NO SILVERBACK LINING
Atlanta does not renew Haynes' coaching contract

ATLANTA -- Brian Haynes, who directed the Atlanta Silverbacks against the New York Cosmos in Soccer Bowl, will not return as coach of the North American Soccer League team.

The Silverbacks announced Monday that they have decided not to exercise the contract extension on Haynes for the next season.

The Cosmos defeated the Silverbacks, 1-0, to win the NASL championship in Atlanta on Nov. 9.

“The decision not to exercise Brian’s contract extension was an incredibly difficult one,” Silverbacks president and general manager Andy Smith sai in a statement. “Brian deserves a tremendous amount of credit for leading the club to a NASL spring season championship, but the organization felt that the team did not meet its expectations towards the end of the season.”

It was a tale of two seasons for the Silverbacks under Haynes. The club clinched a dramatic championship on the final night of the NASL spring season, finishing one point clear of the Carolina RailHawks and San Antonio Scorpions. The spring season title earned the team a place in Soccer Bowl.

The fall season was an entirely different story for the Silverbacks. The team accumulated only 16 points over 14 games, posting a minus eight goal differential, losing five of its last six games and finishing in seventh place out of eight teams.

“We ended the 2013 season on a downward trend and failed to generate any momentum going into the Soccer Bowl,” Silverbacks chairman Boris Jerkunica said in a statement. “The organization didn’t feel good about the direction we were going in 2014, and had to make the tough decision of declining Brian’s contract option.”

Haynes posted an overall record of 10-9-7 in his first full season in charge of the Silverbacks. He assumed the position in late 2012, taking over for then interim head coach Eric Wynalda, who is the club’s technical director.

“On behalf of the entire Silverbacks organization, we wish Brian the best of luck moving forward,” Jerkunica said.

Wynalda will continue to oversee the club’s soccer operations as it prepares for next season.
Due to a number of last-minute requests, we will be extending the registration deadline for our winter Youth League through Saturday, November 30th!
We are still accepting registrations for any of the age groupings from U8 through U14

Atlanta, Ga. (November 14, 2013) - The Atlanta Silverbacks organization took another step in furthering its player development side, announcing Thursday that they will field a reserve team in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in 2014.
The Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves, who will play their home games in the stadium at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, will open NPSL play in May. The Reserves competed in the NPSL from 2011-2012, sending a number of their players to the Silverbacks professional side, which plays in the North American Soccer League (NASL).
"We're very excited to announce the Reserves' return to the NPSL in 2014," said Silverbacks President & GM Andy Smith. "Based on the success we have had developing players in the past, we feel like the Reserves are an extremely important element to our organization."
Five former members of the Reserves have eventually signed with the Silverbacks professional team: goalkeeper ERIC ATI, defender CHRIS KLUTE, midfielder BORFOR CARR, and forwards JAHBARI WILLIS and JUNIOR SANDOVAL. Ati, Carr, and Willis are still with the club, while Klute has since moved on to Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids and Sandoval to CD Marathï¿Â½"n in the Honduran first division.
"The Atlanta Silverbacks, finalists in this year's NASL Soccer Bowl, are known as one of the top player development clubs in the NASL, and they have an impressive track record of players successfully moving to Major League Soccer," said NPSL Commissioner Michael Hitchcock. "We're excited to welcome back the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves, who will use the NPSL as an important part of their player development model."
The Reserves' ownership group of Boris Jerkunica, John Latham, Henry Hardin III, John Hardin, and Chris Goeckel has appointed RICARDO MONTOYA as head coach of the Reserves. The Costa Rican served in the same capacity during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, most recently leading the team to a second-place finish in the NPSL Southeast Conference.
"I want to thank Silverbacks Chairman Boris Jerkunica, Technical Director Eric Wynalda and the rest of the club's management for showing their confidence in me as a coach," said Montoya. "The Reserves are very important to the organization, and I can't wait to start scouting, recruiting, and competing in an environment that I'm very familiar with."
While Montoya will be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the team, the technical staff and management from the Silverbacks professional team will be directly involved in running the team. The Reserves will be used as a key vehicle for player development, and will allow the professional team to have a pool of players to select from should an injury or performance issue arise during the NASL season.
Along with Montoya, the Silverbacks professional staff will begin scouting for the 2014 Reserves immediately, and will also use the club's tryouts as a way to identify players. Tryout dates will be announced within the next week.

Members of the Georgia Gwinnett College soccer team celebrate with the trophy after beating the Ashford Saints 3-0 on Saturday to win the American of Independent Institutions championship.
Members of the Georgia Gwinnett College soccer team celebrate with the trophy after beating the Ashford Saints 3-0 on Saturday to win the American of Independent Institutions championship.

