout while going easy on a particularly vulnerable knee zone, the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), a joint connector that women and athletes frequently tear. Have your true love be your spotter, so you don't trip on bad sidewalks.

Go low-impact. You gotta' keep moving to improve your range of motion and build the muscles that surround and support your knees. Just don't pound them (nix pavement running and high-impact aerobics). Instead, go easy with walking, swimming, yoga, biking, elliptical machines or padded treadmills, and weight work. (Get in the mood to shape up and slim down.)

Feed your knees. The inflammation-fighting nutrients in berries, ginger, avocado, flaxseeds, omega-3-rich fish (trout, salmon) or the DHA type of omega-3 supplements all help stifle joint damage. (Discover other tips for eating smart!)

Lose a few. Every extra pound you carry adds up to 3 pounds of pressure on your knee joints when you walk, and 10 pounds when you run. Ouch. (How old are your knee joints, really?)
Celtic legend McNeill 'hurt and disappointed' by actions of shameful fans

Celtic legend Billy McNeill has hit out at the unruly Hoops fans who have landed the club in the dock again.

UEFA confirmed on Monday they had opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic, charging the Glasgow club with 'the displaying of a banner of an offensive nature and the setting off of fireworks by supporters' during their Europa League game against Udinese in Italy last week.

The incidents came days after the club were fined £12,700 for 'illicit chanting' involving pro-IRA songs at a Europa League game against Rennes at Celtic Park.
In the dock: Celtic fans actions have upset a former hero

Following the game in Udine, Celtic manager Neil Lennon, chief executive Peter Lawwell and chairman Ian Bankier rounded on the rogue fans who had 'embarrassed' the Parkhead club.

This morning McNeill, former skipper and manager, told the Scottish Sun: 'This has left me hurt and disappointed. For generations, Celtic fans have had a great record in Europe.

'Now that record is in danger of being wrecked by these people - I struggle to call them fans.

'If these people have ruined everything for everyone then the club has to cut them out and get them away. Because God knows what will happen to the club if it's allowed to continue.'

The case will be heard by the UEFA's control and disciplinary body on January 26.
Scottish Premier League clubs have been given the green light to have safe-standing areas within their stadiums.

The SPL announced a relaxation of its rules on standing following a general meeting of all 12 clubs on Monday.

The league's chief executive Neil Doncaster said the move came in response to supporter demand.

"Whenever we talk to supporters about what they'd like to see, safe standing comes up as one of the things they'd like to see," he told BBC Scotland.

"Whilst there's a number of hurdles that clubs would need to overcome to re-introduce standing at their grounds, our rules are one of those hurdles.

"So, that's now out the way and that paves for clubs to come forward with pilot schemes if they have the support of their local police force and local safety committee to come forward and put forward pilot schemes that the SPL board can look at."

The perception from some that we're going to see the re-introduction of open terraces as was the case before is wide of the mark
    Neil Doncaster
    SPL chief executive
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman expressed surprise at the announcement, saying: "We have not had any detailed discussions with the SPL around the safe-standing areas.

"If the SPL would like to discuss the issue with us then perhaps we would be able to understand what the specific proposals are."

Terraces were banned following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and the issue of allowing some standing areas has been revisited since all-seater stadiums became compulsory in England in 1994.

Scotland is not bound by the law which banned standing areas in top-flight football in England, which came into force after the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster.

"That legislation was introduced in England back in the 80s," said Doncaster "In Scotland, I think there was a view that Scottish football was already well underway with making improvements at that time.

Interview - SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster
"The perception from some that we're going to see the re-introduction of open terraces as was the case before is wide of the mark. What we'll be looking at and what we'll be welcoming are pilot schemes put forward that look at the rail seating systems that we see, for example, in Germany.

"Having spent some time recently in Germany, looking at the systems at Borussia Dortmund, it's a fantastic system and it certainly does a great deal for the atmosphere within the ground and if it is introduced here, if we are able to get pilots away, hopefully we'll see the same here.

"The systems are fairly straight forward to police. There are some stadia where it simply wouldn't work but there are some stadia where it could work.

"Friday night football, safe standing areas; all of these are issues that are responding to supporter demand, looking at ways in-which we can improve the product and tempt people back through the turnstyles."

SPL rules currently state that clubs must only use seated areas with a minimum of 6,000 seats per stadium.

"The fans are standing anyway," Aberdeen manager Craig Brown told BBC 5Live. "So I think it's better to make it official and to have the police involved.

"I'm a traditionalist and I certainly enjoyed standing at a match.

