There is something unique when it comes to the North American Soccer League. It has something that is entirely different than most Major League Soccer clubs and not easily replicable. That uniqueness is its’ intimacy. After an NASL game at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta, one can walk out onto the field to play a quick game. They can mingle with the players who just finished a game of their own. They can speak with club owners and general managers easily as well.

The North American Soccer League has tried their hardest to encourage this intimacy, because it builds a different kind of fanbase. It builds a rabid fanbase. One that loves its’ club so much, that it will do just about anything to ensure its’ survival. When word came that the Atlanta Silverbacks Football Club might indeed fold, one group initiated an endless campaign to save it. While the Jasun Cohen of the ASAC was relatively new, his devotion to the club had built so strongly and swiftly that he was asked to be President of a group that would go on to save soccer in the Atlanta area.

I met Cohen at an Irish bar in Marietta, Georgia. The first thing I saw upon entering the bar was a man in a Silverbacks jersey and scarf. He noticed me as soon as I walked in the door and gave me a hearty welcome, too. This was nice, considering I was running pretty late for the interview. This particular bar was perfect, considering the topic. Scarves and jerseys from European clubs were hung everywhere.

As I was interviewing the President of the ASAC, I should not have expected anything less. Cohen’s life revolves around soccer. He coaches. His son plays. They attend Silverbacks games every time they are at home. They even have clubs with former Silverback players that they’ll travel to see as well. For someone who lives almost an hour from the park itself, that impressed me. Cohen has, over time, met and befriended several Silverbacks players on a level that not many people do.

“We had Thanksgiving dinner with Alex Harlley.”

Cohen loves the team on a personal level. To find out that they could possibly be torn from him was devastating. It is one thing for a casual fan to lose a team. For someone who personally knows and talks to many players on the team, it is a lot harder.

“Personally, I was terrified. Because, I love going to the games and I love the atmosphere. And, through getting to know the players, I love them. So, I knew we had to do whatever it took to get the team to come back,” Cohen tells me. “Just short of cutting a check for it, because...yeah...I don’t have a 20 million dollar net worth.”

While the bit about a 20 million dollar net worth was intended as a joke, I have no doubt that Cohen would have paid it immediately if he had the money. Early on in the conversation, I started to realize why Cohen was asked to be President.

I had first found the Silverbacks Alliance through Twitter and Facebook. Apparently, it had been in place long before, though. It just was not quite as organized. The groups’ original intention was entirely different than their most recent purpose, however.

“The purpose of the ASAC is to bring all four {supporter} groups together, as well as family fans. So, we can streamline a request from, like a, supporter or a family.”

While the intent of improving the gameday experience was definitely needed, the group was forced to shift their focus and become more vocal in order to ensure they had a team to improve.

“We were working on things to talk to the club about. Different ways to make the whole thing better. But, we were concentrating, back then, on things like concessions, parking prices, things like that...interaction between the announcer and the crowd,” Cohen explains. “But, the Silverbacks made the announcement and everything changed. So, we had to focus on saving the team first. That way, any ideas we had for making the club better could actually be put in place.”

Upon hearing the news, the group knew they had to do something. They would not sit around and let their club leave so easily.

“We actually had a discussion amongst ourselves on different ways we could affect and save the Silverbacks. Because, none of us are in the position to cut a check. But, we can help find someone who is in a position to cut a check.”

The Silverbacks Alliance's chosen tactic was to be as loud as possible in their cries for a new owner. They wanted to let the Atlanta area know that there was a solid fanbase. It just needed a solid ownership. Their pleas helped.

“As it worked out, it was our making noise about saving the Silverbacks. That was the deciding factor between Bill Peterson and the NASL to save the Silverbacks.”

By becoming the ASAC President, Cohen has had the opportunity to talk to NASL Commissioner several times as well.

“If it wasn’t for Bill Peterson, the NASL and the other team owners stepping up because they believe in the Atlanta market and they saw what the fans could do, they would’ve let the team fold.”

Not that the group has been able to successfully save their favorite team, the Alliance as once again changed priorities.

“Since the club is saved, we’re going back to our last mission. Which is, to make a game day experience better, giving options to the front office as to how they can streamline things and make them better, and just try to make the club stronger all around.”

While the Silverbacks are indeed coming back, that does not mean there still is not major issues to contend with. Historically, the team has had a severe lack of marketing in the Atlanta area. With a Major League Soccer franchise coming in 2017, the Silverbacks need to rectify that immediately. Some of the issues the club will face are not so easy to fix, including one of the highest ticket prices in the NASL.

