WFT World Cup IV
The World Futbol Tour officially announces the location for the WFT 3v3/6v6 World Cup IV on July 27-28, it's Charleston, SC. What
better place than the #1 destination in North America! Get ready for beaches, beach soccer, freestyle & juggling competitions, international teams, fantastic Southern cuisine and good ol' fashion fun!
Our WC IV will also feature international 3v3 teams from Norway, Costa Rica, Mexico, and possibly more countries. Stay tuned for more details in the months ahead. Now it's time to qualify.

Why is small sided Free/Pickup play so important?
It is the essence of learning any sport such as soccer, basketball, hockey,... Unfortunately, most young players in the US do not get nearly enough chances to play for themselves compared to their counterparts all over the world. They sorely lack the number of touches and freedom to make their own decisions without adult intervention (pickup sport).
The WFT is proud to be able to provide some help with a 3v3 game that is 100% dedicated to their personal soccer development. All we ask is for their parents and 3v3 coaches to step back and enjoy their children's abilities and their desire to explore their soccer passion during match play.

German Street Cup unites Atlanta youth

The fourth edition of the German Street Cup was held on November 18th at the Atlanta International School. This annual community soccer tournament is held by Soccer in the Streets in partnership with the German Consulate General Atlanta and the German Cultural Center (Goethe Zentrum Atlanta).
Turnout increased from previous years, with nearly 50 participants. These participants were divided into the Junior (U11) and Senior (U16) divisions. Each team was required to have at least one German speaking player. Each player was given an official German Street Cup t-shirt and placed on a team. Teams were assigned so as to give each player an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
In the Senior Division the teams were Bayern Munich (Peach), FC Barcelona (Red), Manchester United (Blue), and Real Madrid (Green). The Junior Division decided to stick with the classic Blue, Green, and Red team monikers. Teams played two 10 minute periods (separated by a brief halftime) to determine who would be crowned German Street Cup Champions at the end of the day.
Initial hesitance and shyness waned and was replaced with chemistry as the first games of the afternoon kicked off. Parents eagerly looked on from the stands as their children starred on the fields as games were played. On Field 1, frustration set in for Real Madrid as failure to communicate lead to a disappointing loss to FC Barcelona. Meanwhile on the adjacent field, there was a barnburner between Bayern Munich and Manchester United, with United narrowly escaping in an 8-7 thriller. On the U11 field, Green and Blue started with the first match in the Junior Division. While the Blue team got off to a hot start, the Green team exhibited poise beyond their years with excellent crosses and stellar defense to come away with the victory.
At the end of the day, Manchester United emerged victorious from the Senior Division; while the Green team took top honors in the Junior Division. At the end of the day sportsmanship reigned supreme, as Real Madrid (Green) from the Senior Division and the Blue team of the Junior Division were honored with the Fair Play Award. The Champions along with the Fair Play Award winners all received trophies as well as authentic German National Team gear. As the festivities drew to a conclusion, all in attendance said that the German Street Cup was extremely enjoyable and “a success!” or as they say in German,“Ein Erfolg!”

