The State Rec Cup tournament committee is announcing a new format for this year’s Championship event that will provide recreational teams with great competition, predetermined venues, reduced travel time for the majority of teams and an updated format crowning State Champs in 5 games over 3 days!

Round-robin games will be played the weekend of May 12-13, each team will play a minimum of 3 games. Teams advancing out of the round-robin will play their semi-final on Sunday afternoon, May 13. Championship matches will be played Saturday, May 19 – soon to be known as 'Champions Saturday'.

New this year, State Rec Cup and President’s Cup Championship matches will be played at the same location on‘Champions Saturday’ - showcasing the very best of Georgia Soccer at both the recreational and mid-select levels! It will be a great day, with exciting games for players, fans and soccer lovers of all ages.

[REGION III BOYS] Georgia led all state associations with four teams in the boys finals at the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III Championships in Baton Rouge, La. Concorde Fire Elite captured the under-15 title and finished second in the under-16 division.

In the U-17 age group, Alpharetta Ambush Red beat GSA Phoenix Red, 4-1, in an all-Georgia final, scoring three times in the overtime. GSA Phoenix Red is headed to the National Championships as the National League champion.

Concorde's big forward, Cameron Moseley, drove in the winner in the 54th minute to lead it past Mexicas (S-TX), 1-0l in the under-15 final.

Concorde fell to RSL Florida, 2-1 in overtime in the U-16 final.

Triangle United SA Gold was the only team to repeat as champions as they knocked off Edmond OFC, 4-1.

Lonestars Red won the under-14 championship without conceding a goal during the entire tournament.

As a representative of one of Forsyth County’s most successful soccer organizations, the FFSC Board continually seeks ways to offer the best in soccer for our community’s recreational, intermediate and advanced players.  In an effort to increase opportunities and provide an even greater level of service, we are pleased to announce the upcoming merger of the Forsyth Fusion Soccer Club with Atlanta Soccer Academy to form the United Futbol Academy (UFA).

The combined strengths of each organization will provide a superior soccer program at all levels of play, making this already widely popular sport even more accessible. The combined resources of each organization will also enable all soccer players in our community to enjoy soccer at their level of enjoyment and compete at their highest level of ability.

United Futbol Academy will be under the leadership of Iggy Moleka as Executive Director of Coaching, Gaucho Pinho as Executive Director of Specialized Training, Don Schultz as Executive Director of Operations, and Deo Moleka as Executive Director of Development. The leadership team brings more that 46-years of combined experience to the United Futbol Academy in training, development and the operations management of a soccer program.

The combined organizations bring strengths in communications, training programs, and team development as well as strong relationships with the Forsyth County Parks & Recreational Department and other soccer organizations throughout the world.

The Atlanta Soccer Academy and Forsyth Fusion Soccer Club will continue operating through the end of the Spring 2010 season.  No changes will be made with teams or uniforms during this period.

United Futbol Academy will hold combined select tryouts starting the first of June 2010 and all of the current facilities are available for use of this event as well as in the future.  All team formations will be determined for Fall 2010 during this combined tryout process. Anticipated coaching assignments for the Fall 2010 season will be posted in early May.

The United Futbol Academy will be open for registration for both select and recreational programs by April 26, 2010.

The Atlanta Soccer Academy and Forsyth Fusion Soccer Club will cease operations as independent organizations on May 31, 2010.

Bert Leonard, well known in Georgia coaching circles and currently an ODP coach, has worked over the last several years to develop the use of video analysis tools to better understand what actually occurs in a game. Bert has become one of the leading proponents and experts in this field in the US, attracting many to this approach. His work has continued to expand to cover programs at the highest level, including leading club teams, prominent college programs, and others.

Recently, Bert has begun working with the US Women's National Team program to provide comprehensive video analysis of their games.   Congratulations, Bert ,and keep Georgia Soccer proud of your efforts!

There are still six days left to be the face of U.S. soccer.

Over the past month we've been collecting letters written to FIFA by U.S. soccer fans like you. Soon we'll choose one of these letters to feature in the opening pages of our official Bid Book -- so you can tell FIFA in your own words why they should pick the U.S. to host the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018 or 2022.*

There are some incredible stories in the hundreds of letters we've already received. Here's one I'd like to share with you today:

Greetings. For more than 35 years, I have lived and breathed soccer in the United States. As a player, as a high school coach, and even as a Political Science professor (yes, I have taught soccer at university), I have experienced first hand the meaning of the often-quoted phrase that "soccer is democracy on grass." Anyone can play, whether small or large, quick or slow, black or white, immigrant or native, rich or poor, tall or short. But what makes "democracy on grass" so special in the United States is that here it reflects the incredible diversity of the sport worldwide.