The fans are a bit more involved when they are standing and can get more excited
    Craig Brown
    Aberdeen manager
"The fans are a bit more involved when they are standing and can get more excited.

"I'm not so sure it will make a big difference on attendances but I would imagine it would be less expensive to stand rather than sit."

Celtic, Rangers, Kilmarnock and Motherwell are known to be keen on exploring the possibility of introducing standing areas and St Johnstone would not rule it out but St Mirren have ruled out modifying their recently constructed stadium.

The English Premier League has indicated opposition to moves to reintroduce standing areas at top-flight football matches, while the Football Supporters' Federation is keen for their return.

Meanwhile, the SPL has also tightened the rules governing unacceptable conduct, to include: "using words, conduct or displaying any writing or other thing which indicates support for, or affiliation to, or celebration of, or opposition to an organisation proscribed in terms of the Terrorism Act 2000."

Doncaster said: "Changes to our rules on unacceptable conduct raise the bar in terms of what is expected of clubs and shows our clubs are committed to playing their part in tackling unacceptable conduct."

helsea manager Andre Villas-Boas admits Didier Drogba's Chelsea future remains unresolved—but insists Fernando Torres is going nowhere.
The prospect of both strikers remaining at the club has been thrown into doubt with Drogba tipped to follow Nicolas Anelka to China while there has been mounting speculation the Blues could be ready to cut their losses on Torres.
But Villas-Boas—whose side will attempt to secure a fourth successive Premier League win at Wigan this weekend—insists he is anxious to keep both forwards at Stamford Bridge.
Drogba, 33, has emerged as Villas-Boas's first choice striker during Chelsea's recent upturn in form but is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Speaking before the trip to Wigan, the manager admitted the length of any new deal was proving to be a sticking point—but is hopeful terms can be agreed.
"It's between a two-year and a one-year and we're waiting to make the best decision possible," Villas-Boas said.
"The situation is on-going and we hope to solve it. Whatever the outcome or agreement, or non-agreement, there will be no question of his professionalism and integrity and he will keep on representing Chelsea this season.
"Didier's importance is straightforward, it's not just because he is performing now. The conversation has been on-going since the beginning and we'll continue to push for that.
    Chelsea manager, Andre Villas-Boas
    Ian Kington, AFP/Getty Images
"It's not up to me to speak about what is in Didier's mind at the moment regarding his future.
"What I think is clear is that he is pretty much involved with Chelsea and his mindset is on competing with his colleagues for this club. That's the most gratifying thing, the commitment from the player. His professionalism is not in question."
Chelsea's season has been revived in the last two weeks with victory over Valencia securing a place in the last 16 of the Champions League before the 2-1 win over Manchester City left Villas-Boas's side just seven points off the pace in the Premier League.
Torres, though, has been forced to watch from the substitutes' bench, triggering reports the Spaniard might be offloaded for a cut-price £20 million, just 12 months after he arrived from Liverpool in a £50 million record deal.
Villas-Boas remains adamant the Spain international is not for sale, however. "It's not true. I'm sorry," he said. "He is not available at any price, for sure."

Victory at the DW Stadium will reduce the gap on leaders Manchester City to just four points with Roberto Mancini's side due to face Arsenal the following day.
And while Villas-Boas has no new injuries to contend with, he conceded Michael Essien, absent all season with a knee injury, is still a month away from full fitness and expects the Ghana international to miss the African Cup of Nations.
"We're looking at mid-January, that's the best we can think about. There was a setback at the beginning of December if I'm not wrong which took him back 10 days and that's extended into January, so I don't think he will go to the African Cup of Nations," the manager said.
Wigan have been lifted by the victory at West Bromwich Albion that moved them out of the bottom three and revived hopes they can escape relegation.
Like Villas-Boas, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has also been forced to deny reports his main striker could quit the club in January.
Hugo Rodallega is also out of contract next summer but Martinez said: "Hugo Rodallega is a professional and has been a very important member of this football club. He still is.
"He has had a stop-start season and we were fortunate his injury at Everton was not as bad as we feared.
"Now it is a matter of getting back to his best. There is no hidden agenda or anything complicated."

Battling Celtic crashed out of the Europa League despite coming close to pulling off an unlikely Italian job.

And the evening ended in anger for boss Neil Lennon who insisted his team were denied a spot-kick in the closing minutes when a Udinese defender appeared to handle in the penalty area.

Chasing their first victory on Italian soil, Lennon’s side needed a win to advance to the last 32 of the competition.

And Gary Hooper’s close-range finish in 29 minutes gave the Scottish Cup holders hope of pulling off a shock.