Community Votes to Keep Silverbacks Name

Fans rallied behind the decision Thursday at a party at Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Atlanta.
After thousands of votes and plenty of deliberation among the city’s soccer fans, the name of Atlanta’s professional soccer team will remain the Silverbacks. The Silverbacks name received the most votes during the club’s recent “Decision 2012” campaign, with the verdict being announced Thursday night in front of a packed house at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in downtown Atlanta.
“While the results ended up being very close, the fans have voted in favor of the Silverbacks,” said Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith. “That’s really what this campaign was all about – getting the community involved and giving them the power to choose the direction of our professional team. The fans are the ones that keep us going, so allowing them to take part in such a big decision was really important to us.”
The campaign lasted for nearly two months, and it included three other voting options besides the Silverbacks name. Fans could vote for the Atlanta Chiefs, the name of the city’s first ever professional soccer team, Atlanta FC, a more European-style name, or they could write in a name of their own choosing.
The Hard Rock CafĂ© in downtown was packed with fans, sponsors, and media – many of whom placed their votes at some point during the campaign. Former U.S. Men’s National Team star and current Silverbacks Team Advisor Eric Wynalda served as the emcee, setting up the name announcement, which came from Chairman Boris Jerkunica.
Jerkunica also introduced the club’s next offseason initiative, a logo design contest. Going along with the fan-friendly theme of the offseason, the club will accept logo design entries from fans over the course of the next two weeks. The entries will be posted on the club’s Facebook page, and at the end of the two-week period, the logo with the most “likes” will move on to a final round.
In the final round, the most popular fan logo will be pitted against the team’s current logo and a logo that the club will have designed in the coming weeks. Full contest rules and details will be posted to the club’s website, atlantasilverbacks.com, by noon on Friday.
Following up an impressive run on the field at the tail end of the 2012 NASL season, the Silverbacks are experiencing success off the field as well. The club is already very close to reaching last year’s season ticket and sponsorship totals, meaning the Silverbacks are off to an encouraging start as they prepare for the 2013 season.

Silverbacks will stay the Silverbacks

The Silverbacks’ new name will be … the Silverbacks.
After the Atlanta soccer franchise held a contest in which fans could vote on the team’s new name, Silverbacks prevailed over Chiefs, the nickname of the city’s first team, and Atlanta FC. More than 5,000 votes were cast, with the Silverbacks winning in what was described as a close margin.
The new name was unveiled at a party Thursday night.
While the name will remain the same, the team’s logo may change. For the next two weeks, fans can design and submit their own logo through the team’s facebook page. The logo that receives the most “likes” will compete against a logo that the Silverbacks are having designed, as well as the current logo. Those three will be posted on the Silverbacks website where fans can vote to decide the winner, which will be announced in January.

The past week has been a big one for soccer in the U.S. Not only is Major League Soccer in the throes of its playoff race, but also the U.S. learned its schedule for the final round of World Cup qualifying for the 2014 tournament in Brazil. Major League Soccer The U.S.`s top league is at the semi-final stage of its playoff races and there have been some big surprises. Not only did both Houston Dynamo and L.A. Galaxy knock off the top seeds (Kansas City and San Jose, respectively) in the quarter final rounds, but both clubs took commanding leads in their semi-final rounds as well. In the Western Conference, defending champions, Galaxy, who halfway through the league season looked as if they wouldn`t even make the playoffs, continued their strong run with a 3-0 win over Seattle Sounders in the first leg of the home-and-home series. Irishman, Robbie Keane scored a brace for the Galaxy, while Mike Magee added the other goal. In the Eastern Conference, the Dynamo, who lost to the Galaxy in last year`s championship game, beat D.C United 3-1 in their first-leg game. Andre Hainault, Will Bruin and Kofi Sarkodie scored the Houston goals. Though both Houston and L.A. have to play the second game on their opponents` home field, anything short of a total collapse will likely see the pair through to meet in a repeat of last year`s championship game. World Cup While MLS is in the process of wrapping up its season, the U.S. has just learned the dates of its final World Cup qualifying games. The draw did the U.S. no favors, giving the team three of its first four games on the road, including a March 26 clash at Mexico. The U.S. will start qualifying on Feb. 6 at Honduras. In other national team news, coach Jurgen Klinsmann named his 20-man roster for the upcoming friendly with Russia and there were some surprises. Among those named for the roster were Jozy Altidore and Timmy Chandler. Altidore, a striker, has been on the outs with Klinsmann due to his poor performances with the national team. He was not named for the roster with recent friendlies. However, Altidore`s form in the Dutch Eredivisie has been hard to ignore. So far this season, he is the second-leading scorer in the league with nine goals and has scored 12 goals overall in 15 games in all competitions. Chandler has been on the outs due to his reticence to commit to the U.S. national team over Germany, with whom he also qualifies to play. However, it appears he is pledging his allegiance to the U.S. now. Notable absences from the largely European-based squad are Tottenham`s Clint Dempsey and Steve Cherundulo, who plays in the German Bundesliga. These are solid, established starters, however and their absence is likely due to Klinsmann`s desire to evaluate other players. Silverbacks to Announce New Team Name

