Being part of the Fugees means more than playing soccer: it is a lifestyle—good grades, good behavior, and good friendships are all part of the game.

Last Thursday at noon, students filled the Student Center ballroom to hear the keynote speech of UVU’s “Outcasts Speak” week from Luma Mufleh, head coach and founder of The Fugees Family organization, which helps provide organized soccer, academic tutoring, and plenty of support to refugee youth from around the world who live in an area near Atlanta, Georgia.

UVU Freshmen should already be familiar with Mufleh. She and her team of young refugees are the subjects of this year’s Freshman Reading Program book: “Outcasts United” by Warren St. John.

Mufleh took the stage looking the part of a soccer coach: she sported a short haircut, jeans, a track jacket, and sneakers. She was smiling but admitted she was nervous. Getting a laugh from the audience, she said she was much better at giving half-time talks than public speeches. Mufleh then went on to tell the story of her life: from privileged childhood in Jordan to college and a new life in the US, from bankruptcy and no direction to soccer coach and non-profit entrepreneur.

Mufleh shared that two of the driving forces in her life are entrepreneurship and a sense of right and wrong. She uses these forces in her work with the Fugees and believes in challenging the youth she works with to succeed. According to Mufleh, “If you set the bar really high, they will live up to it.”

Many of Mufleh’s players have been rising to the bar she’s set. Several have gone on to college, becoming the first high school graduates and college students in their families. Some of these players have received athletic scholarships and others have received academic scholarships. In Mufleh’s philosophy education is key. She pushes her players to be “student athletes” and won’t let them play in the soccer games if they aren’t performing satisfactorily in academics.

Although the Fugees have achieved much, the path hasn’t been easy. Many of Mufleh’s players come from single-parent homes, lack enough food to eat, or struggle in school. Also, in the past sometimes the players didn’t have anywhere to practice soccer or didn’t have uniforms to wear. Once they had to buy t-shirts and make uniforms by drawing on the shirts with markers.

In spite of struggles, the Fugees Family has grown and hopes to start the first school for refugees in the US. The Fugees have also expanded to include girls in their programs.

Some of the lessons Mufleh has learned through her experiences are: that failure is a part of success and can teach you how to improve, that there are many simple and good things in life, and that a family can include more than just those who share your DNA.

Mufleh’s advice is: “Live every day with no regrets, stand up for what you believe in, and remember you only need one shoe.”

After not playing during the New York Red Bulls' 2-0 victory over FC Dallas, it is clear things haven’t gone to plan for Juan Agudelo.

Rewind a year. The 18-year-old inspired the imaginations of United States soccer fans across the country as he showed glimpses of his vast potential starring in New York’s early playoff exit and scoring in his national team debut against South Africa. This season, the forward has had a difficult time breaking into head coach Hans Backe’s starting lineup.

Red Bulls icon Juan Pablo Angel mentored Agudelo last year during Angel's final season with the club and believes that the forward is likely upset with his lack of playing time. However, Angel still believes the future is very bright for Agudelo.

“He’s a young kid and in the end of the day the sky is the limit,” Angel said to Goal.com. “I’m sure he’ll be very disappointed in the amount of playing time that he had this year.“

He added, “He’s one of the best prospects that this league has in the sport.”

Due to the fact that he no longer has an inside view with the Red Bulls, Angel wouldn’t speculate on why Backe hasn’t featured the starlet this season. However, the Chivas USA forward said that fans need to be patient with Agudelo’s development.

“He’s obviously an equity, not just for the Red Bulls but for the league,” Angel explained. “He’s one of the young talents that you want to do well and you want to make sure that he’s being taken care of in the right way.”

Angel believes that Agudelo has the perfect tutor in Thierry Henry, who has lead the line for two of the best clubs in the world in Barcelona and Arsenal.

”He has one of the best players of all time training next to him on a regular basis and I’m sure he’s learning from him,” Angel said. “Teaching him the right things for him to become a world class player.”

Having spent half a decade in MLS, Angel is happy to see the league starting to produce top quality talent. He remembers his first year in the league and says that it has developed substantially since his arrival in 2007.

“We all knew about [the challenges of MLS]. We know that we came here to help the sport grow. And it has grown dramatically in the last four or five years since I’ve been here,” said Angel. “The league has gotten more competitive and it has done a good job of growing the sport throughout the country.

