32nd annual Publix Atlanta Cup Continues Scoring Streak for Atlanta

This Labor Day weekend, while some teams are just gathering to launch their fall seasons, minivans more are flocking to Atlanta for the premiere soccer tournament in the Southeast.

The Publix Atlanta Cup is the largest three-day youth soccer tournament in the Southeastern United States.  Hosted by Georgia Soccer each Labor Day weekend since 1983, the Publix Atlanta Cup hosts more than 600+ teams annually, including both male and female athletes ages 9 to 19.

The Publix Atlanta Cup brings over 13,000 athletes and over 30,000 total attendees from more than 12 states and Canada. These teams bring with them the culture of the beautiful game, making Atlanta, for three days, the youth soccer capital of the United States.

The economic landscape of Atlanta is positively impacted by the Publix Atlanta Cup, and not just downtown as with most large sporting events (e.g. Final Four, Superbowl). The tournament uses over 20 venues and more than 110 soccer fields throughout the metro Atlanta area.  It is estimated that over $3 million in revenue each year is generated in the Atlanta community by the Publix Atlanta Cup.

The Atlanta Sports Council, a division of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as the CEO Soccer Cabinet, have taken note of the broad economic impact of the Publix Atlanta Cup, and have create some concrete growth targets. The goal is to: attract the best teams and recruiters, generate additional dollars to the community, and focus renewed attention on Atlanta as an international soccer mecca worthy of international and professional matches.

Much of the growth hinges on finding enough viable fields to add more teams, but a committee led by Atlanta Beltline President and CEO, Brian Leary and Rick Skirvin, Georgia Soccer Executive Director, along with the longtime Tournament Director Sharron Safriet, are tasked with growing the tournament to 800 teams by 2015 and 1200 teams by 2020.  This growth would take our Publix Atlanta Cup from the largest in the Southeast to one of the very the largest in the World.

Regardless of size, Georgia Soccer and The Publix Atlanta Cup is committed to providing competitive matches for all teams, maintaining a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, and showcasing Atlanta as the premier soccer city in the Southeast.

Joe Cole set to join Lille | Mail Online

Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole is set to join French side Lille on a season-long loan deal.

Cole, who has endured a troubled time at Anfield after signing on a free transfer last summer, had attracted interest from Tottenham and QPR.

But the former Chelsea star is believed to be undergoing a medical at Lille later on Tuesday.

The move could trigger a quick-fire sale of Lille's star winger Eden Hazard, with Arsenal and Liverpool among his pursuers.

Harry Redknapp opened the door to the idea of a reunion with Cole at Tottenham last week.

But the lure of Champions League football with the French champions appears to have swayed Cole's decision.

The 29-year-old has been frozen out by Reds boss Kenny Dalglish and the midfielder accepts he must leave Liverpool to rekindle a career which has stalled since a serious knee injury two-and-a-half-years ago.

'I like Joe and no-one knows him better than me,' said Redknapp.

'I wouldn't sit here and say to you that I wouldn't sign him, because I'd be lying. I signed him when he was 11 and I watched him grow up.

'He was the best young footballer I've ever seen. I've never seen anyone who could come anywhere near him.

'I'd love the chance to work with him again, because he's a talent and a great lad. He loves football, works hard and loves training.'

Owen Hargreaves has Manchester City medical | Mail Online

Owen Hargreaves is on the brink of a sensational move to Manchester City.

After being discarded by arch rivals Manchester United this summer, the injury-ravaged midfielder is set to sign a one-year deal at the Etihad Stadium. He is expected to be unveiled later on Tuesday.

Hargreaves was pictured leaving the Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester at Tuesday lunchtime after three hours of tests.

He is now expected to join big-spending City in the most astonishing of the transfer window.

Hargreaves exclusively told Sportsmail on Saturday how he was confident of playing 40 games this season and making a late bid for England's squad for Euro 2012.

Tottenham and Aston Villa had joined West Bromwich Albion in the chase for the former England midfielder.

But it now appears that Roberto Mancini is set to complete his most fascinating transfer of the summer at the Barclays Premier League title chasers.

After sealing his £24million move for Samir Nasri last week, Mancini was told he could only bring players in on loan or on free transfers.

And after failing to lure Holland veteran Mark van Bommel away from AC Milan, he has now turned to Hargreaves.

The Canadian-born man, who joined United for £17m from Bayern Munich in 2007, is expected to fill a bit-part role like the one Patrick Vieira filled last season.

However, if his predictions given in an interview to Sportmail's Matt Lawton prove correct, he could emerge as the signing of the summer.

Hargreaves exclusively told Sportsmail last week: 'I'm going to blow people away.

'I'm coming back believing I can return to the level I was at before. My body feels great and my knees are perfect.

'I've just got this huge chip on my shoulder because I've been out for three years and people think I'm dead and buried.

I'd like to think I can play 40 games this season and with the right care I believe I can train every day.

'I hope to be back in the England side for the European Championship next summer. You have to have ambition.'

At England training on Tuesday, his former team-mate Wayne Rooney said: 'He's been out for a couple of years now and worked hard to try and get back. Hopefully he does get back playing. He's a great player.'

Ally McCoist praises 'special mentality' of Steven Davis - Scotsman.com

Rangers manager Ally McCoist paid tribute to Steven Davis for the way he has coped with his new role as captain and says his leadership was crucial to claiming victory over Aberdeen.
The Northern Ireland international has been wearing the armband in the absence of David Weir, who has been sidelined through injury since last month's Champions League qualifier against Malmo.

And McCoist believes Davis deserves credit for helping

his team-mates come through a tough afternoon against the Dons at Ibrox yesterday as Rangers ground out a 2-0 win to remain top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

He said: "I thought it was a captain's performance, I really did. I had a wee word with Steven at half-time because I think, the way the game was going, there were a few players looking for a little bit of help and guidance.

"Steven is one of those boys that everybody looks to and I don't think he let anybody down because he attempted to run the game and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

"The best way to describe it was that I thought it was a Rangers captain's performance, to be honest." The Rangers manager added: "People might not realise it but the Old Firm is a difficult place to play. There are a lot of players who have not been able to play at the Old Firm. It takes a special mentality. I would have to say that I think Steven Davis has got it."

Meanwhile, Alejandro Bedoya relished the opportunity to play alongside United States team-mates Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra for the first time with Rangers.

The midfielder came off the bench with just over 20 minutes to go to make his debut for his new club following his switch from Swedish side Orebro. He said: "It was cool. I don't know if it has ever been done before where three Americans have all played for the same team professionally like this. To play at a club like Rangers is a great honour for all of us and I'm just enjoying it.

"I got a couple of balls from Mo and it was just like being in the national team with him. The United States national team fans will be trying to stream the games and there is definitely a lot more interest with three of us playing here. It's great for us and it's great for a club like Rangers."

Atlanta super club Rovers FC adds another trophy to their storied history. Right after having Rovers65 win the second national championship, Quest Park Rovers (QPR) wins the Atlanta Summer Blast 2011. QPR is a side project of the Rovers White, 3 time champions of CASL. Rovers FC is the premier veteran soccer club in Georgia with Mens and Womens teams from the 30s,40s, 50s, 60s.

The tournament was played this past weekend, Aug 27 and 28 at the Georgia Soccer Park in Atlanta. The Georgia Sports Park is a privately owned sports field complex. GSP is owned and operated by the Georgia Soccer Development Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of three partners; Georgia Soccer Park LLC, Concorde Fire Soccer Club, and the Atlanta Flying Disc Club. The Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League is a new provisional partner with plans to become full partners by 2013.

QPR swept thru the tournament by beating all opponents by a combined goal count of 17 goals scored and 5 goals given up. The team was led by Golden Boot Winner Paolo Rochi and midfield general Weo Lopez.
Team captain Sharam Farmozadeh said “The boys won the tournament thru a great work rate. It was not easy playing in the August heat (mid 90s). If it wasn’t for the defense on Glenn Wilensky and Glenn Garrison, we would not have won the tournament.”

Skipper Ian Wheeler, owner of soccer school , The Soccer Pitch, was able to have his players fully prepared for the grueling tournament. The manager famous for his Total Football philosophy attributed much of the success on the fitness and technique practiced on the training ground. “Our training regimen was validated after the horror tackle that was put on Quique Lopez after one of the Jamaican defenders made a flying scissors tackle from behind. Lopez was able to brush it off and continue as our playmaker. I attribute his resilience on our demanding training sessions. ” Asked about Atlanta veteran and former Berry College standout Tom Rigsby. Wheeler exclaimed ”Tom was able to team up with his brother Andy Bothwell to add the punch to the of the squad. They simply punished the opposing midfields.”

After enjoying so much success, the team has decided to disband to take advisory roles throughout the Rovers organization. The team will now serve as motivation for future Rovers teams.

