Want more tips on how to communicate effectively with your players? Learn about coaching by attending one of our coaching courses this winter! Georgia Soccer conducts many courses for all levels of play, from U-4 recreational to U-19 Elite players and everything in between. It is also mandatory to have a coaching license to coach youth soccer in Georgia. Courses are offered throughout the state during the months of July and August. Your club might be hosting some of them.
As a service to Georgia Soccer memebers, the G, F, and Recreational E courses are FREE to all Georgia Soccer members. It has never been a better time to get your youth soccer coaching career started!
Starting in summer 2013, there are two ways a candidate can take the ‘G’ course:
1. The ‘G’ course can be taken in the traditional way by attending the 4 hour course (the traditional ‘G’ course starts with a two hour classroom theory session and followed by a two hour field session).
2. Or, candidates can do the theory portion of the course online and complete the course by attending the 2 hour field session portion of a traditional ‘G’ course.

New season. New faces. But familiar problems still plague Minnesota United FC.
United kicked off the fall portion of the North American Soccer League season with a 1-0 loss to spring-season champion Atlanta on Saturday at the National Sports Center in Blaine. An announced crowd of 5,884 saw the home team fall behind in the first half and fail to convert several chances for the equalizer. Atlanta, which clinched the spring-season championship with a 3-0 victory in Blaine last month, dug in for a greater challenge in the rematch.
“The first thing that we told the guys is, ‘It doesn’t have to be pretty. We are not here to entertain the fans; that is their job,’ ” Atlanta Silverbacks coach Brian Haynes said.
Haynes got his wish as the Silverbacks scored first. Mike Randolph beat goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel in the 22nd minute not long after a corner kick, a sign United’s problems defending set pieces have not been solved.
“We worked so hard this week to be solid,” United coach Manny Lagos said. “The reality is, we still have to figure out a way to not have that stress happen during a game.”
Lagos did see improvement from the midfield. Calum Mallace and Sinisa Ubiarparipovic, midfielders on loan from Montreal of Major League Soccer, each showed an ability to react fast in tight spots and advance the ball.
Both Mallace and Ubiarparipovic can be recalled to Montreal by Aug. 8, but if either is still with United on that date, they will remain so for the rest of the fall season. Forward Pablo Campos hopes to have them for the long haul.
“They are talented players that can hold the ball and give the right pass,” he said.
Said Lagos: “There was creativity, production and imagination that we haven’t had in a while.”
Ubiarparipovic started Minnesota’s best scoring chance of the first half with deft footwork to maintain possession before passing to Miguel Ibarra. The ball next went wide to Brian Kallman, who booted it toward the Atlanta goal where Campos just missed heading past diving Silverbacks goalkeeper Joe Nasco.
Minnesota applied additional pressure throughout the final 15 minutes.
“It wasn’t an easy to game to win,” Haynes said.
Kallman wore the captain’s armband. He drew a straight red card and got ejected just before the end of regulation and could face further discipline from the NASL.

Merited or not, Atlanta sports fans have a reputation for fair-weather flightiness. Followers of the city’s big-league teams would do well to take a lesson from supporters of our lesser-known pro team, the Atlanta Silverbacks. In a city dogged by national derision for its lack of spirit, these soccer aficionados are a standout exception.
In the spirit of European football clubs, the Atlanta Ultras (aka Ultras 101) light flares and smoke bombs when the Silverbacks score, take heckling to the boundaries of vulgarity, and generally cause as much ruckus as they can without getting kicked out of Silverbacks Park. “We’re not just there to watch a soccer game,” says Steve Gurlen, founder and president. “We’re there to show what the team, the club, and our city mean to us. This is our house, and we’re going to protect this house no matter what.”
With membership dating back to 1996, the Westside 109 epitomizes undying dedication, especially to a team that doesn’t often get its name in the paper. Under the lead of founder Kurt Braunsroth, the club forms an unofficial drumline that’s known to follow the team to away games.
Despite their pugnacious nickname and “East Atlanta/Little Five Points tattooed look,” the Eastside 309 Guerrillas have a slightly mellower vibe, says Silverbacks spokesman Neal Malone, stressing that the groups have more in common than not: “After we win, they all celebrate.”

