FC GEORGIA UNITED TEAMS GO UNDEFEATED IN 2013 FLORIDA CLASSIC

Playing in the Over 60 Division of the 2013 Florida Classic at the beautiful Auburndale, Florida facility, the two Georgia teams went undefeated in the tournament played over the MLK Holiday Weekend.

FC Georgia United Over 60 Team
The Over 60 team handily won all of the three preliminary matches in their bracket, scoring 9 times without conceding a goal. In the finals, against International of Florida, after a close opening 45 minutes, the team pulled away in the second half to gain a convincing 5-2 victory. FC Georgia United Over 60 has now won this tournament three times in the last four years. Besides winning the trophy, the team also took home $1,000.00 in prize money, which the club is donating to local area charities.

FC Georgia United Over 65 Team
The Over 65 team, that played against and lost to the Over 60 team in the 2012 finals of this competition, narrowly missed out on being a finalist for a second year in a row. The team ended up a close second  in the other bracket. Only a missed penalty in the 92nd minute of one of their three matches prevented them from advancing to the finals.

FC Georgia United Background

In the spirit that “you’re never too old to compete,” the FC Georgia United Club started out several years ago when a small group of “old boys” began scrimmaging on Saturdays in the Atlanta area. Then later, since the group included a number of retirees and others who were able to “play hooky” for a couple of hours here and there, they began kicking the ball around once or twice during the week.

What started out as a small group of guys (also referred to by some as the “slackers”), has now grown to where it is not uncommon to have anywhere from 16 to 20 players show up twice a week during the week, and so many participants on Saturdays that they have to break it out and have two games going. The group now includes several over 50 guys and, recently, over 50 gals, so the level of play has sharpened, making for a more competitive environment for the older players.

Travel & Expansion

The FC Georgia United teams, now more organized, have enjoyed traveling to several soccer events outside of Atlanta. In addition to the Florida Classic, the two teams also competed in the USASA 2012 Veterans Cup National Championships held in San Diego in June (where the FC Georgia United Over 65 team won the Over 65 Division for the third year in a row!, and were recognized in December by Governor Nathan Deal at the Georgia State Capital for their accomplishment), and a combined team traveled to Japan in September, where they played several friendly games against Over 60 teams from in and around Tokyo.

With the increase in the over 50 turnout at the weekly scrimmages, the next logical step underway is gauging if there is sufficient interest and quality to form younger teams to compete in the Over 50 and Over 55 men’s and women’s divisions of tournaments, and competing under the FC Georgia United banner.

Contributing to the Community & Sponsors

One of the more rewarding aspects of involvement with the club is their goal of contributing to various causes. In addition to donating prize money and funds raised from other events, including charity soccer games, FC Georgia United was able to raise over $5,000.00 from players and sponsors for the Miyagi Boys & Girls Club of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, one of the hardest hit areas from the 2011 Tsunami. While visiting Japan last September, these funds were presented to representatives of the Boys and Girls club in a very moving ceremony prior to one of the matches in Japan.

While FC Georgia United has enjoyed good support from its sponsors in the past, they continue to look for new sponsors who share the goals of the club.

They've done it again.  U11 Benfica travelled to Savannah and came back to Atlanta champions.  The
number 5 team in the nation took on Jacksonville Football Club the nationally ranked 6th team in the nation  and routed them 3-0 in the final. Trevor McMullen, Jamie Orson, Blake Dobbs, Nickel Tillman and Devin Rajan were outstanding on defense. They gave up less than a goal per game and pushed us through to their 9th championship in 10 tries.

