SILVERBACKS HOSTING YOUTH CLINICS ALL OVER ATLANTA

youth clinics
One of the common assumptions people have about professional athletes is that they go to practice in the morning, play on the field, and then go home and relax for the rest of the day. While this may be the case with players in many professional sports organizations, it’s not the case with Georgia’s only professional soccer team, Atlanta Silverbacks FC.
The Silverbacks have always made a commitment to giving back to the local soccer community, but the organization has really ramped up its involvement over the course of the last several seasons. Silverbacks players regularly spend their time away from the field hosting clinics, coaching, and making appearances at schools, camps, festivals, and other community events.
Perhaps the biggest hit in the community so far this season is the series of skills clinics that the Silverbacks have been hosting at local area youth soccer clubs. The Silverbacks haven’t just been sending their professional players to sign autographs and cheer the kids on – the players have been coaching Atlanta’s youth and helping them improve their skills.
Since April, the Silverbacks have brought 4-8 players on site to run soccer clinics at the following clubs/organizations: Chiefs Fútbol Club, Dacula Soccer Club Revolution, Smyrna Soccer Club, Barrow Youth Soccer Association, Roswell Soccer Club, Georgia Rush, Triumph Youth Soccer Association, Decatur-Dekalb YMCA, Rockdale Youth Soccer Association, Clayton County Parks and Recreation, and Boy Scouts of America.
The Silverbacks also held a full-speed team training session on site at Dacula Soccer Club earlier this season, practicing in front of hundreds of youth soccer players and their parents so that they can get a sense of the drills and training methods that a professional team employs to get prepared for its opponents.
On top of giving hands-on instruction to Metro Atlanta’s next crop of soccer stars, the Silverbacks players always stick around to sign autographs and take pictures with those attending the clinics. The club has three more clinics planned for the coming weeks. The Silverbacks will welcome athletes from Special Olympics Georgia to Atlanta Silverbacks Park on Friday. Clinics have also been scheduled for Buckhead FC and East Cobb YMCA.
With the NASL Fall Season underway, the Silverbacks will be scheduling several more soccer clinics and community appearances so that their players can continue to have a positive influence on those who are involved in the city’s youth soccer programs.
To find out more information about the club’s youth soccer clinics and community appearances, please contact Silverbacks Youth Soccer Manager Malcolm Johnson at (678) 500-9783 or malcolm.johnson@atlantasilverbacks.com.

Taking A Pulse On Soccer In Atlanta

Terminus Legion in good form, with 3 years remaining until ATL MLS
With three years remaining until ATL MLS, Terminus Legion is in great form.
When I began writing for Sporting ATL, the last place I envisioned this endeavor taking me was to an Atlanta Silverbacks soccer match on a Wednesday night.  In fact, the entire Sporting ATL staff made the trek to Norcross to see the home team take on MLS’s Chicago Fire.  The occasion was the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
According to ussoccer.com:
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-year-old single-elimination tournament.
The Silverbacks had been playing a Cinderella of sorts, as they had already knocked off two consecutive MLS teams in advance of the quarterfinals match against the Fire.  They were one of only two NASL teams remaining in the Cup, with the remaining six teams coming from the top level of competition, MLS.  Follow me after the jump as I recap our night at Silverbacks Park.
We purchased our tickets through Terminus Legion, which included a Silverbacks Battalion shirt and a general admission ticket to the 5,000 seat bandbox which the Silverbacks call home. I’m a dude who values first impressions, and my first impression of Terminus Legion was comparable to when I saw Jason Heyward’s first Major League at-bat.  Why? Because price of admission not only included a ticket and cheap T-shirt, but also free keg beer, hot dogs, and a live feed of the World Cup semifinal match. I’ve been to my fair share of tailgates over the years, but I can’t remember one where a group of strangers welcomed me with open arms, willingly offering me free beer and food.  It reminded me of being a college freshman going through fraternity rush all over again.  But dammit, if I am going to drive OTP to watch a Minor League Soccer team, you better do something to “rush” me.
The Legion marches into battle c/o Atlanta Silverbacks
The Legion marches into battle. c/o Atlanta Silverbacks
The evening continued with the Legion’s march into the stadium, highlighted by the banging of drums, ringing of cow bells, and waving of flags. The impassioned atmosphere was similar to that of a Friday night high school football game.  Once inside, my first impression grew favorably stronger with three-dollar draft beers. This wasn’t your average $3 Keystone, either—we’re talking $3 Terrapins and other fine crafts. Finally, kickoff came.
Let’s get one thing straight—the level of play was far from what we’ve witnessed in World Cup matches.  This brand of soccer was closer to The Big Green than The Beautiful Game, but the level of excitement in the stadium was incredible.  The stadium was over capacity with 5,300+ fans in attendance, and most were in their seats by kickoff—an absolute rarity in Atlanta sports culture.  It was obvious that fans really cared.
Both sides were scoreless when a fight broke out between reigning MLS MVP Mike Magee and Atlanta’s Jesus Gonzalez.  Double red cards were issued, and the game continued with only 20 men on the field.  After 45 minutes, we went into halftime with a scoreless barn burner, though the Silverbacks had controlled possession and seemed to have the upper hand.  The Fire struck first at the  50 minute mark, and Atlanta’s Deon McCaulay provided an equalizer four minutes later.  At this point, I was fully immersed into the action.  The Sporting ATL staff was handing out high-fives, rejoicing, and intensely pumped about the game.  This wasn’t the NFC Championship or Eastern Conference Finals, but it felt like it.
Atlanta Ultras, an Atlanta Silverbacks fan crew celebrating the goal
The Atlanta Ultras celebrated the equalizing goal with great fervor.
A late PK and a garbage time goal would ultimately lead to a 3-1 loss for the good guys, but it didn’t matter on this night.  We were here to witness the beginnings of an Atlanta grassroots sports movement, one that looks to be alive and well.  Wednesday night had me salivating for 2017.  The camaraderie amongst fans was something unique. The game wasn’t broadcast on national TV, but to those in attendance, there was nothing more important then supporting Atlanta soccer.  The pulse is strong, fellow Atlantans.
S/O to Terminus Legion for hosting the tailgate.  You are pressing all the right buttons to further grow Atlanta fan support, and to that, I tip my cap.

MLS: U.S. Open Cup-Chicago Fire at Atlanta Silverbacks
Silverbacks defender Ramiro Canovas and Fire forward Orr Barouch go up for a header in the second half. (Daniel Shirey / USA Today Sports / July 10, 2014)
ATLANTA -- The Chicago Fire welcomed back two players who missed the previous game, and each scored a goal Wednesday in a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match.
The Fire got goals from forward Quincy Amarikwa, who served a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation, and midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, who missed a game due to the birth of his child, to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
The Fire play in Major League Soccer, the top tier of U.S. professional soccer, while Atlanta is a member of the second-tier North American Soccer League.
The Fire went ahead to stay in the 82nd minute when Larentowicz scored on a penalty kick. Larentowicz rolled the ball straight and goalkeeper Derby Carrillo guessed right for the easy score.
The Fire broke through for its first goal in the 49th minute. Amarikwa scored on a crossing pass following a free kick to give the Fire a 1-0 lead.
Atlanta drew even in the 54th minute on a breakaway. Midfielder Junior Sandoval took a pass down the left side and found Deon McCaulay as the forward broke through on the opposite side. McCaulay beat goalkeeper Sean Johnson into the right side of the net for the equalizer, his second career Open Cup goal.
After Larentowicz put the Fire on top, midfielder Alex added an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
Atlanta was the aggressor early in the game. Johnson made a nice save on a shot from point-blank range from Sandoval, then steered another shot from Sandoval wide a minute later.
The Fire pressed the attack 10 minutes into the game. Amarikwa beat two Atlanta defensemen on the dribble but could not get a shot past Carrillo.
Atlanta went back on the attack. Johnson saved a shot from the left side by midfielder Junior Burgos and tipped another shot by Burgos over the net. Johnson then plucked a corner kick from Burgos out of the air in the middle of the goal mouth.
Things got a little physical in the 31st minute. Fire forward Mike Magee kicked Atlanta midfielder Jesus Gonzalez, then both engaged in a simultaneous head butt that resulted in the ejection of each player. Three minutes later, Fire defender Matt Watson was shown a yellow card for kicking an opponent.
The Fire had a chance late in the half when midfielder Jeff Larentowicz flashed in front following a direct kick and headed a shot that was speared by Carrillo. Neither team had another legitimate opportunity as the half ended 0-0.
NOTES: The Silverbacks were playing without midfielder Borfor Carr and forwards Kwadwo Poku and Jaime Chavez, who were suspended following dismissals for a brawl in the team's last game against the Colorado Rapids. Also suspended were Atlanta assistant coach Ricardo Montoya and technical director Eric Wynalda (a former Chicago player). ... Two members of the Fire team celebrated homecomings. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson grew up in Lilburn and assistant coach Clint Mathis grew up in Conyers, both suburbs of Atlanta. ... The Fire began the night having played only two previous games on turf, both 1-1 draws.
