Powerade Kicks Off Youth Soccer Partnership with Georgia Soccer

POWERADE®, the Official Sports Drink of the FIFA World Cup, is teaming with Publix to nurture the next generation of soccer stars by supporting state soccer associations throughout the southeast. Georgia Soccer is one of 5 state beneficiaries of a program designed to encourage youngsters to pursue their soccer aspirations.

The youth soccer association partnerships fit perfectly with POWERADE’s mission to help athletes’ power through to success. One of the brand’s strongest beliefs is that, through hard work and determination, athletes can overcome obstacles and achieve new heights. A similar spirit is celebrated and instilled by these youth soccer organizations.

During the promotional period of August 11th – 31st in participating Publix stores, 25¢ from every multipack of POWERADE purchased at Publix stores will be donated back to the five State Soccer Associations. Packs included in the promotion are the 8 pack 20 fl oz and 6 pack 12 fl oz for all flavors.

“Fluid replacement is critical for all youth players after practice or matches regardless of age and ability, especially in our climate. Electrolyte replacement as well as water is always critical to performance and recovery,” says Georgai Soccer partner Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta's Harold King, Manager of Sports Medicine and Certified Athletic Trainer. Powerade with Ion4 is the only sport drink that will replenish athletes with all 4 essential electrolytes that are lost in sweat.

So, plan ahead and head to Publix for special POWERADE BOGO offers and multi-pack sales during August 11th-31st and be ready for your families’ turn to bring post-game snacks and practice refreshments for your team. Stock up at a great price and support your Georgia Soccer at the same time!

Georgia Soccer Lowers Adult Fees

At the June Georgia Soccer Board of Directors meeting, the representative members voted to lower fees by $9.50 per player for all adult players/members of Georgia Soccer. Further, Georgia Soccer executive director Rick Skirvin has negotiated with the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) to pass on a $1 reduction in national fees for all new clubs joining through Georgia Soccer.

“Working closely with the executive director, our adult board reps really took the lead in advocating a new model for the growth of our adult program,” said Rick Skirvin. “This issue has been under discussion for the last two adult council general meetings and it was their leadership that got us to this point.”

This action is unprecedented in that the adult fees were last reduced in 2009 and held ever since at $24 per player. Fees have decreased close to 40 % to $14.50 per player. This, with the additional fee reduction for new members, should help motivate adult soccer clubs join Georgia Soccer for the benefits that we all enjoy.

Georgia Soccer’s youth participation fees haven’t been raised in the last 7 years even with the increase in cost of living and increased insurance coverage costs.

In order to find the dollars in our operating budgets, Georgia Soccer is relying on a few strategies:
  1. The Georgia Soccer Board anticipates that there will be growth in adult membership and positive economies of scale with that growth. That is, more adult soccer clubs joining (in some cases from youth affiliates creating adult programs) thus sharing the benefits and keeping costs down.
  2. Sponsorship this year has generated new dollars that will offset this decrease in fees and help maintain youth fees.

Already we can feel the impact of this decision. Three adult clubs have already submitted and on Saturday were approved to join Georgia Soccer.

Team sports is a great way to relive stress, keep fit and have fun. Why not put together an adult soccer team all your own?

Silverbacks Interim Head Coach Eric Wynaldafielded a lineup that featured several changes from last week’s squad that fell to FC Edmonton in Atlanta. Goalkeeper Daniel Illyes, defender Beto Navarro, midfieldersMilton BlancoDanny Barrera, and Paulo Mendes, and forward Pedro Mendes were all drafted into the starting lineup against the Strikers on Friday night.
The visiting lineup didn’t seem to matter much to the hosts, as the Strikers took the lead within the first five minutes. Silverbacks defenderAndrew Duran lost the ball in the back, giving Strikers forward Mark Anderson an opportunity to feed forward Paulo Araujo Jr., who curled an impressive finish past a diving Daniel Illyes for a 1-0 lead.
The home team doubled their advantage in the 28th minute after Silverbacks midfielder Nico Colaluca misfired on a pass from a short corner kick. The Strikers picked off the pass in their own defensive half, and orchestrated a successful counter-attack that finished with midfielder Walter Restrepo feeding Anderson for their team’s second goal.
The Silverbacks stayed strong, though, and it only took four minutes for them to cut the hosts’ lead in half. Pedro Mendes was hauled down in the penalty area by Strikers defender Jack Stewart, who was lucky to avoid a red card. The Brazilian forward then converted the penalty kick to make it 2-1 in the 32nd minute.
The wild first half continued in the 41st minute when the Silverbacks found the back of the net to pull themselves even with the Strikers. Defender Chris Klute dribbled inside and dished a pass to forward Matt Horth, who powered a left-footed shot past Strikers goalkeeper Matt Glaeser to tie the score at 2-2.
The momentum continued for the Silverbacks early in the second half, with Horth missing just over the bar following a counter-attack. In the 54th minute, however, it was the Strikers retaking the lead. Forward Aly Hassan snuck past Silverbacks defender Martyn Lancaster to poke a shot into the net at the near post, making the score 3-2.
Hassan struck again in the 67th minute, and going along with the theme of the night, the goal came on a Strikers counter-attack. Substitute midfielder Alfonso Motagalvan fed the tall forward, who bent the ball around Illyes to give the Strikers a two-goal lead for the second time in the game.
Just as they did in the first half, the Silverbacks fought back, pulling within a goal in the 76th minute. Horth’s low cross from the right side found Paulo Mendes, who finished calmly past Glaeser to cut the Strikers’ lead to 4-3. The goal meant that both of the Mendes brothers scored a goal in their first professional starts.
The Strikers’ one-goal lead late in the game forced the Silverbacks to push forward to find an equalizer, and it was in the midst of their offensive push that the Strikers would put the game away. A long clearance over the top of the defense found the foot of Restrepo, who made no mistake, rolling a shot past Illyes to make the score 5-3 and clinching all three points for the Strikers.
The Silverbacks and Strikers meet again next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta, kicking off the month of August, which will feature three home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. To purchase tickets, call 404-969-4900 or visit atlantasilverbacks.com.

