Emory Men’s Soccer Adds Professional Keeper Ceus to Coaching Staff

Ceus comes to Emory with a plethora of experience at the professional ranks.  After an all-American career at the University of Albany, he was selected as the 37th overall pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.  He went on to appear in four matches for the Rapids, while also seeing time with the Charlotte Eagles and Narpes Kraft Fotbollsforening of the Second Division Finnish League, before joining the Silverbacks at the start of the 2015 season.  Ceus was recently named to the NASL's Team of the Week, following his first start with the Silverbacks.

He also has been a member of the Haitian Men's National Team since 2010, earning seven caps with the squad.

In addition to his playing experience, Ceus has served as the Director of Goalkeeping for PrimoSports and the Colorado Fusion, while also working as the Goalkeeper Coach for World Class FC, Maximus FC and Cornwall FC.

"We are very excited to have Steward join our coaching staff for the fall of 2015," said Travis.  "He brings a wealth of experience as an accomplished goalkeeper playing at the professional level and with the Haiti National Team.  A goalkeeper with this background will be instantly respected by our four returning goalkeepers.  Also, he has had experience coaching goalkeepers at various clubs in New York and for the Colorado Fusion.  I am confident he will challenge and develop each of our goalkeepers here at Emory."

Emory made its 15th NCAA Division III Championship appearance in 2014, finishing the year ranked 24th in Division III with a 13-4-2 overall record.  The Eagles will kick off their 2015 campaign on Tuesday, September 1st at Oglethorpe University.
We will be starting a new fall adult league this coming fall.
Games will be played at Pope High School and Hillgrove High School stadiums on field turf. No rainouts 20 games guaranteed (10 fall, 10 spring). 4 Scrimmages (2 fall, 2 spring). Three referees at every match.
League table, no playoffs.

Cost is 250.00 per player for 24 total playing dates! Online registration only. All players must register online.

There is only room for 8 teams in the league. Great opportunity for everyone who is sick of rainouts. Next spring and this fall are supposed to be rainy again!

To reserve a team spot I need a manager to email me their team name so I can add it to the online registration as a choice and then the manager must have at least 11 players register before the first scrimmage.

I know it is early but think about it. Spread the word to managers of good clubs. Forward this email to everyone! Bring in a bunch of teams you like to play with!

More former professional players take the field at the ATL Champions League
Steve Archibald and Paul Canoville will play to provide more opportunities to kids in need
April 27,2015

Steve Archibald and Paul Canoville will be playing in the 2015 ATL Champions League, presented by Profisee. They will be raising funds for Soccer in the Streets and its metro Atlanta programs that empower underserved youth.
"This year's ATL Champions League keeps getting bigger," said Soccer in the Streets co-chairman Joe Hall. "Adding respected players like Steve and Paul, along with MLS Atlanta's Carlos Bocanegra, will only help us in our goal to provide more programming to kids in need."

Ten teams will be competing on and off the field in this event. Atlanta's most passionate soccer fans will be representing their favorite clubs in the event. The tournament is coed and played with a 7v7 format.
Steve Archibald played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups for Scotland.  He won two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup with Tottenham before moving on to Barcelona. He helped Barca win its first La Liga title in 11 years in 1984.

"Steve Archibald is a true Tottenham legend," said Michael Constantinou, chairman of the Atlanta Spurs.  "He was a key member of the team during one of the most successful periods in our history and all of us at Atlanta Spurs are thrilled and excited to welcome him to Atlanta."

Paul Canoville had a promising career cut short by injuries, but is best known as the first black player to feature for Chelsea. He was part of the Chelsea squad that won the Second Division in 1984. His memoir, Black and Blue, has won a number of awards.

"We believe Paul Canoville has a lot to offer to Soccer in the Streets," said Brenda D'Arcy, club secretary of the Atlanta Blues. "From talking with teenagers and doing a skills clinic for the younger children, Paul will be able to share his amazing story of overcoming adversity with youth who will benefit from this kind of role model."

