MLS sets new average attendance mark for second straight year

Major League Soccer's growth in the stands continues after another record-setting season.

MLS bested its 2011 average attendance record of 17,844 by drawing an average of 18,807 fans to games this season, the league announced on Tuesday, a number that is seventh-most in the world when compared to other leagues. That number was heavily influenced by the Seattle Sounders, who drew a league record average of 43,144 to games at CenturyLink Field.

Overall, more than six million fans ventured to MLS stadiums during the regular season, and MLS trails Mexico's Liga MX by nearly 3,000 fans per game on average.

Here are the top 10 leagues based on average attendance around the world according to MLS figures:

1. German Bundesliga -- 42,387

2. English Premier League -- 35,719

3. Spanish La Liga -- 28,138

4. Italian Serie A -- 23,176

A groundbreaking ceremony for "the biggest thing Bartow has ever seen" and one of Georgia's largest construction projects—LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center—is set for Thursday at the construction site outside Cartersville in Emerson.
LakePoint Development partners—Atlanta Braves former manager Bobby Cox and current manager Fredi González and Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost—are set to join Gov. Nathan Deal to announce "one of the world’s largest and most unique amateur sports complexes," according to the press release.
The more than 1,200-acre development will feature state-of-the-art venues for more than 20 of America’s favorite sports, and 5 million square feet of mixed-use development consisting of commercial, retail and entertainment options.
Last month, Wake Park Atlanta closed on 20 acres of land in LakePoint, set to be the future home of Terminus Wake Park, the largest and most unique cable wakeboard park in North America.
"This is the biggest construction project the state has seen in a long while," Judy Sparks, partner and LakePoint's chief marketing officer, said in the release. "We are going to move roughly 15 million cubic yards of dirt, a little more than what was moved for the Kia plant in West Point, Georgia.
"LakePoint is positioned to become one of the state’s key attractions when it opens in 2014."
The most important numbers may be used to quantify LakePoint's impact on Georgia's economy. Developers say the massive Bartow County complex will create about 2,400 jobs at first and up to 26,000 when the entire development is complete, which would make it one of the largest employers in northwest Georgia.
"Not only will LakePoint have a positive effect on the economy by creating approximately 26,000 jobs and bringing more than 4 million visitors to Georgia each year, it will also promote the physical and developmental well-being of youth," said Sparks.
LakePoint's Sports Village will features 16 major league-sized baseball fields, 14 soccer/lacrosse fields, 16 fast-pitch softball and junior baseball fields, a 20-acre wake park, two Miracle League fields, and a 100,000-square-foot indoor facility for gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and other sports, as well as 5 million square feet of retail, hotels, restaurants and other amenities. Designed for sustainability, durability and injury prevention, LakePoint will be the largest installation of synthetic sports surfacing in the world.
LakePoint also will be home to three major tenants—Perfect Game USA, the "gold-standard" resource for baseball recruiting for collegiate, minor and major league scouts; LB3 Lacrosse, one of the nation’s premier organizers of Lacrosse camps, clinics and tournament travel teams; and North Atlanta Soccer Association, the largest youth soccer organizations in the southeast.
The privately-funded LakePoint project will see its first pitch, kick and shot in 2014. Construction will begin mid-winter 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson ditched his diamond formation in favor of more width against Chelsea and it paid off as Manchester United secured a priceless victory against their title rivals.
Antonio Valencia’s vibrant display on the right gave Ashley Cole more problems than he is accustomed to, and it was from his cross that United forged an early 2-0 lead in an explosive encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The Ecuadorian produced a fine run and his cross for Robin van Persie on the edge of the area was exquisite. Van Persie lashed the ball home clinically with his weaker right foot to put United further ahead.
This was the third match running in which United’s precise crossing and one-touch finishing had made the difference.
Ferguson wrote up a detailed attacking wing play and shooting session in the October 2010 issue of Elite Soccer and the goals United have been scoring lately have been the direct result of work put in at the club’s Carrington training ground.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have scored 10 goals in their last three games
Get access to the session that has helped trigger a 10-goal rush in Man United's last three matches
Although Sir Alex has opted for a diamond formation in recent matches, he knows the value of accurate balls into the area from wide positions.
In the 4-2 win over Stoke City nine days ago, Van Persie curled in a delicious fizzing cross from the left for Wayne Rooney to head in his first Premier League goal of the season.
Valencia then teed up Van Persie, just as he did at Stamford Bridge, while United’s third goal was the result of a fine cross from Rooney, with Danny Welbeck the beneficiary.
In the 3-2 Champions League win over Braga last Tuesday, United were up to their old tricks again. Javier Hernandez scored his side’s first and third goals after getting his head to precise crosses from Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley.
“This session is at the heart of why we are regarded as such a potent attacking force in the Barclays Premier League,” Sir Alex wrote in Elite Soccer.
Sir Alex has won no fewer than 12 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns in a distinguished managerial career.
Now you can benefit from his expertise by claiming your free attacking wing play and shooting session written by the man himself.
The session will help your support players engineer chances through quick, instinctive interplay on the wing and your strikers to finish first time when the ball arrives into the area.

HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 28, 2012 -- Sophomore Josh Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint College) scored on a rebound with 28 seconds left in overtime to give the James Madison men's soccer team a 2-1 win over visiting Georgia State in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Sunday afternoon at University Park.
The Dukes, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), improved their overall record to 8-5-3 and their CAA record to 6-1-2. Georgia State dropped to 4-12-0 overall and 1-8-0 in league play.
With only an Oct. 31 match at Drexel remaining, JMU has assured itself of no worse than a third-place finish in the CAA standings.
The game-winning goal came after Panthers senior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer (Seevetal, Germany/Meckelfeld) made a diving stop on a shot by JMU senior Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) from the right side of the box. However, the ball rebounded off Foermer, and Grant knocked the ball into the net from eight yards out.
It was Grant's team-leading fourth game-winner of the season.
JMU took an early 1-0 lead as Wyatt headed in a corner kick from freshman Tom Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England/Dr. Challoner's) with just 1:16 elapsed.
The Panthers drew even on a goal by sophomore Ali Elkhalil (Marietta, Ga./Walton) in the 32nd minute. Freshman William Mellors-Blair (Nottingham, England/Nottingham Bluecoat) sent a pass from the middle of the field to Elkhalik on the right side of the box. Elkhalil hit a hard shot from 15 yards out to the far post, and the ball hit the post and ricocheted to the right side of the goal.
GSU dropped its fifth straight match. The Panthers have now lost eight of 12 games by a single goal.
Game Statistics Summary:
Shots: JMU 20, GSU 7
Saves: JMU, Kyle Morton 2 (99:32); GSU, Vincent Foermer 5 (99:32)
Corner kicks: JMU 4, GSU 4
Scoring: JMU - Paul Wyatt (Tom Fouhy), 1:16
GSU - Ali Elkhalil (Williams Mellors-Blair), 31:03
JMU - Josh Grant (Wyatt), 99:32
JMU Associate Head Coach Tom Foley:
" We knew Georgia State was a good team despite their record. They knock the ball well, they defend very well, and they're never going to give up."
"We didn't give up at all. We created opportunities to score goals, we missed a few, but the guys kept working. We were able to create good opportunities in the overtime. They outworked their opponent in the overtime and were finally able to finish (a chance) and get the victory."

LONDON (AP) -- NBC's networks will televise the English Premier League under a $250 million, three-year deal that begins next season.
They will show every match from the world's most popular soccer league, taking coverage away from Fox and ESPN.
''The Barclays Premier League is the pre-eminent soccer league in the world, and is on the cusp of exponential popularity growth here in the U.S.,'' NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus said Sunday.
The company picked up Major League Soccer last year and had success with its soccer broadcasts during the London Olympics.
Criticized for using tape delay with the Olympics because of time differences, NBC will not do so with Premier League games, Lazarus said. English-language broadcasts will primarily be on cable channel NBC Sports Network, with Telemundo and mun2 used for Spanish coverage.
NBC's English-language networks will televise six live games a week. One or two of the company's other cable channels will also be used, Lazarus said, but which has not been determined yet as schedules are evaluated. Other games will be streamed live online.
The company has been seeking to expand the audience of NBC Sports Network, which was renamed from Versus after its owner, Comcast, took over NBCUniversal.
''We think we're acquiring a set of assets that has unique affluent male appeal that's very attractive to advertisers and attractive to cable operators,'' Lazarus said.
And soccer is a potential area for growth with most sports broadcast rights currently under contract, though NBC recently signed a deal with the Formula One auto racing series.
NBC Sports Network's biggest property is the NHL, whose season runs concurrently with English soccer. The EPL will be a good complement to the network's hockey coverage, Lazarus said, adding live soccer games in the morning and afternoon to prime-time NHL broadcasts.
''It's a younger skewing sport than some others out there, like some that are in a championship series right now,'' Lazarus said, in apparent reference to Major League baseball and its older viewership.
The previous three-year EPL deal with Fox, that saw some matches sublicensed to ESPN, was worth about $80 million. NBC Sports Network is in about twice as many homes in the U.S. as Fox Soccer but about 20 percent fewer than ESPN.
The EPL has sold its TV rights in Britain to BSkyB and BT for 3.018 billion pounds ($4.86 billion) in a record three-year deal from the 2013-14 season.
The EPL said NBC will deliver the ''biggest and broadest programming and promotion commitment ever in the United States'' for the league.
''The NBC Sports Group has an excellent track record in sports broadcasting,'' EPL chief executive Richard Scudamore said.