The future name of Atlanta’s pro soccer team to be announced at Nov. 15 party in downtown Atlanta.
The U.S. presidential election wasn’t the only thing being decided late Tuesday. Voting for the future name of Atlanta’s professional soccer team also closed, bringing a conclusion to the Atlanta Silverbacks’ two-month-long "Decision 2012" campaign.
While the verdict is in regarding the future name of the city’s only professional soccer team, the community will have to wait a week to find out the campaign’s results. The team will host a party to unveil the name on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock CafĂ© in downtown Atlanta, and every single person that placed their vote over the course of the last two months will be invited. Silverbacks team advisor and FOX Soccer TV analyst Eric Wynalda will serve as the event’s emcee.
“We’re tremendously excited to announce the campaign results at the party next week,” said Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith. “It is a huge announcement for our organization and the city as a whole, and we can’t wait to share it with all of the people that took the time to vote on the campaign.”
The campaign, which kicked off just before the team finished their 2012 season in September, gave the community the opportunity to select one of four options: keep the current Silverbacks name; bring back the name of the city’s first ever professional soccer team, the Atlanta Chiefs; switch to a more European-style name, Atlanta FC; or write in a name of their own choosing.
The Silverbacks organization received thousands of votes from people all over the city and beyond, both online and at a series of polling events held across metro Atlanta. Local and national celebrities even weighed in on the campaign - people like The Bert Show host Bert Weiss, former U.S. National Team star Brian McBride and TV personality Erin Andrews.
The Silverbacks, second in the North American Soccer League in 2012 attendance, will now look to continue the momentum gained from the “Decision 2012” campaign by announcing another exciting offseason initiative at next week’s party. Smith offered a slight hint as to what kind of initiative that might be.
“I think it has become pretty clear that fans appreciate having a say in the decision-making of their favorite sports teams, so as a community-oriented franchise, that is exactly what we’re going to give them,” Smith said. “In regards to the next phase of our offseason, let’s just say that there are a number of elements that go into a strong sports brand, and at the party we’re going to announce yet another way for the fans to help us develop our brand.”
The unveiling party will feature special guests, drink specials and plenty of giveaways including a trip for two to New York City. One lucky voter, along with a guest, will travel with the team in 2013 when they go on the road to play against the New York Cosmos.
Voters will receive invitations to the event via email, and will be able to RSVP through the team’s website.

Atlanta Fire United College Prep Program Schedule Announced!
Phase 1: Wednesday, November 14th - 7 PM
Due to large numbers and demand, a second phase 1 meeting has been set for November 14th!!!
Join us to discuss the college process and what high school soccer players need to be doing to get recruited. We have separated our Atlanta Fire United Soccer Association College Prep program into three phases this year:
Phase 1: November 14th Meeting - To cover the early and middle stages of the processing including the targeting of the schools, communication with the coaches and the marketing of the player.
Phase 2: January 2013 Meeting - A grouping of College Coaches from various Universities/Colleges will be presenting to the group and will be answering questions. Will also have some current AFUSA alumni who are currently playing/attending college speak and answer questions from the attending players/families.
Phase 3: April 2013 College ID Camps - Will conduct College ID Camps where players will train with and play in front of a selected group of University/College coaches. This will give a more hands on approach with the players and coaches and better familiarize these coaches with our players in a training/playing environment.
The AFUSA College Prep Meetings are open to all AFUSA membership but are targeted at our U15 - U17 AFUSA athletes and family members. This will be a great opportunity to become more knowledgeable of the recruitment process and familiarize yourself with the steps needed to be taken to push the process forward.