Major League Soccer`s 2013 SuperDraft was an unqualified success for many teams, while others didn`t do so well. Seattle Sounders may have gotten the steal of the draft with forward, Eriq Zavaleta. The sophomore out of the University of Indiana had at one point been considered a top 5 pick before sliding down to 10th for no apparent reason. Zavaleta, who scored 18 goals in 2012, tied for third most in Division 1. He can also play defense and that may be where he fits in best in Seattle. It may take awhile to see the results, but Vancouver also appeared to be a big winner on draft day. The Whitecaps, who had the number 5 pick, traded with Toronto to also get the number 4 pick. The team chose two forwards, Kekuta Manneh and Erik Hurtado. Though they are both considered raw talents, the Whitecaps hope they will someday form a potent one-two punch up front. Another of the MLS`s Canadian teams, Toronto FC, also had a good draft. Despite trading away some of its picks, TFC snagged a couple of top young Canadians. With the No. 3 pick, the club took midfielder, Kyle Bekker, a star at Boston College and the MVP of the MLS Combine. Bekker is a member of the Canadian U-23 national team and is expected to join the senior national team, too. With its other first-round pick, TFC took another Canadian and youth teammate of Bekker`s, Emery Welshman, who is a striker. New England may be the overall SuperDraft winner. After trading up to get the No.1 pick from Toronto FC, the Revolution took Andrew Farrell as the overall top pick. Farrell, a very athletic defender from Louisville who can play just about anywhere on the back line, is expected to make an immediate impact in New England. One other big winner in the draft appears to be the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids got a speedy forward, DeShorn Brown, a steady midfielder in Dillon Powers and a defender, Kory Kindle, that scouts say may have the most room to grow of any player in the draft. On the flip side, a couple of teams left analysts scratching their heads on draft day. Dallas FC took a player that some considered a potential No. 1 pick, defender Walker Zimmerman. That seems like a solid pick; however, Dallas is extremely deep at the position Zimmerman plays. In taking Zimmerman, Dallas also passed up on some other players that might have better filled the holes in its roster. Dallas`s second pick was even more of a head scratcher. While Ryan Hollingshead had a distinguished career at UCLA, he plans to take at least a six-month break from soccer to help his brother build a church. The other team whose draft day decisions have been widely questioned is Philadelphia. The Union took relative unknowns in forward, Don Anding and midfielder, Stephen Okai with their first two picks, even though the team seems to need the most help on defense. With the MLS SuperDraft behind us, it will be a month and a half until the MLS season kicks off. In the meantime, you`ll satisfy your need for soccer by watching European league matches at www.livefootball.net.

Rovers White win the 2013 Jack Frost Tournament for the third time

Rovers White won the the 2013 Jack Frost Tournament for the third time with a 2-1 won last minute victory over Cruzeiro. Jack Frost is the premier over 30s tournament in Georgia and  is organized and sponsored by Atlanta Metro Soccer League. The tournament THE SENTINELS of FREEDOM, Duluth Chapter, Duluth, GA

"Since 9/11, for every American who has died in battle, dozens more have survived, thanks to cutting edge medical care. That means, unlike any other time in history, many more severely wounded are coming home, faced with the challenges of putting their lives back together.
Sentinels Of Freedom provides four year “life scholarships” to help vets become self- sufficient. Our vets are finding that once they’re released from the hospital, they face the everyday hardships of finding a home, continuing their education, or going to work to support their families. Every American faces the same difficulties, but in the vet’s case, the situation is made more difficult because of their sacrifice."

Rover White won the tournament with a last minute strike by Franklin Young over a stubborn Cruzeiros team. This is the third time that the Rover White wins the competition.

The Rovers White is an over 30s team that is part of the Rovers Soccer Club of Atlanta Georgia. The club is the largest and most successful veterans clubs in Georgia. The teams have been winning in over 30, 40, 40, 50 and 60 years competitions including the 2012 Over 60 National Championship. Rovers White is led by player/coach Mike Kinion, member of the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA).

Cruzeiro is coached/managed by Fernando Chaltein and led by striker Paolo Rochi. Fernando is the organizer of the infamous Cinco de Mayo 7v7 cup in Atlanta

Revolution sign Atlanta Silverbacks Matt Horth

“[Horth] is a talented young player who had had a strong record of scoring goals in the NASL," said Revolution General Manager Michael Burns. "We believe has the potential to take the next step and do well for our club.”
Horth played collegiately Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., where he was a four-year starter. In 74 career appearances (72 starts), Horth scored 36 goals and added 20 assists and was a three-time All-New England honoree and a two-time first-team all-conference performer. Horth also spent time with PDL clubs Cape Cod Crusaders (2008), Southern California Seahorses (2009) and Cleveland Internationals (2010) while in college.
Revolution spring draft picks
Last week, the Revolution picked four players at the MLS SuperDraft: Andrew Farrell, Donnie Smith, Luke Spencer and Luis Soffner. The club also picked up four players in the Supplemental Draft: Jossimar Sanchez, Chris Thomas, Alex De John and Gabe Latigue. As a Generation adidas player, Farrell already signed with MLS, bu the other draft picks will have to battle for a roster spot in the preseason.