Cameron, Rutkowski Join Mercer Men’s Soccer Coaching Staff
MACON, Georgia (MERCER ATHLETICS) - Mercer men's soccer head coach Brad Ruzzo announced the additions of Ian Cameron and Emmett Rutkowski to his coaching staff on Thursday morning, just two weeks before the start of fall camp in preparation for the upcoming 2013 season.
"I could not be more excited to bring both Ian and Emmett onto our coaching staff as we prepare for the 2013 season," Ruzzo said. "I know that they both have extensive soccer backgrounds and will be huge assets for our program both on and off the field."
In terms of on-field development, Cameron will be working primarily with the squad's attacking players while Rutkowski will handle all goalkeeping responsibilities.
Cameron is no stranger to Mercer, however, as he returns to Macon after a stellar playing career with the Bears from 2007-2010. Cameron appeared in 67 games with the Orange and Black and still ranks in the top-10 in program history in points (T-8th – 50), goals (T-9th – 17) and assists (T-4th – 16).
The crafty midfielder also racked up plenty of awards while playing at Mercer, earning a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team selection, an Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team selection and an A-Sun Championship All-Tournament Team nomination.
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Cameron graduated from Mercer in 2010 with a double major degree in Finance/Economics and earned a master's degree in quantitative finance from the University of Glasgow in 2012.
Rutkowski comes to Mercer from Dartmouth, where he served as the goalkeeper coach for the Big Green during the 2012 season. In his lone season at Dartmouth, Rutkowski guided starting goalkeeper Noah Cohen to a 9-7-0 record, a 1.30 goals against average, two shutouts and a Team MVP honor.
Prior to his stay at Dartmouth, Rutkowski spent two years as an assistant coach at Frostburg State in Maryland. During his time with the Bobcats, the team improved from 4-10-3 in his first season to 11-3-5 in the second year.
Rutkowski played his college soccer at the University of Mary Washington from 2006-2010, where he was a first-team All-Conference and All-Region goalkeeper as a senior.
After playing semi-professionally in the Premier Developmental League (PDL) with the Fredericksburg Hotspurs, Rutkowski went back to school and earned his Masters of Education from Frostburg State in the spring of 2012. Rutwokski also holds a USSF National "B" Coaching License and an NSCAA Goalkeeping "Level II" diploma.
Mercer reports for fall camp on August 11th and officially kicks off its 2013 season at ACC member Clemson on August 30.
Soccer group plans family fun carnivalSet for Saturday at Fowler Park | ||
A local soccer academy is holding a family festival this weekend.
United Futbol Academy will present its first UFA Family Fun Carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Fowler Park, 4110 Carolene Way.
UFA is a nonprofit organization established in 2010 from the merger of two neighboring soccer clubs: Forsyth Fusion and Atlanta Soccer Academy.
Between the primary Forsyth academy and satellite locations in Dawson and Lumpkin counties, the academy provides soccer instruction to about 500 children ages 3 to 18.
Saturday’s event is open to all UFA families as well as the general public.
Stacey Brustein, the organization’s events coordinator, said proceeds from the festival will go to scholarships for students who can’t afford to take part in the soccer organization.
“It will be a great family day with literally something for everyone,” she said of the carnival. “We wanted to make sure we had activities that teenagers would enjoy, as well as things for toddlers and adults so the entire family could come out and have a good time.”
According to Brustein, the events will include soccer-themed games for kids of all ages, as well as non-soccer games and activities such as inflatables, trampoline bungee jumps and “giant hamster balls.”
There will also be a dunk tank and other water activities, arts and crafts, scrimmages against UFA coaches, and raffles.
For the adults, about 30 vendors will be in attendance, as well as several metro Atlanta food trucks.
Admission to the carnival is free, but activities require tickets. Brustein said those will range from one to eight tickets each, or families can purchase wrist bands for $15 each that will provided unlimited access to most of the carnival offerings.
Brustein is anticipating at least 1,000 people. “It will be a fun day for everyone,” she said.

There was more overtime drama, this time for the U19 girls with NASA 12 Elite II (GA) beating tough SC Blues (CA-S) in overtime following a scoreless draw. NASA doubled up in the beginning of OT with consecutive goals from Caroline Waters and Kelsey Nix, and though SCB’s Jocelyn Blankenship added last minute goal for her team, it wouldn’t be enough to catch the determined NASA champ.

NASA has two teams that are competing at the USYSA National Championships to be held July 23-28 in Overland Park, Kansas. The U16 boys (B15 Elite), coached by NASA Boys Director Ray Tomlin will attend. Also competing at nationals for the third time are the U19 girls (G12 Elite II), coached by NASA Executive Director Dave Smith.

KSU’s women’s soccer team is prepared to improve on its 10-8-1 finish from a season ago.
The Owls are currently gearing up for their first exhibition game against Wofford University at the newly named Fifth Third Bank Stadium, which is scheduled to take place on Aug. 9. Head coach Rob King noted they had some success the previous year, despite finishing with a first round loss to North Florida in the Atlantic-Sun Championship Tournament. King feels that his team has a much better chance this year.
“I think we laid out the ground work for this year, with our returning players, and we brought in a lot of good players this year as well,” King said. “I think we laid the foundation and we’re ready to get started this year with a very challenging schedule.”
KSU is slated to play in two tournaments before A-Sun Conference play officially begins. The Owls will first travel to the University of Tennessee on Aug. 23, where they will match-up against Tennessee Tech and powerhouse schools like Oklahoma in the UT Vols Tournament. The Owls biggest test will then take place at the Carolina Nike Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Aug. 30, where they will face Duke, Georgia State, Mississippi, Samford, Troy, and the defending national champion North Carolina.
King noted that beginning the season with really tough opponents like North Carolina will certainly give his players a real test, and the results

“Regardless how that game goes, we take a lot of positives from that game, and it’s one that after you play the National Champions, you really have got nothing to fear with anybody else you play,” King said.
King expressed a lot of confidence in both the returning veterans and incoming freshman in a previous interview. As for the freshman newcomers, there will be eight new pairs of legs to add to KSU’s rotation. Newcomers include forwards Shannon Driscoll and Maggie Gaughan, midfielders Suzanne Arafa and Monica Herrera, flank midfielder/forward Cassidy Kemp and goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant.
Midfielder Katrina Frost will enter her junior season as the leader of the Owls offensive attack. Frost was an Atlantic Sun Conference first-teamer as a redshirt sophomore. She scored 10 goals and recorded three assists for the Owls’ offense. Midfielder Kelsey Barr returns for her senior season after making the All-A-Sun second team last year. Barr led the Owls last year in minutes played (1,175) and played in every single minute of conference play.
Danielle Grey burst onto the scene as a freshman and ended her first season with the Owls as an All-A-Sun freshman team member.
“We’ve got an outstanding group of 2013’s coming in, and what better way to start than by showing them the gold standard for women’s college soccer,” King said when referring to their matchup with North Carolina. According to King, the hard work and commitment have already been present in the offseason, and with an upcoming match against National Champion North Carolina in several weeks, that is all the motivation they need to have a successful season.
KSU opens Aug. 23 against Tennessee Tech.