“In the near future people are going to be talking more about the league, that’s for sure. “

Juan Pablo Angel spoke with Goal.com as part of Adidas’ miCoach campaign, a speed cell microchip that can go on any shoe with laces to accurately time running statistics. The miCoach will be available in stores in December.

COLORADO RAPIDS
  • For a second consecutive year, the Rapids and Crew will meet in Commerce City in the opening phase of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Rapids won the first leg of last year's Eastern Conference Semifinals, 1-0, before winning the series on penalty kicks after a Columbus 2-1 in the second leg.
  • "It's a one-off," defender Drew Moor said. "The winner moves on, loser goes home. Anything can happen in games like that. ... We need to take advantage of our home field."
  • With his seventh goal in the season finale, midfielder Jeff Larentowicz won the club's Golden Boot. "That's something I was not expecting, and I wish it weren't me," Larentowicz said. "But [Saturday] there was a free kick and it's a situation where you're trying to find a hole and it found it's way in."
  • Larentowicz won the honor after two seasons where strikers Conor Casey and Omar Cummings combined for more than 20 goals in each year. Casey scored six goals this year in 11 games before his season was cut short with a torn Achilles; Cummings had three goals in 18 starts.
  • “There’s no doubt the forwards have been going through a bit of a sticky patch and, when that happens, you have to find the goals from somewhere else,” Rapids head coach Gary Smith said. “Once again, Jeff scored a very important goal.”
  • In last year's run to the MLS Cup title, the Rapids scored five goals. Two came from Casey - but two came from Pablo Mastroeni and Kosuke Kimura (one each). The last was the Cup-winning own goal.
  • "You look at the playoffs last year and you look at the entire season this year, we've gotten goals from all over the field," said Moor, who scored a career high four goals, including two game-winning and two game-tying goals. "Even guys who haven't started a lot this year have game-winning goals. And that's key, especially in the playoffs."
  • The goal scored by Vancouver in the final league game was the first allowed by Colorado in 300 minutes over their final four games, and they enter the playoffs unbeaten in those four (2-0-2) after a three-game losing run.
  • "I think we've definitely found our form, which is key at this time of the season," Moor said. "But it's a much different ballgame once you go into the playoffs. We're going to have to stay on the same page, stay concentrated, continue to communicate and at times play desperate, but hopefully it doesn't come to that. We need to kill off plays early and provide as much support for our goal scorers as we can, and that is by keeping zeros and keeping shutouts."
COLUMBUS CREW
  • The Crew fell into the Wild Card game after dropping their season finale to Chicago, then seeing Houston dispatch the LA Galaxy to jump over Columbus and Philadelphia into second place in the Eastern Conference.
  • "It would have been nice to come back after being down two goals and win this. We were on the way to do that. Obviously we gave up one play and we end up losing the game. It is what it is. We have to regroup and play our best game in Colorado," said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha.
  • After removing Kevin Burns for Robbie Rogers after 39 minutes in Chicago, Warzycha said Danny O'Rourke "doesn’t have a choice" in starting in Colorado. O'Rourke was held after the New England, his fifth 90-minute outing in six contests after not starting the first 27 games because of knee surgery nearly a year ago.
  • "All year I’m trying to find the right combination,” Warzycha said. “We saw a little bit of what Danny and [Ekpo] could do when they played together at New England. That was the combination I was looking for all season but obviously we can’t have it now.”
  • When Rogers came on, Dilly Duka moved into the central midfield spot along with the suspended Emmanuel Ekpo, with Eddie Gaven holding down the other flank. “He was a link in the middle,” Warzycha said of Duka. “That was a good move by us to bring him inside and have more touches because in the first 30 minutes I don’t think he saw the ball enough.”
  • Duka started the last nine games of the season, while Rogers had not appeared in the two games before the Chicago match.
  • “It’s not going to be the same [as Chicago], but we’ve been interchanging our first 11 all year, especially in center mid," Duka said. "We’re still confident whoever we put in the middle we’re going to jell and be a tough team to break down.”
  • Of the Crew starters in last year's playoff match in Colorado, five are no longer with the club.
  • "I don’t know if this team yet is mature enough, or maybe naive on the mistakes we’ve made. So there’s improvement that we need to make but overall I think this season so far has been pretty successful. Anything can happen in the playoffs," said Rogers.