The one that got away: Lennon pleads in vain with the linesman for a Celtic penalty

Another Cha Du-ri error on foreign soil unhinged the Parkhead side’s chances, however, when a loose defensive header teed up a leveller for dangerman Antonio di Natale in first-half injury time.

Also the fall guy in Rennes, where he scored an own goal, the South Korean’s error proved costly on a night when goalkeeper Fraser Forster pulled off a string of superb second-half saves to tee up a grandstand finish.

Although TV footage of the incident was inconclusive, Lennon was convinced that Greek referee Michail Koukoulakis missed a handball by Brazilian Danilo in the dying stages which would have handed Celtic a dramatic shot at glory.

The Northern Irishman said: ‘I was very proud of the team. Everyone made a fantastic contribution and with a bit of luck we would be through. But I thought there was a clear handball. I thought it hit one of their centre-backs on the arm, I think it was Danilo.

Level terms: Di Natale ended Celtic's European dream

‘It was a great effort all round. We hit the post, we had one cleared off the line.

‘In terms of chances, it was almost as good as we’ve played. To come away from home, to Italy of all places, and play like that was really good to see.’

Forster was key to keeping Celtic’s hopes alive with several fine stops and Lennon likened the on-loan Newcastle United man to a former Hoops favourite.

‘We had Artur Boruc a couple of years ago and, in Forster, I think we’ve found another one like that,’ he said. ‘There were some top-class saves. You need a keeper like that.’

Class act: Forster was excpetional in Italy

Cha had a dramatic evening, almost becoming the hero after his defensive blunder for di Natale’s goal, when he hit the post with a late shot that Samir Handanovic allowed to then escape his grasp and almost trundle over the line.

The full-back had earlier been caught up in a case of mistaken identity when he was booked for a foul which was committed by Scott Brown. When Cha was later yellow-carded again, the Celtic bench held their collective breath but referee Koukoulakis appeared to have rectified his mistake with his assistants and the Hoops star stayed on the park.

Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin was in no mood to discuss Lennon's penalty theory. He said: 'Neil Lennon said the difference was the penalty awarded in Glasgow and the penalty that wasn't awarded tonight.

'Well, in 25 years I have never talked about single incidents and that won't change now. I think what was important tonight was that we scored just before the end of the first half.

'I was not surprised by the way Celtic played, I was expecting to see that performance from them.

'Celtic are a very strong team, very aggressive and filled with spirit.'
Everton manager David Moyes has revealed he is hoping to bring in more new players after confirming the loan signing of Landon Donovan and a new contract for Ross Barkley.

It was announced on Thursday that USA skipper Donovan will return to Goodison Park in January for a second loan deal after a successful two-and-a-half-month spell in early 2010.

Then on Friday the club confirmed that talented youngster Ross Barkley had put pen-to-paper on a new four-and-a-half-year contract.

The news was of welcome relief to Everton fans after watching their side sell first-team players Jermaine Beckford, Yakubu and Mikel Arteta over the summer without signing any replacements.

The Toffees have subsequently struggled in the league, losing eight of their first 14 games to slide to within four points of the relegation zone.

Moyes admitted the news has put a spring in everyone's step at the club and hinted that he hopes to strengthen the squad further in the upcoming January transfer window.

"I've always said making progress at a club is really important," said the Scot. "I think today we have made a bit of progress in signing a young boy like Ross Barkley, making sure he is our player, and bringing in Landon, who did well for us in his last spell.

"We are working hard to bring in more (players) just now.

    Promises

"There are never any promises but if Landon is the start we are hoping to do one or two more.

"Hopefully it filters through to the supporters and they are much happier and have something to talk about and look forward to."

Despite their well-publicised financial woes Everton have a reputation for producing talented young players.

Midfielder Barkley is the latest graduate of a Toffees Academy that has produced the likes of Wayne Rooney, Leon Osman and Jack Rodwell in recent years.

Moyes feels that despite the return of Donovan producing a great deal of excitement among the supporters, it is the new deal for Barkley that is of greater long-term benefit to the club.

"That is probably the most important because he [Ross] is one of our own," added Moyes.

"We are delighted Ross has signed and we will try to bring him on the way we have done with many others.

    Develop

"The best news is always when you develop your own and bring them through and that is what Everton do.

"We all know he has a bright future ahead of him but he is going to need a bit of time to develop.

"But so did all the others; the Waynes (Rooney) and Jacks (Rodwell) of this world - even Leon Osman. We have to give him that opportunity to come along.

"No one could take him off us and we have a really good record of, when we get these boys, pointing them in the right direction and turning them into really good players.

"I didn't think there was any time when someone was coming to take him off me, we just couldn't sign him to a contract until he was 18."