On soccer fields across America, you find virtually every type of person playing the game: whether you are in Iowa or Texas, Illinois or Florida, Oregon or New York, soccer in the United States unites people across languages, races and cultures in ways most other countries cannot. American soccer fields are little U.N. General Assemblies scattered throughout the American countryside where diverse people come together in a common bond, with a common purpose. I have learned Spanish, German, Arabic and even a little Ibo on American soccer fields. Soccer in America gives us the example of democracy as sport that is transferable to democracy as governance. What better lesson could I offer my students than in engaging them on the soccer field?

A new soccer championship (league), potentially an alternative to Major League Soccer (MLS), will be created in the United States next season unless a dispute between clubs and their league can be resolved.
The United Soccer Leagues (USL), which runs soccer from the professional division below the top tier MLS down to regional youth leagues, faces losing at least eight of its leading professional clubs.
The USL, founded in 1986, was owned by Nike until last week when it was sold to Atlanta-based company Nu Rock Soccer Holdings, a move which foiled a bid by a consortium of leading clubs to purchase the league.
Now those clubs, including franchises in major cities such as Miami, Atlanta and Minnesota are threatening to breakaway and form a new league.
A statement from the eight teams talked of a "commitment to achieving a team-owner controlled league" and said the group would pursue all avenues to do so.
Selby Wellman, owner of the Carolina Railhawks and spokesman for the eight teams, said a breakaway league was on the agenda.
"It is certainly one of the options," he told Reuters in an interview. "We are clearly at odds with USL, we have been at odds with them for two years over the fact that we are the only league in the world that doesn't have (team) owners controlling it," he added.
Selby said the teams, which also include franchises in Montreal and Vancouver in Canada and Tampa Bay and St.Louis, would be open to a compromise with the USL but that he was not optimistic common ground could be found.
"I have to be honest and say that my expectations of it are quite low -- if you just bought a league for that money and put it in Nike's pockets you are probably unwilling to turn it over to other people.
"We have been at this for two years..we are not willing to start all over again and drag it out for another year or so. Quite frankly we are tired."
USL CEO Tim Holt said: "We've seen the announcement, which contains several incorrect statements but we don't want to comment right now.
"At the moment we are focussed on and excited about preparing the future of our professional divisions, we would prefer not to get caught up in a war of words."

In their continuing efforts to include and provide information to the total Georgia soccer community on all aspects of soccer, including college soccer, Georgia Soccer has linked all the college soccer schedules in their web site - www.gasoccer.org

These college schedules can now be found at www.gasoccer.org, under the ‘STATE INFO’ by clicking on the ‘COLLEGE SOCCER LISTINGS’ drop-down menu item.

As they progress into more website enhancement, Georgia Soccer will continue to add more info and interactivity to their site.

In addition, Georgia Soccer plans to add the following, based on recent feedback they received from college soccer coaches throughout the state:

1. College soccer article of the month - short articles about the college recruiting process, what college coaches look for, what the life/schedule of a college soccer player is like, and more information that would be helpful to young players preparing for college.

2. National ‘D’ coaching courses exclusively for current college players at a few Georgia area college campuses exclusively for college soccer players. These courses will be instructed by Jacob Daniel, the State DOC (Director of Coaching), and will be offered for the student athletes at an incredible discount of $25 per player. These courses normally run $125 for members of GA Soccer and $500 for non-members of GA Soccer.

3. Regional Coaching Symposiums. Georgia Soccer is planning 3-4 regional coaching symposiums for our youth coaches to be held at area Georgia college facilities. These symposiums will offer coaching topics not covered by the standard coaching courses. Plans are for these to be one-day events on Sundays starting in spring/summer of 2010. College team players may be used for the clinics or also youth players from the local clubs or a combination of both. Selected sites will provide the ideal geographic coverage of the state.

Atlanta’s World Cup dreams are still intact. The city is on a pared-down list of potential host cities for the bid to bring the World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022, Atlanta Sports Council president Gary Stokan said.

Atlanta is one of 27 cities that made the cut from the list of 58 metropolitan areas that submitted proposals about three weeks ago. The list will be announced Thursday by the bid committee.

“It’s great news for the city of Atlanta,” Stokan said. “Certainly, it goes to show the credibility that the city has from its past hosting history.”

Atlanta’s candidacy was boosted by two international soccer exhibitions at the Georgia Dome this summer that both drew more than 50,000 fans, the second of which was attended by bid committee members.

The list will be trimmed down to 18 by the end of the year, and the committee will submit its proposal to FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, next May.

There will be a memorial service this evening, Wednesday, August 19, at 7:00pm. for Father Joseph Caffrey. Father Caffrey, a beloved member of the Georgia Soccer Hall of Fame, was one of the pioneers of Georgia Soccer, an early Director of Coaching, as well as the first Executive Director of Georgia Soccer. Father Joe Caffrey, former Father and and teacher/coach at The Marist School, died Tuesday, July 21, in Dublin (Ireland) from a brain tumor, surrounded by his family.

Again, the service will be held at 7:00 p.m. this evening (Wednesday, August 19) at Our Lady of Assumption Church:
