Atlanta's entry into MLS is still three years away from playing its first game in a stadium that is not yet built, but the club recently announced as the league's 22nd team has already received deposits on 9,092 season tickets, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

As of Friday, 3,175 people have joined the Founder’s Club, putting down $50 for the right to be part of the group composed of the team’s first 5,000 supporters. Each Founder’s Club member has the right to purchase up to eight season tickets for the 2017 campaign. The $50 is refundable.

“I’m very excited about our progress,” Falcons owner Arthur Blanksaid in a statement. “In a little more than a week, we’re at more than 60 percent of the 5,000 fans who will have the opportunity to become founding members, and that’s three years before we play our first game.”

The strong early support for MLS in Atlanta goes against the conventional wisdom that Atlanta is a poor soccer market. Blank has stressed that there will be a separate demographic group interested in attending MLS matches than follows the Falcons.

But early numbers demonstrate the pent-up demand for Atlanta sports fans interested in getting tickets to the new stadium. The Falcons have built up one of the most solid base of support in the NFL.
  1. This $1.2 billion stadium, that transforms from a football venue into a soccer field, will be the home of the new Atlanta team that just became MLS' newest expansion!

Check out the video so you can see the grandiose of this project that will be open to public in 2017! Soccer is growing fast in the United States and this is conclusive evidence of it!

Atlanta Silverbacks superfan Matt Troy takes trip of a lifetime
Matt Troy. Photo courtesy NASL.

NASL: April 23, 2014 - With the Atlanta Silverbacks hosting NASL Soccer Bowl 2013, the league’s championship game, last November, Atlanta area resident Matt Troy made sure he bought tickets to go see his hometown team play for a title. What he didn’t know was that his ticket purchase would lead to him winning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to England to see his favorite sport played at the highest level.

Troy was randomly selected as the winner of the North American Soccer League’s “Win A Trip To England” Sweepstakes, which was presented by Ludus Tours, an Austin, Texas-based company that specializes in making bucket list dreams come true for their customers.

Thanks to Ludus Tours, Troy and his son, Connor, received an incredible travel package that included airfare, hotel accommodations, and field-level tickets to see Connor’s favorite team, Liverpool, host Aston Villa at Anfield. For good measure, the Troys decided to make the most of their time over there by attending another two English Premier League clashes – Everton at West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur at Swansea City. Ludus Tours helped them arrange those day trips as well.

“Everything Ludus Tours did for us was just top class – they were on top of everything,” Troy said. “They exceeded expectations and even helped us arrange everything that wasn’t a part of the sweepstakes package. It was top notch.”

So there they were, in the stands at three different English Premier League venues. All in all, the Troys witnessed 10 goals – Liverpool and Villa played to a 2-2 draw, Spurs knocked off Swansea 3-1, and Everton and West Brom split the points, tying 1-1.

The pair of Atlanta residents sat five rows behind the goal at Liverpool, took in the game at West Brom four rows from the touchline, and sat in the upper deck with Spurs fans in their away section at Swansea.

“There were so many unforgettable moments, but I think just the overall passion that the fans have over there is on another level,” Troy said. “I mean, when we were sitting with the Spurs fans that made the trip from London to Wales, it was just amazing to see how much energy they brought to the arena. Here we were, in a section of about 2,000 away supporters, and they’re louder than the home fans, singing nonstop. It was unreal.”

Troy, an avid soccer fan and a local youth soccer referee, said that the trip got him excited about the developing soccer culture in the NASL and the rest of America’s soccer leagues. He was amazed at how knowledgeable and undyingly loyal the fans were in England. “They can read intent, in terms of what a player is thinking when he has the ball,” Troy said. “The fans over there really appreciate the subtleties of the game, which is something that was very cool to see up close and personal.”

When it was all said and done, Troy and his son, Connor, had the experience of a lifetime. After returning to Atlanta and visiting the Silverbacks offices, Troy had one last thing to say about his trip.

“My son and I are just so grateful that we got the opportunity to go over there and experience such a first-class trip. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I want to make that pretty clear,” Troy said. “For the NASL and the Silverbacks to engage Ludus Tours and offer a trip like that to their fans, it just goes to show the quality of the league and how much of a top-notch operation it is. We were totally blown away, and can’t thank all of the parties involved enough.”

Terminus Legion founder Matt Stigall wants to prove soccer skeptics wrong

'I see ... absolute total passion and chaos for 90-plus minutes'

BALL BOY: Matt Stigall and soccer fans have spent four years building grassroots fan base in Atlanta.
BALL BOY: Matt Stigall and soccer fans have spent four years building grassroots fan base in Atlanta.
As CL went to press, city and sports officials were expected to announce that Atlanta's first Major League Soccer team would start playing in the proposed Atlanta Falcons stadium come 2017. Arthur Blank has pushed for years to bring a team here. Fans have also worked to show soccer bigwigs there's support in metro Atlanta. Matt Stigall, a local soccer fan, Georgia Tech alum, and marketing analyst has helped lead that grassroots effort for the past four years. What began as ATL Wants MLS morphed in January into Terminus Legion, a fast-growing 250-member fan club. Stigall recently spoke with CL about the group's efforts.
HOW IT BEGAN
In 2011, I went to the MLS exhibition game — I think it was Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, and Houston Dynamo. I wondered who was doing the petition to bring an MLS team to Atlanta. There wasn't anyone. I figured that I'll start it myself. The whole goal has been bringing together the most passionate fans. After three years of that, meeting people, doing social media, I met the core group of fans.
WHAT IT INVOLVES
It's been four years of a labor of love. I found the most passionate fans. We came up with the name, structure. We're going through the process of becoming a nonprofit organization. We have a board and a steering committee. We are built right now to grow. This isn't going away. In order for us to have that success, we need to have that structure. It will pay for merchandise, tailgates.
WHAT HE SAYS TO HATERS
There are a lot of data points that say the team will fail. But there are also data points that say it'll succeed. The truth is we don't know yet. Whether it's going to be hundreds or thousands of us in the stands, we're going to put in the work so the support on the first game is passionate. We have three years to build it. It's frustrating to see negativity, but all we can do is prove them wrong. Go to the nightly leagues at Silverbacks Park. Go watch the kids' leagues. Join the American Outlaws at Brewhouse during a U.S. soccer game or Liverpool and Tottenham fans at their respective bars. Bars fill during any soccer event. There are a lot of soccer fans here. There has not been until this point an entity to bring them all together. That's why Terminus Legion exists.
WHAT HE SEES ON OPENING DAY
I see flags. I see two-pole banners, everyone on their feet jumping around, original chants, and absolute total passion and chaos for 90-plus minutes. We're almost to the point where even if you aren't quite a soccer fan yet, you look and you see thousands of us going crazy and you're hooked immediately. That's what I envision.
Online Registration is now open. There is a $5.00 fee added for online registration, the company that collects and deposits the credit card fees also charges an additional fee. Atlanta's chase for an MLS franchise appears to be just days from reaching the finish line.
MLS announced on Monday that NFL's Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Commissioner Don Garber will make a "major" and "important" announcement in Atlanta at 5 pm ET on Wednesday. They will be joined by mayor Kasim Reed and Frank Poe, executive director of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, at the event held at Ventanas in downtown Atlanta.
The event will be streamed on MLSsoccer.com.
Blank told an Atlanta radio station last week that he was in the final stages of his expansion negotiations with MLS and that he hoped to have an announcement within the coming days.
He has long professed an interest in bringing MLS to Atlanta, and the Falcons are expected to open a new, 65,000-seat stadium in 2017, one that could use "downsizing technology" to house an MLS team.
"We think it will be unique and the only one of its kind anywhere in the world," Garber said of the technology back in December. "We’ll need to continue to work hard with Atlanta to see if this whole project makes sense for them. But I’m encouraged by the discussions and hope to be able to finalize something."
Stay tuned to MLSsoccer.com for more details from Wednesday's announcement.
Eurotech Soccer Academies, North America's premier provider of youth soccer training systems has announced its Atlanta soccer camps schedule for 2014.
Entering their 8th year of operating elite soccer camps in Georgia, the team at ESA continue to set the standard for the most complete soccer camp experience. What sets ESA soccer camps apart from other camps? Over 24 years of soccer training system development and refinement, elite European youth and pro coaches, the selection of the finest facilities available and their emphasis on small numbers training in their camps.
While ESA is entering its 8th year offering soccer camps in the Atlanta metro area, this will be their first year at Oglethorpe University. The Eurotech tradition started in Georgia in early 2001 with a camp at the University of West Georgia playing host to 150 campers. This camp moved from that campus a few of years later due to ongoing facility construction and then relocated back to Georgia finding a home at the Darlington School in 2009 and now Oglethorpe University bring the camp closer to the Atlanta Metroplex.
"The Oglethorpe campus is absolutely stunning and the facilities really offer our campers the best of everything they need for a successful week of soccer development," said Jim Risher, the National Director of Eurotech Soccer Academies. Risher also added, "strategically, the location is great and provides a really attractive location for our Atlanta metro campers. we also wanted to get out camp back in the Atlanta metro area, providing the metro area another level of convenience."
While ESA programs in Georgia have traditionally attracted as many as 150 campers per week. Enrollment for ESA's soccer camps at Oglethorpe University in 2014 will be strictly limited to the first 80 registered soccer campers. "Unlike other soccer camps, which strive to maximize the number of attending campers, we focus on optimizing the quality of the experience by taking the exact opposite approach," said Jim Risher National Director of Eurotech Soccer World's boys and girls soccer camps. Risher added, "So if you are planning on attending a Eurotech Soccer camp this year, registering early is advised."
This year's soccer camp at Oglethorpe University will include both a 4 day and 6 day session starting July 27th and running through August 1st. Full day, extended day, and overnight options are available. Finally, each session will offer something for every position from striker to goalkeeper - including a goalkeeper academy, a striker school and focused training on individual techniques and tactics.
Soccer Campers who act quickly, can also take advantage of several discount opportunities including an Early Registration discount of $25, a Returning Camper discount of $25 and a Family Camper discount of $25. Please check the EurotechSoccer.com website for details.

Over the weekend, Philly.com’s Jonathan Tannenwald reported that Atlanta would be announced as the 22nd MLS franchise. (They would be 22nd MLS team because David Beckham and MLS have not officially announced Miami as an expansion team, but rather only exercised his ownership clause. Tannenwald’s sources reported and others quickly confirmed later that April 16 seems to be the announcement date. On Tuesday, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank spoke on 680 The Fan (Atlanta) and confirmed that he is in talks with the league over an expansion franchise.
“The answer is yes. … We’re in the very final stages of doing our agreement. We hope to have an announcement this coming week,” Blank told 680 The Fan (Atlanta).
It has been reported that a potential MLS team would play at the Falcons news stadium, which is set to be finished in 2017. The new stadium is located next to the Georgia Dome. Blank spoke about some specific stadium details while on the show.
“We think it’s a tremendous fit for Atlanta from a variety of standpoints,” Blank said. “Our new stadium is being designed to accommodate potentially the World Cup and international soccer games with the roof expanding. The roof, obviously, is retractable, which means we can open and close it to any level we want to. The field will be designed to accommodate soccer. We’re enthused about that. We think the fan support in Atlanta will be incredible. An urban, downtown soccer stadium will be a tremendous hit in Atlanta.”
As Blank mentioned, the soon to be built stadium can be reconfigured and sectioned off for MLS and other soccer games. With the United States looking to possibly host the 2026 World Cup, another adequate stadium to accommodate international soccer games effectively and would only bolster the nations chances. Furthermore, by having a retractable roof, it is very possible that rain would not play a factor into any of the matches.  Likewise during the dog days of Summer, stadium officials can close the roof in an effort to keep players and spectators comfortable.
While Blank did not confirm the April 16 announcement date, he did allude that something special could happen in April.
“We’re excited about it,” Blank said. “We have an event planned for, hopefully, the middle of April in downtown Atlanta that will be very unique and special. It’ll be a tremendous celebration of the sport.”
For now, MLS circles are left dreaming about what a franchise and a strong supporter section could look like in Atlanta. It is currently the largest US city without a MLS side. Lastly, with the official addition of Orlando City SC in 2015 and the likely entrance of Beckham’s Miami franchise in 2017 or 2018, MLS is setting up a nice South East rivalry that could turn out to be as great as the Cascadia teams- Portland TimbersSeattle Sounders, and Vancouver Whitecaps.

We told you in early February that the 23rd MLS franchise was Atlanta’s to lose, and apparently they play well with the lead, as Arthur Blank is reportedly being granted his long-held wish to own a Major League Soccer franchise.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Georgia is getting an MLS team.
An announcement is scheduled for April 16 in Atlanta, a person with knowledge of the situation said Sunday. The Atlanta team would become the 22nd franchise in MLS and would open play in 2017, which is also when the new $1 billion downtown stadium is scheduled to open.
Here’s the MLS response to AJC’s query:
“A Major League Soccer official issued this statement on Sunday: “We are continuing discussions with Arthur Blank to bring a Major League Soccer expansion team to Atlanta; however, we have not finalized an agreement at this time.”
When the Falcons released their plans for a $1 billion stadium, it included goals for hosting World Cup matches and some images of the palace in soccer mode.