“You have to look at it as the business model is set up. The Silverbacks get no money from parking. They get no money from concessions. For the 2015 season, they are going to have to rent the field and rent their name,” Cohen says. “So, the only money they really make is from ticket sales. So, those sales have to go to fund the team, fund the travel, pay the players, pay the insurance, front office and all that.”

While sponsors help to alleviate some of that cost as well, the club also has not had an easy time accruing those either. The jersey sponsor from last year was a company that belonged to one of the owners at the time.

Cohen acknowledges these issues. He also says that the Silverbacks Alliance will do anything in their power to help.

“I’ve just set up to have weekly meetings with {Vice President} Evan Mitz. We’re going to talk about ways to, starting from right now, to make the club stronger and better for when they start up.”

His main idea for the Silverbacks is a simplistic one. He wants people to just come see the team.

“Tell your friends. Bring your friends. You don’t have to come every week. Come every other week. Come once a month.”

My interview with Cohen lasted a lot longer than I had anticipated. We sat and talked of all things soccer related for several hours. Eventually, we knew we had to leave. As I packed up my things and headed out the door, I noticed Cohen was not leaving quite yet. Instead, he stopped to speak to the only employee. As I drove away, I gave a quick glance at Cohen finally walking out the doors.

Within that quick glance, I noticed something missing. Cohen was no longer wearing his Silverbacks scarf. Instead, he left it to be hung up where it should be. Alongside scarves belonging to some of the best clubs in the world.

ATHENS, Ga. --- Former Duke University associate head coach Billy Lesesne has been named the fifth head coach of the Georgia soccer team, it was announced Tuesday by J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity.

“We are proud and excited to announce Billy as our next head coach,” McGarity said. “He will bring plenty of experience from a successful Duke University program, and we are looking forward to him leading us in the future. We are thrilled to welcome Billy and his family to Athens and to the University of Georgia.”

Lesesne comes to UGA following 14 seasons in Durham, the last 11 as the program’s associate head coach. He helped lead the 2011 edition of the Blue Devils to the NCAA College Cup (“Final Four”) and was named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year that season. In his 14 seasons at Duke University, the Blue Devils reached a total of 12 NCAA Tournaments, including three straight trips to the “Elite Eight” from 2011-13.

He previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach before his promotion in the summer of 2004. In addition to his coaching duties at Duke University, Lesesne was a North Carolina ODP state coach and Region III staff coach in 2002-03.

Prior to his time in Durham, Lesesne served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for two seasons, guiding the Commodores to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament in 2000.

Lesesne’s previous head coaching experience came at his alma mater, Erskine College, where he spent six seasons. There, he served as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs. He earned several honors during his time at Erskine, including NSCAA Division II Women’s South Region Coach of the Year and Carolina’s Virginia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1997, after leading the Lady Fleet to a 15-2-1 record and a conference title. He also won the Carolina’s Virginia Athletic Conference Messick Award for Sportsmanship in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as the conference award for highest graduation rates for student-athletes.

Lesesne began his coaching career at Cambridge Academy in Greenwood, S.C., in 1988, before serving as the assistant men’s coach at the College of Charleston from 1990-91. He also coached the South Carolina Boys’ State ODP team from 1990-95 and the Girls’ ODP team from 1996-99.

Lesesne enjoyed a successful playing career, playing three years of professional soccer with the Charleston Battery (USISL/A-League) and four years at Erskine College, where he was an NAIA All-America selection his senior season and an NSCAA All-South Region honoree his last two seasons. He also earned NAIA All-District 6 honors from 1983-86, and was the Jake Todd/Erskine College Senior Athlete Award winner for the 1986-87 school year. He graduated from Erskine in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in biology/natural science.

Lesesne currently resides in Durham with his wife, Katie, two daughters, Addison (10) and Victoria (9), and son, William (2 weeks).

The Atlanta Soccerfest in Brookhaven Park on June 22, 2014 drew 20,000 soccer fans to cheer on the USA against Portugal.

In addition to the World Cup being broadcast on humongous TV screens in the park, the group added a patriotic 5K and Fun Run as well as the first ever Soccer Arcade for kids.

Partnering with Keep Kickin’, all of the proceeds went to blood cancer research and patients.

The group raised $20,000 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta through the Care-A-Thon.

Yianni, "It is about time that you showed up" Imre said.  He was glad to see me one Tuesday morning, last September when I came to practice with you all. 

I had the luck to meet Imre and play with him for a couple of seasons, about 10 years ago. I have to say that it was a unique experience. He was one of the best soccer players that I ever played soccer with. And most importantly, he was a great person who was trying always to help his teamates, both physically and mentally. It was a pleasure knowing Imre and it was a great privilege to be able to play in the same team with him too.