The Silverbacks (3-5-10) were looking for their third straight win against last-place FC Edmonton(4-4-9), but their momentum was stopped after the visitors scored two second-half goals in a span of three minutes.
The game started slowly on a wet and muggy Saturday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Neither side was able to create any meaningful scoring chances early on, but in the 32nd minute, FC Edmonton looked as if they were going to go on top. Forward Yashir Pinto was played in on goal with only Silverbacks goalkeeper Joe Nasco to beat, but the Chilean’s shot was saved well by a diving Nasco, keeping the game scoreless.
The Silverbacks answered Pinto’s effort almost immediately, nearly scoring a goal of their own two minutes later. Forward Matt Horth fired a powerful half-volley towards goal, but John Smitswas there to deny him his fifth goal in his last six games.
After a quiet opening 45 minutes, it became clear just minutes into the second half that final 45 minutes were going to be quite the opposite. In the 47th minute, forward Danny Barrera was denied from close range by FC Edmonton goalkeeper John Smits, and two minutes later, Horth came close with a point-blank header that sailed just over the crossbar.
Against the run of play, FC Edmonton would tally the game’s first goal. Just minutes after entering the game, substitute midfielder Serisay Barthelemy took a pass from midfielder Shaun Saiko and buried a shot into the side netting for a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.
It then became a two-goal advantage for FC Edmonton just two minutes later when Pinto blocked a low clearance from Nasco and easily slotted the ball into an open net.
The 2-0 deficit didn’t deter the home team, though, as they continued to push forward and put pressure on the FC Edmonton defense. The Silverbacks would be rewarded for their efforts in the 73rd minute when Jonathan Joseph-Augustin hauled down Horth in the penalty area. Horth had a clear goal-scoring opportunity at the time of the foul, and the referee deemed it worthy of a red card.
Horth and substitute midfielder Paulo Mendes each had opportunities late in the game to equalize, but a second goal wasn’t in the cards for the Silverbacks, who fell to 2-0-2 under new interim head coach Eric Wynalda.
Next up for the Silverbacks are the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, who will play host to Wynalda’s team on Friday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium. As always, the game can be seen live online at atlantasilverbacks.com/live.

Three players on the Under-20 national team preparing to play in a tournament in Northern Ireland are from metro Atlanta: goalkeeper Cody Cropper and defenders Holden Fender and Walker Zimmerman.
The U.S. team will open the Northern Ireland Milk Cup against Denmark on Saturday and will play Turkey on Monday. The championship game will be Thursday.
This will be the second time two of those players have appeared in the Milk Cup: Zimmerman, who grew up in Lawrenceville and plays at Furman, and Cropper, who grew up in Norcross and Duluth and is training with a team in England.
This will be the debut on the U-20 national team for Fender, who played for Walton High and the Concorde Fire club team and will attend UCLA in the fall. He said he's fitting in with the squad.
"Any time you get to put on the jersey for the U.S. it's exciting," Fender said. "At a tournament like this you couldn't ask for anything more."
The team arrived in England (Cropper lives near London) earlier in the week and began training at Liverpool's Academy.
The team has worked different formations, alternating between a 4-4-2 and 4-3-3, and building chemistry as it prepares for the tournament, which also will feature teams from Ireland, Chile and Mexico.
Along with Fender, there are three other new call-ups in camp, meaning most of the team has played together before.
"I would say, at this stage we've been playing soccer long enough that it's almost like a habit, the way we train and prepare," Zimmerman said. "We are doing a lot of fitness and getting ready. Now it's just going over there and doing what you can do. It's serious, but fun that you could get to play with a bunch of talented guys."
The players have aspirations of one day joining Cropper as pros. Cropper played for Ipswich Town in England for 2 1/2 years but then opted out of his contract. He is on trial with Southampton, which earned promotion to the Premier League. He said he hopes to receive a contract soon.
"I think I have a good opportunity in front of me," he said.