LAWRENCEVILLE — With their first postseason berth in school history, the Georgia Gwinnett College men’s soccer team delivered the school their first American of Independent Institutions soccer championship, as they defeated the Ashford Saints 3-0 Saturday night at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
“We’re the first,” said Head Coach Steve DeCou. “No one can take that away from us, but more importantly it means we will be playing next week.”
The Grizzlies (15-5) will advance to national tournament next weekend, as they found the net on three different occasions to get by the Saints (13-4-1) and snap their six-game winning streak. For the Grizzlies, it was their eighth straight victory, a program-best, as well as their eighth shutout of the season.
The game-winner came in the 52nd minute of the contest, as Martin Lugo found Ibrahimi Sissoko inside the box and the GGC midfielder found the back of the net, making it 1-0 Grizzlies. Sissoko delivered his fourth game-winner of the season
“It was a simple give and go,” Sissoko said. “I saw Martin (Lugo) open in space, pass it off and then waited to put it in.”
The goal may have come on a great execution, but Saints held off the Grizzlies attack in the first half. Despite scoring three goals in the second half, scores were hard to come by in the first period. GGC took eight shots on goal, but were held scoreless. GGC’s best scoring chance came in the 19th minute, as Callum Mordey drove a ball from the top of the box, but Ashford keeper Patrick Kinsella made a diving stop, keeping the score 0-0.
“We had the ball most of the time,” Sissoko said. “We knew we had to keep going and control the ball.”
The Grizzlies control of the ball prevented the Saints potent offensive attack from sustaining any scoring chances. The Saints, who carry five double-digit scorers on their rosters, mustered two shots during the first half. Their lone scoring threat came on a free kick from Fernando Machado in the final minute of the first half, but GGC goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe corralled the shot with ease.
“They’re an offense that averages three goals a game,” said DeCou. “I don’t think it was our defense that was giving them fits. It was our offense. We keopt the ball about 75% of the time, so they were chasing shadows all first half.”
The shadows created a larger edge. GGC added two more goals to put the game out of reach within a five-minute span. The first came as Mordey found a free ball in front of the net and pushed it through, extending the lead to 2-0, while senior forward David Burke took a rebound and found the back of the net to make it 3-0.
With a large lead at hand, the GGC squad continued to halt any scoring attacks from the Saints. Ashford would finish the match with nine shots, three on goal as they suffered their second straight A.I.I Championship Game defeat. Ashford, who made it to the A.I.I. Championship in 2012, fell to the same fate, being shutout 3-0 for the second straight season.
“That program over there has made it to the tournament three straight years,” said DeCou. “We’re coming together as a team. We’re 18 months old, we’re rookies.”
On this day, the rookies prevailed over the season veterans and will advance to the National tournament that starts next week.

LAWRENCEVILLE — Senior Rene Enang and sophomore Essie Aburime each scored as the Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team outlasted Cal State San Marcos in the Grizzlies’ first-ever postseason appearance Friday afternoon with an electric 2-1 semifinal victory on the opening day of the Association of Independent Institutions championship tournament in Lawrenceville.
After a scoreless first half, the third-seeded Grizzlies (14-4) built a 2-0 advantage before holding off a late charge from the second-seeded Cougars (10-5-2).
Georgia Gwinnett advances to face NAIA No. 3 and tournament top seed Ashford University (Iowa) today at the Grizzly Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. The Saints defeated fourth-seeded Lindenwood-Belleville by a 6-1 margin in Friday’s other semifinal.
The Grizzlies built a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half against CSUSM and created several quality scoring opportunities, but the game remained scoreless into the half.
After the break, GGC pushed until finally opening the scoring in the 64th minute. German Rodriguez played a ball through to Enang, who boxed out his defender, turned on goal and fired it past Cougars goalkeeper Zach Sheppard for a 1-0 GGC lead.
The Grizzlies added to their advantage 15 minutes later, tallying the eventual game-winner as Enang connected with Aburime in space in the CSUSM box. The sophomore found the back of the net as GGC took a two-goal lead.
Aburime’s score proved vital when just over a minute later, the Cougars climbed onto the board by capitalizing on a free kick opportunity on the attacking end. Dustin Scibilia won a battle in traffic and headed it in to cut the GGC lead to 2-1 in the 80th minute.
The Grizzlies held tough over the final 10 minutes, turning aside several Cougar attacks and winning possession for much of the final time remaining.
Freshman Lewis Sharpe made three saves in goal for the Grizzlies, who have won seven consecutive games.
Cal State San Marcos 3, GGC women 1
The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of second-seeded Cal State San Marcos in the rain Friday evening in the final game on day one of the Association of Independent Institutions championship tournament in Lawrenceville.
Natalie Leone scored a first-half goal to tie the game for the Grizzlies, but Paulina Good’s go-ahead goal and two scores from Dani Porter were too much to overcome.
The Grizzlies (14-4-1) had allowed just 12 goals all season entering the night and withstood 12 corner kicks on the evening for the Cougars.
Cal State San Marcos (10-5-1) advances to today’s championship game against top-seeded Ashford, who took down Lindenwood-Belleville earlier Friday, 7-1.
“It was a tough one tonight,” Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli said. “But I was very proud, and very happy with the way we played for most of the night, especially in the first 45 minutes.
“I want to thank these seniors for everything they did to get us here to this game tonight and the remarkable season we’ve had. And now, tomorrow we come out and support the men’s team. We want to represent Georgia Gwinnett.”
Porter gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap, breaking free on net in the seventh minute and scoring just the seventh goal all season on GGC goalkeeper Mo Gutierrez.
The Grizzlies responded with a strong offensive attack, and Leone eventually knotted the game on a feed from Mackenzie Bailey in the 31st minute.
The teams went into halftime tied, 1-1, with GGC taking a 5-4 shot advantage into the break.
In the second half, the end-to-end action opened up, and CSUSM took advantage of a couple of unsettled situations.
Good received a ball from Ashley Graves near the edge of the box and fired one through traffic and into the back of the net to break the tie.
The Grizzlies pushed for the tying score and created several opportunities, but the Cougars would add to their lead.
Porter’s second goal, this time on a pass from Jacqueline Lara in the 76th minute, added an insurance score for CSUSM.
The Cougars finished with a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks and a 12-8 lead in shots.
“In the long run, we had our chances in the second half, but they are a disciplined team and they do what they do well,” Martelli added. “We showed lots of flashes but we didn’t convert.”