NASL Announces Virginia Team to Begin Play in 2014
Posted on Mon, Nov 5, 2012

ASHBURN, VA – November 5, 2012 – Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional sports and entertainment options to Northern Virginia, VIP Sports & Entertainment announces that it is partnering with Loudoun Professional Soccer, LLC (LPS), who have been awarded a franchise in the North American Soccer League (NASL).  The franchise will debut in 2014 playing its home games at the future Ballpark located at One Loudoun in Ashburn, VA.
“The NASL has a long and glorious tradition as a quality professional league and we are proud to join them in 2014,” said Bob Farren, Chairman & Founder of VIP Sports & Entertainment. “We believe the addition of professional soccer significantly enhances the entertainment options we can offer our fans and we are extraordinarily happy to welcome the NASL to Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. region.”
Accompanying this announcement is the launch of a Name The Team contest to have our fans determine the name of the franchise.  Fans are encouraged to submit names for their new soccer team at NASLvirginia.com, presented by Edelman Financial Services, Buffalo Wing Factory & Pub, Mountcastle Plastic Surgery and Sonak Family Chiropractic.
“The NASL is delighted to add Virginia to the league as our 11th team, beginning play in 2014,” said Commissioner David Downs.  “Over the past year we have gotten to know the owners and management group here quite well, and share their strong belief that this team will be successful in every sense of the word in this rapidly growing and vibrant community in Northern Virginia.”
LPS President Joe Travez added his thoughts on the world’s game: “We will work with NASL and its partner Traffic Sports, headquartered in Brazil, to bring the global game home to Loudoun County through various international matches. It is an exciting opportunity to expand Virginia’s role in the world sports market.”
Farren noted, “The opportunity to expand the lineup of professional sports in Loudoun County and Northern Virginia with the quality of an NASL franchise is a tremendous compliment to our plans at the Ballpark. We all look forward to tapping into the power of the youth soccer network of the DC Region and finding fans all across the region to be a part of the future success of this team.”
Among the goals of VIP’s soccer franchise will be the development of an academy system, formed by teaming up with several established youth soccer clubs including Loudoun Soccer, the largest club of its kind in Virginia.  Former DC United Goalkeeper and Coach Mark Simpson will be the club’s Director of Soccer Operations.

8th-seeded GSU women claim SoCon crown
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. — Georgia Southern capped of a historic Southern Conference Tournament run on Sunday afternoon by clinching the Eagles’ first league title and a trip to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The eighth-seeded Eagles won the league title in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4, over third-seeded Furman after the match was drawn, 0-0. Sydnie Van Curen netted the winning spot kick after 110 minutes of scoreless regulation and overtime play.
In the penalty shootout the first three kick takers made their attempts to make it 3-3 through as many rounds. McKenna Storey missed her attempt as did Furman in the fourth round. Zoe Van Gorder took Georgia Southern’s fifth attempt and made her penalty, as did Furman to send the match to a sixth round. Cori Dulmage had her attempt saved, but a miss by Furman in that round gave Van Curen a shot. She converted her attempt, while a miss off the crossbar by Furman gave the Eagles their first SoCon Championship in program history.
The Eagles (10-7-5) became the first eighth-seeded team to reach the SoCon Tournament Final in league history. The previous low seed to reach the final was Davidson in 2009, reaching the final as the fourth seed in the four-team tournament.
Knee injury to sideline Georgia’s WR Brown
ATLANTA — Georgia receiver Marlon Brown, who is tied for the team lead in catches, will miss the remainder of the season after hurting his left knee in Saturday night’s win over Mississippi.
Coach Mark Richt said Sunday Brown tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. The injury will end the senior’s college career.
Brown and another senior, Tavarres King, share the lead with 27 catches. Brown has four touchdown catches.
The injury comes one month after another top receiver, Michael Bennett, hurt his right knee in practice, ending his season.
Brown had three catches for 113 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, in Georgia’s 37-10 win over Ole Miss.
Richt says Rhett McGowan and Justin Scott-Wesley could see more playing time behind King, Malcolm Mitchell, Rantavious Wooten and Chris Conley.