The Brookwood athletic program stuck to its roots, and its hiring trend, with its two new head soccer coaches.
Stephen George, a 2006 Brookwood grad, was announced Friday as the Broncos’ head boys soccer coach, while the school also announced 1991 Brookwood grad Chad Carithers as its head girls soccer coach. George, currently a Bronco assistant, replaces his previous boss, Danny Klinect, who will be the head boys soccer coach at Parkview next season. Carithers, the director of coaching at Georgia FC, steps in for Jeff Becker, who was hired as head girls soccer at North Gwinnett.
“I think it will be good (to work with George),” Carithers said. “Brookwood is always good about bringing former players back to teach and coach.”
The two coaches join a growing list of Brookwood grads who are now head coaches at their alma mater, a list that includes football coach Philip Jones, basketball coaches Daniel Bowles and Mark Isenhour and girls cross country coach Chris Carter.
“It’s something that I’ve kind of always wanted to do,” George said of coaching at Brookwood. “Obviously being a player at Brookwood, understanding the Brookwood tradition of success and all of that is important. It’s something special to me to be able to play here and come back and coach here.”
George was a two-time all-county selection as a high-school and also won a state championship with the 2004 team before playing college soccer at West Virginia and Georgia Southern. He has been an assistant to Klinect for four seasons, helping the Broncos to last year’s Class AAAAAA state title. George played his senior season at Brookwood for Klinect after playing his first three seasons for previous head coach Mike Coulter.
“I’m excited about it,” said George, who also coaches club soccer for Atlanta Fire United. “Just trying to continue being successful here, that’s the main thing. I’ve had good coaches before me. I hope I can continue to keep that tradition going.”
Carithers remains one of Brookwood’s most decorated soccer players, having played for the U.S. Under-23 National Team in 1994 and 1995 in addition to earning two caps with the full U.S. National Team in 1994. The two-time all-state player while at Brookwood was the second-leading scorer in the nation as a College of Charleston senior in 1994 and also played pro soccer in Japan, for the South Carolina Shamrocks, for the Charleston Battery and for the Raleigh Express from 1995 to 2000.
He has coached at Georgia FC since moving back to Georgia late in 2000, but only recently moved into education after 10 years in the corporate world. He has been a special education paraprofessional at Brookwood the past two school years, but will join the special education department full time in 2015-16.
“I’m looking forward to the school spirit, the camaraderie around one central goal, your school,” Carithers said. “Club is that way a little bit but it’s more about my team, not really the whole club as a group. You’re still trying to make a name for your club, but trying to make a name for your school is more personal. That’s what I’ll enjoy, what I look forward to about going to the school. Hopefully I can try to make the school better and help the team keep succeeding and moving forward.”

Howdy Friends,

I am currently drowning in my senior research project up here at Queens and was wondering if y’all might be able to help disperse my survey. The question I am trying to answer is whether or not participating in soccer promotes acculturation amongst immigrants to the US. I’m trying to send it off to literally anyone who plays soccer, and preferably is from another country. Thus far, 12 people have responded and I need over 100 so every little bit would help! Let me know if you want me to type up an email for the masses, but either way here is the link to the survey - it only takes about 7min!

Soccer Player Attacked on Atlanta-Bound Flight

Passengers said the attacker believed the soccer team was out to kill him.Soccer Player Attacked on Atlanta-Bound Flight

A soccer player for a Canadian team had a rude awakening on a Jazz flight from Toronto to Atlanta over the weekend.
Oliver Minatel, a member of the Ottawa Fury Football Club, was en route to Atlanta with the rest of his team to play the Atlanta Silverbacks when another passenger tried to strangle him with headphone cords. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, fellow passengers said that the man who tried to strangle Minatel repeatedly said the team was trying to kill him.
According to CNN, the attacker was not restrained after the attack, but was forced to remain in his seat during the remaining 30 minutes of the flight and was shouted at by observing passengers any time he tried to get up. Once the plane landed at the airport, police took the attacker off the plane. The FBI told CNN that they were involved, but federal charges won’t be filed until the investigation wraps up.
“The safety of our passengers and crew are our top priority and our crew members are well trained to handle challenging situations,” said Jazz spokeswoman Teri Udle in a statement. “ We have a zero tolerance policy with respect to unruly behaviour.”
Atlanta's Soccer Community Comes Together for the Kids of Soccer in the Streets
MLS Atlanta to field a team led by President Darren Eales and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra

The ATL Champions League returns to Atlanta's Grady Stadium on Sunday, May 17th.  Ten teams come together to play a tournament for a cause, raising money to provide soccer opportunities for the kids ofSoccer in the Streets.  This year's event is sponsored byProfisee.

MLS Atlanta will join the tournament for the first time led by club president Darren Eales and former US national team captain and newly appointed Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra.
"MLS Atlanta is proud to join Soccer in the Streets for this year's ATL Champions League Tournament," said MLS Atlanta president Darren Eales. "One of our primary goals as an organization is to use soccer as a tool to improve lives in the Atlanta region for many years to come. We look forward to competing on the pitch in May and continuing to support the great work Soccer in the Streets is doing in our community."

Nine other teams will be competing with MLS Atlanta on and off the field. Atlanta's most passionate soccer fans will be representing some of Europe's top clubs in the event. The tournament is coed and played with a 7v7 format.
Last year's ATL Champions League event raised over $50,000 for metro Atlanta Soccer in the Streets programming.  In the past year, Soccer in the Streets has launched new programming in Atlanta's west side communities and in the Old 4th Ward's Boulevard corridor.  These neighborhoods have some of the highest concentrations of disconnected youth in Atlanta (16-24 year olds who are neither working or in school), an issue Soccer in the Streets programming is designed to address through empowering underserved youth through soccer, character development, mentoring, and employability programs.

"This event has become a highlight of the year for many of the participants," said Soccer in the Streets Chief Executive Officer Jill Robbins. "They look forward to playing a sport they love while raising money and providing opportunities to kids who need them."