The Georgia Soccer Development Foundation, owners and operators of the Georgia Sports Park, are happy to welcome the Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League as new provisional Program Partners starting Summer 2011.  The ADASL, the premier amateur soccer league in Georgia, is adding its fantastic organization to the park’s alliance of leading Metro-Atlanta based sports programs, alongside Concorde Fire Soccer Club and the Atlanta Flying Disc Club.
Thanks to the ADASL’s donated expansion funding, the park will be adding backstop netting behind all the goals, a wonderful improvement to the park that will add to the speed and enjoyment of matches and games at GSP.  No more hunting for balls in the creek!
The leadership of the park and the league will be working together to finalize the mutually beneficial partnership status with the goal of the ADASL becoming full Program Partners during the next two years.  When the ADASL is able to donate the remaining funds necessary to becomes full Program Partners, that development funding (with some additional help) will see the creation of the much needed classroom (plus bathrooms, concessions, office) building that will facilitate local after school programs and greatly further GSP’s mission to improve people’s lives.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Five years ago, Patrice Millet learned he was in the advanced stages of a rare bone cancer. A stem cell transplant was his only hope for survival.
The businessman from Haiti underwent the procedure in the United States. After nine months of treatment and recovery, his cancer was in remission. Millet returned home in May 2007 determined to start living the life he'd always wanted: helping children from Haiti's poorest slums have a brighter future.
"Every day you see so many kids in need -- so many bad stories, tragic stories," said Millet, 49. "All my life, I wanted to do something good for my country, for the kids. (So) I said, 'This is the time. I have nothing to lose.' "
That summer, Millet sold his construction supply business and started a program called FONDAPS, which stands for Foundation Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours (Foundation of Our Lady of Perpetual Help). The program uses soccer to help children stay out of trouble and learn valuable life skills. Millet calls it "education by sport."
"I want the kids to be very good citizens," he said. "In soccer ... you need to give, you need to receive, you need team spirit, discipline, sportsmanship. ... It's not all about soccer, it's about life."
Millet started by focusing his efforts on children from Solino, one of Port-au-Prince's most dangerous slums. But going into the neighborhood to recruit young participants was risky.
"My wife didn't want me to go. She said gangs (would) kill me." But Millet was undeterred.
"I said, 'I'd rather die doing something good than die in bed.' "
While Millet was first greeted with suspicion, he was eventually accepted by the locals and children flocked to join his program. Today, hundreds of children have benefited from FONDAPS.
Soccer programs for children are rare in Haiti, and players generally must pay to participate. In Millet's program, the equipment, uniforms, shoes and training are all free for participants. He also pays the transportation and entry fees for players to compete in soccer tournaments.
"When you live in the ghetto, you don't see the world outside," he said. "I try to bring hope for them, ... to show them that (their) life is not only the reality."
Before the earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, Millet's program had expanded to three neighborhoods and involved more than 600 children, including more than 150 girls. But the quake devastated Solino and halted FONDAPS' momentum. One of the children in the program died and many lost friends and family members.
"When the earthquake came ... it became harder for the kids," Millet said. "Now, most of them live in tents. ... They have to fight for everything."
Two of the three fields where Millet had held soccer practice became large tent cities. His remaining field is located on the outskirts of Port au Prince -- too far for many of his former players to walk. But about 200 boys still make the journey. Millet believes that the difficult times have only increased the need for his work.
"In Port-au-Prince right now, there is almost no soccer field," he said. "It's very important for a kid to play. ... I try to give them joy, give them their childhood."
The children, ages 9-17, practice five days a week. And Millet often arranges games on Sundays.
"When they win, they are happy and they know that it's because they worked hard for it. ... That is the message I want to tell them," said Millet. "Sometimes you win, sometime you lose. ... But this is the way you win in life."
Since many of "his kids," as he calls them, lack father figures, Millet also acts as a role model and mentor. After practice, he and the other coaches regularly talk with the boys about what's going on in their lives. Millet constantly stresses the importance of education to them, and at times dips into his own pocket to pay their school fees.
"They don't have to steal ... or (join a) gang. They know that they can do something. They know they can believe in themselves," said Millet.
While FONDAPS is basically a one-man operation run on a shoestring budget, Millet is always looking for other ways to help his players. Usually once a week, participants receive packets of pasta, rice and beans to bring home to their families. He is also working on getting a bus to transport children to practice, and he hopes to one day establish his own school with athletic fields and programs in music and art.
Despite the challenges to keep his program going, Millet is not lacking in motivation.
"To see the joy in the face of a kid ... and you know what he's living (through) ... that makes me happy," he said. "It's so wonderful to see the progress they make in soccer, in their own life, in everything."
For Jeff Fouvant, Millet's program has been a lifeline. The 11-year-old lost his father in the earthquake and is living in a tent with 10 family members. Fouvant's entire family depends on the food he receives from FONDAPS, and Millet also pays for his school fees.
"Mr. Patrice ... he helped us a lot," said Fouvant. "He is a hero."
In 2009, Millet's cancer returned, but he's treating it with medication. He recently spent several weeks in the U.S. undergoing radiation treatment, but he insists that he's feeling good. Though cancer is a reality that Millet can't escape, he said he's happier now than he was before his diagnosis. And he's determined to do as much as he can with whatever time he has left.
"I realized how important life is, every moment," he said. "I am not ready to die yet. I have many, many things to do."