I agree with  Phil. I think God needs Imre to show them up there how to pass and control the ball. Nice and easy as  he always did it with us down here.

We will miss a beautiful friend for sure!

I was lucky enough to spend time with Imre in the presence of his wonderful wife Sonja on a couple of occasions. One in particular in Florida at a tournament where we stayed up until the early hours in a condo just talking about life and telling jokes.  I can only imagine the Pataki family's pain today. My deepest condolences to them.  He believed that anyone could achieve anything they wanted to and while I will miss his presence, I will forever celebrate a life with great meaning, very well lived!! His voice still rings in my ears and the images of him in my brain after tournament practice just this past weekend. So fit and tuned to health when so many of the rest of us are much less so. Shlomo & Marilyn Kassis ---------------------------------------------- I am deeply saddened by the loss of Imre.  I have so many pleasant memories of playing soccer with him.  I really got to know and appreciate Imre at the early Rovers FC kick rounds on Robinson Road.  Imre was such a great mentor and I consider myself very lucky to have met him.  He provided so much positive and uplifting advice, wit, and wisdom and was truly inspirational for me and countless others.   Imre, you will be missed but not forgotten.  Sincere condolences, Mike Kinion and family -------------------------------------------- a day to reflect on a tragic death what a wonderful man imre was and his family whom he adored so fit and charismatic when you were in his company you just listened and the bullet points would flow in relation how to keep yourself fit and how to improve and win the game with the half time team talk I have heard the cause of death a ruptured aortic aneursym found easily on an ultrasound scan of abdomen eminently treatable and life goes on i am sure all the family and sons and daughters will know to get scanned after  the funeral takes place please everyone get a scan over the age of 50 to reassure themselves they do not have an aneursym i still cannot believe this has happened and it brings tears to my eyes keep me informed when the service takes place dr ian smith  family practitioner over the pond in cotswolds of england  ---------------------------------------------------- I am still in shock. This is Imre we are talking about, fit, positive, healthy, promised us to live at least to be 100, helping others telling them how to live better and become better and then he left us. --------------------------------------- When I met first met him, I was out of shape, angry, and generally horrible at soccer. When he would see me starting to lose my temper, he would jog over, give me encouragement and advice (even if he was on the other team), and go back to playing. MANY times I thought about throwing away my cleats before a well-timed Imre intervention set things right. Years later, he was reffing my over 30 men's league games...always asking how my dad was doing, saying he was proud of me for making a healthy turn in my life, and how much I've improved as a player. This meant the world to me. Imre taught "the gentile art of Akido" to kids when he wasn't refereeing games. He always told me how invested he was in ensuring that people had a healthy outlet,and that I should sign up for one of his classes. It was this past Sunday after donating his time refereeing for a Christmas charity soccer tournament that Imre passed away...his final moments spent in service. I thought about playing in this tournament...but I didn't. I didn't get a last chance to see my friend. So I'll have to remember the last time I saw him on the field, his arm around my shoulder much like a grandfather... "Nicholas, you played well today." Thanks Imre... I needed that. Nick Aliffi ---------------------------------------------- Truly one of the most unique human beings I have ever met and his love for the beautiful game and people in general was most evident in his quest for perfection of the skill and his gentle manner. God seems to take these special people from us early I guess with the hope that the impact of their special ways spreads.  As I read the tributes he has impacted us all so lets honor him by applying a little each day of what he taught us especially, kindness, patience, understanding, and teaching which are attributes we need much more in today's seemingly upside down world. Rich Leone --------------------------------------------------- Imre's passing is a shock (he was a great man),  a friend - but what's more its a reminder we are all on borrowed time.  I sometimes throw my feelings down in writing, and shared this with a close soccer friend, who suggested passing on to you. I don't know his family - but feel free to pass anonymously the poem below (its rough and I am  no poet) on your blog, to his family, whatever, if you think appropriate. He was a good soul. The Referplayer! The turf, the dreams, a pick up game, That works in all of a player's life Its the round that moves endlessly The start is the end and the beginning The game may rest but the adrenaline flows And the vigor and happiness from family and friends Its made more perfect the love To have played and thought of it as y'all To judge a spirit so enthusiastic and loose It was the job of giving back The purity of equity that my judgement be But there is a referee that called the ultimate game And his whistle was loader than me But in all things the right call is soul liberating And now the heart and spirit run free And in the game I now play All precious to those in mortal life Is to let you all know we are spectators here! And like an encouraging crowd It can pain eleviate And happiness elevate.
