Savannah Celtic F.C. is thrilled to announce that Spencer Davis will take over as the new club president. Spencer has been heavily involved with the club since joining last fall and we feel he is the perfect choice to take the club forward as the Celtic Nation continues to expand within the local soccer community. Spencer takes over from Tina Barefield who served in the role for over a year in a time which saw Celtic become the largest local recreational soccer club. Tina has helped Savannah Celtic F.C. grow into the club it is today and we are so thankful for her contributions. Read about Spencer s Bio here.

The 4th Annual Celtic Pride youth soccer tournament took place November 13/14th here in Savannah and was a resounding success for all those who took part. The event was our biggest challenge yet, taking place across 5 of Savannah's premier sports facilities. We would like to thank St Andrews School, the City of Savannah and Chatham County for their help in ensuring the event ran smoothly. Celtic Pride was also a success for a few Celtic teams who participated in it.

The North American Soccer League released a press statement this morning stating they have submitted to the USSF their final bid for sanctioning of Division II.

The eight teams included in the league will be the, Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, FC Tampa Bay, Montreal Impact, Miami FC Blues, NSC Minnesota Stars and the Puerto Rico Islanders. No details were given on the inclusion of the Atlanta Silverbacks or NSC Minnesota Stars.

“This is an exciting time for the NASL as it nears the finish line in its two year quest for second division sanctioning from the USSF.  We were encouraged by fans to return second division soccer to Atlanta after a two season hiatus and are thrilled that over twenty years of continuous professional play in Minnesota will continue in 2011 and beyond,” said Aaron Davidson CEO of the NASL.

The Silverbacks, owned by Boris Jerkunica, withdrew from USL-1 (Division II) at the end of the 2008 season. They were signed on as one of the original NASL teams but were believed to no longer be interested in fielding a team in 2011.

The NSC Stars had recently made pleas for a new owner or investor citing higher than expected costs to run the team. The National Sports Center is a non-profit organization.

North American Soccer League Concludes Successful AGM and Finalizes USSF Application

Teams in Minnesota and Atlanta Added for 2011 Season

November 10, 2010 — The North American Soccer League (“NASL”) recently concluded its 2010 Annual General Meeting held in Miami, Florida on November 7th and 8th. The meeting was highlighted by the approval of two additional teams for the 2011 season – the NSC Minnesota Stars and the Atlanta Silverbacks – and their inclusion in the application to the United States Soccer Federation for sanctioning as a Division II league. The completed application, which was originally submitted with six teams on September 28, 2010, was submitted to the Federation immediately following the conclusion of the meeting.

The application also includes San Antonio (which will commence play in 2012) and an additional team to be announced (which will commence play in 2013). The NASL is looking forward to favorable consideration of the application by the Board of Directors of the USSF at its meeting on November 21 in Toronto, Canada.

“This is an exciting time for the NASL as it nears the finish line in its two year quest for second division sanctioning from the USSF. We were encouraged by fans to return second division soccer to Atlanta after a two season hiatus and are thrilled that over twenty years of continuous professional play in Minnesota will continue in 2011 and beyond ” said Aaron Davidson CEO of the NASL.

Club owners and general managers will continue working on developing the schedule for the 2011 season over the coming weeks. The NASL plans to release the opening weekend schedule of games later this month.

The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team travels to Greensboro, N.C., this weekend as it takes on UNC Greensboro in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The first round of the tournament pits Georgia Southern (8th seed, 3-10-3, 0-6-1) up against the top-seeded UNCG Spartans (9-5-4, 4-1-2) Saturday, November 6th, at 7 p.m.

"I think there is something unique about tournament games and especially Southern Conference games," Kennedy said about the tournament. "It's going to be a good experience in what is really a great environment at UNCG."

The winner of the UNCG-Georgia Southern match up will play the winner of Appalachian State-Elon contest in the Southern Conference Semifinals at Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on Friday November, 12th, at 5 p.m.

Saturday's first-round match up will be the 21st meeting between the Eagles and Spartans' in the series history. UNCG got the best of Georgia Southern in their first and only meeting of the 2010 season when the Spartans' left Statesboro on October 10th with the conference win.

UNCG spread the field as six different Spartans found the back of the net. Georgia Southern freshman midfielder Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) scored for the Eagles off an Aleksander Tomic (Sydney, Australia) pass in the 69th minute of play.

The Spartans finished 2010 league play with 14 points and claimed a share of the regular season title with Furman and College of Charleston. UNCG captured the title for the sixth time in 14 SoCon seasons.

"It will come down to execution, and finding out if can we execute in that environment," said Eagle Head Coach, Kevin Kennedy. "It's a wonderful opportunity for our players."

With seniors Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Austin Steele (Kennesaw, Ga.) out of action for the first round, the Eagles will look for an offensive attack from some of their younger players. Norton, one of two players to start in all 16 games this season, is second on the team in points, tallying two goals and three assists on just 25 shots.

Freshman forward Ethan LaPan (Martinez, Ga.) is second on the team in shot percentage, scoring three goals on 13 shots in 2010. Defensively, Georgia Southern will start freshman goalkeeper Neal Bates (Watkinsville, Ga.) who will face the Spartans for the first time in his career.

Over 2,900 kids to take field in Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup

FRISCO, Texas (November 1, 2010) – Atlanta, Ga. will host the Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup, the largest recreational youth soccer tournament in the United States, at McCurry Park North, McCurry Park South, Lovejoy Soccer Complex and Tyus/Cowan Park November 13-14, 2010. The Under-10 through Under-19 boys and girls participating in the Kohl's US Youth Soccer American Cup will bring together 180 teams on numerous soccer fields for the annual soccer tournament held in Atlanta, Ga.

Kohl's American Cup offers youth soccer players an opportunity to play in a high-quality tournament in a fun, family-like atmosphere.  The program was started in 2000 as an avenue to highlight recreational soccer players and promote fair play.  Players receive equal opportunities and benefits within their level of play, with an emphasis on participation, rather than competition.

The Kohl's American Soccer Experience Vehicle will add even more excitement to the Atlanta Kohl's American Cup. The Soccer Experience Vehicle comes complete with three larger-than-life inflatable soccer games and numerous prizes and souvenirs for participants and their families. In 2009, Soccer Experience Vehicles 1 and 2 covered over 23,000 miles.

This event is one of over 65 Kohl's American Cup tournaments being held from March to December.  All tournaments are open to players registered with a US Youth Soccer State Association recreational league.

Admission to Kohl's American Cup is free.