By Mike Collett

LONDON, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Manchester City’s incredible 6-1 win Over Manchester United, Chelsea hitting the self-destruct button and goals from Dutch, French, Costa Rican and Icelandic internationals over the weekend once again underlined the global appeal of the English Premier League.

Rarely does a round of matches go by without something extraordinary happening to captivate a global TV audience estimated to reach 1.46 billion fans a week.

AdChoices

Manchester United crushed Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford in August and few of the watching millions could have imagined that the champions would be humiliated by their neighbours on the same pitch just a few weeks later.

Neither would they have thought that title-challengers Chelsea, odds-on to win at promoted Queens Park Rangers, would have two players sent off in eight minutes and lose 1-0 to a penalty scored by Iceland’s Heidar Helguson.

Add in Newcastle United extending their unlikely unbeaten run with a win over Wigan Athletic, doubles from Dutchmen Rafael van der Vaart for Tottenham Hotspur and Robin van Persie for Arsenal, Everton’s two stoppage-time goals to seal a 3-1 win at Fulham and Norwich City’s outstanding 1-1 draw at Liverpool and it is easy to see why the Premier League is so absorbing.

A report issued last week by media consultants Sport+Markt said that 70 per cent of the world’s estimated 2.08 billion football fans now regularly watch Premier League matches, far in excess of either the Spanish or Italian League’s despite the appeal of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan or AC Milan.

The report adds that games in the “EPL” as it is marketed overseas, were watched in more than 643 million homes around the world last year, up 11 per cent from 580 million in 2009.

Massive growth in interest in China and the United States have had an impact and the Premier League is now the most watched in the world.

NO SURPRISE

That comes as no surprise to Robert Prosinecki, the former Croatia international who won the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991 and reached the 1998 World Cup semi-finals with Croatia.

He also had a brief stint with Portsmouth which gave him a deeper understanding of the English game. Now the coach of Red Star, he told Reuters why he believes the League has global appeal.

“England is the cradle of football and what makes the Premier League so special is not just the quality of its teams, but also the football culture, tradition and infrastructure. Of course, it has also helped that so many top players have gone to the Premier League, attracted by its quality as much as the wealth of its clubs.

“It is uniquely entertaining for fans worldwide and it’s therefore not surprising it’s so popular.

“I watched the Manchester derby on television and the atmosphere was truly spectacular,” he added.

Footballer Rohan Ricketts, currently with League of Ireland leaders Shamrock Rovers, played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and also had spells at Arsenal, Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Queens Park Rangers and Barnsley

He then embarked on a nomadic career playing in Canada, Hungary, Moldova and Germany before moving to Ireland.

“Much of it is to do with the money that goes into the production of the broadcasting,” Ricketts told Reuters, explaining that the networks ensure the product looks good on TV.

“When you couple that with an intense, high tempo, back-and- forth type of style of play it’s hard not to be drawn into it.

“It’s non-stop. I don’t think it’s the best football-wise, but for entertainment it wins hands down. To top it all off the fans are mental.”

VAST EXPERIENCE

Stephen Constantine is another Englishman with vast experience of working overseas after coaching the Nepal, India, Malawi and Sudan national teams and now mainly watches matches from Cyprus where he coaches top-division side Nea Salamis.

Constantine told Reuters that one of the key elements in the Premier League’s popularity was its unpredictability.

“One of the main factors in its appeal is that in England in any game at any time anything can happen, as we have seen with the recent results—and hundreds of previous examples.

“Every year the so-called bigger teams can get beaten in the Cup or League.

“The consistently high attendances and the atmosphere at all the games is also a factor and of course when you see some of the best players in the world plying their trade in the Premier League then why would you want to watch anything else?

“La Liga is good but there are only two teams ever going to win that and although in England United have been dominant it has been very, very close.”

His view was shared by Paul Barber, a former English FA executive and now chief executive officer of Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS.

“Even from 5,000 miles away, the Premier League loses nothing of its incredible drama and excitement,” he told Reuters.

“Yet again, this weekend’s events prove this League is anything but predictable and remains the competition that every league in the world, regardless of their sport, looks to as the leading product on every measure.”

However, Constantine, does issue a word of caution.

“The downside of all this is the national team have more pressure to do well in major competitions,” he said. “When they only have a pool of English players to choose from, that’s when they don’t seem to have enough.”
