MLS Atlanta announces Darren Eales as club president

IN NEWS,PRESS RELEASE

ATLANTA, Sept 10, 2014 – MLS Atlanta today announced the appointment of Darren Eales as President of Major League Soccer’s 22nd team. He will join the club later this year, following a transition period with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC), a world-renowned English Premier League team.

A former Ivy League Player of the Year, NSCAA All-America and U.S. professional soccer player, British-born Eales currently serves as executive director at THFC. In this role, he touched on all major aspects of soccer operations, including the club’s overall soccer strategy, succession planning, player acquisitions, performance analysis, first team administration, player development, academy and medical supervision.

Eales helped to negotiate and execute all player transfers, including playing a key role in the 2013 world record transfer fee sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. He was closely involved in three of the top six transfers involving MLS players (Robbie Keane, Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe) and recently helped to complete negotiations for the transfer of United States Men’s National Team and Seattle Sounders player DeAndre Yedlin to THFC. During Eales’ four-year tenure with THFC, the team qualified for European competition every season, reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in 2011, and reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League in 2013.

“Soccer is a lifetime passion of mine, and to have the chance to come to Atlanta and build a club from the ground up is extremely exciting,” said Eales. “I’m going to have the rare experience of getting to know the fans from the outset, and I’m eager to engage them in the process, from naming the team to creating an incredible atmosphere at our matches. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to have the support of a respected owner in Arthur Blank and the chance to field a team in a brand new state-of-the-art facility. MLS is going from strength to strength, and really making its mark, so it’s a privilege to be part of its expansion. I’m looking forward to being a part of MLS Atlanta and helping to make this a great success story.”

Since Atlanta was awarded Major League Soccer’s 22nd team in April, excitement for the club’s arrival has been overwhelming. MLS Atlanta has already set records in fan participation, with more than 5,300 fans signed up for the Founders Club season ticket program resulting in over 15,500 seats reserved. With half of the new Atlanta stadium already filled, MLS Atlanta Owner Arthur Blank recently challenged soccer fans to fill the remaining 11,000 seats by the end of the year.

“We couldn’t be happier with Darren’s decision to join us as president of MLS Atlanta,” said club Owner Arthur Blank. “He brings a unique depth of experience to our organization, having played in the U.S. professionally and given his dealings with MLS as a club executive and legal counsel in the Premier League. His credentials speak for themselves; he knows how to lead a first-class organization and build a winning team.”

A barrister specializing in sports law, Eales has legal experience in a variety of areas from intellectual property and employment to contractual issues and dispute resolution. While at THFC, he served on numerous high-profile soccer governing bodies and panels across Europe and within England.

Prior to joining THFC in 2010, Eales served as in-house legal counsel, director and club secretary at West Bromwich Albion Football Club (WBA) for four years. WBA is recognized within the Premier League as a well-run and financially stable club. Eales also has extensive experience in new facility development and community involvement, having participated in the final planning stages for THFC’s state-of-the-art training ground, which opened in 2012. In his role as director, Eales sat on the Technical Board of THFC’s Academy, a leading developer of youth talent, which produced five full international players between 2012 and 2014. At WBA he served as chairman of the ground-breaking Sporting Club Albion, a multi-sport community club concept, incorporating both women’s and disability teams.

Raised by his father as a Chesterfield FC fan, Eales has been immersed in soccer all his life. After playing in the Academy at Cambridge United FC in England, he moved to the US on a soccer scholarship, spending one year at West Virginia University before transferring to Brown University. At Brown he went on to become Ivy League Player of the Year, NSCAA First-Team All-America, COSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and USA Today Student Athlete of the Year, before graduating with a degree in economics. In 2012, he was inducted into the Brown University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Following his university play, Eales remained in the US, playing for the Hampton Roads Mariners and Hershey Wildcats in the USISL, and the New York Centaurs in the A-League. When injuries cut short his professional playing career, he returned to England and earned an MA in Law at Cambridge University. In 2000 he qualified as a barrister, and then spent six years practicing law at 2 Temple Gardens Chambers in London, where he is still a door tenant.

Eales will be joined in Atlanta by his wife, Faith, and twins due to arrive in early 2015. His media availability will be determined in the coming weeks.

Georgia soccer moves into national rankings

For the first time this season, the Georgia soccer team has entered the Soccer America poll at No. 25 in the country.

Gaining the national ranking caps off a huge weekend for Georgia (4-1-1, 0-0-1 Southeastern Conference).

Sophomore midfielder Gabby Seiler set a new record for most consecutive games with a score (five) in last Friday’s 4-0 win over Houston, while three other players scored their first career goals. The Bulldogs’ 1-0 defeat of No. 17 UCF was their biggest victory since knocking off then-No. 17 South Carolina a year ago.

Louise Hogrell, Georgia’s freshman goalkeeper, was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after securing those two shutouts.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a home matchup against Mercer at 7 p.m. Friday night. They will then travel to Furman for a 6 p.m. game Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.​

North Georgia women's soccer caps strong opening weekend

DAHLONEGA -- The University of North Georgia women's soccer team (2-0-0) capped off their opening weekend with an impressive 4-1 victory over Lees-McRae College (0-1-0) Sunday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.

After a 55-minute lightning delay just before kickoff, the Nighthawks got on the board first with junior Cicely Taliaferro scoring her second goal of the season in just the 14th minute of play on a ball from senior Megan Morrow. The Bobcats quickly answered though with Mikaela Renfro scoring the equalizer in the 18th minute.

North Georgia pulled away in the closing minutes of the first half. Freshman Jessi Vaverka scored her first career goal for the Blue and Gold on a well executed cross from junior Jordan Draughon in the 33rd minute.

Less than five minutes later, Taliaferro and Morrow hooked up again off a free kick to give UNG a two-goal advantage heading into the half.

The Nighthawks threatened to add a fourth goal on numerous attempts through out the second half and finally broke through in the 88th minute with sophomore Jessica Dacey pushing her first goal of the season through the upper right corner to give UNG the 4-1 lead that proved final.

North Georgia will hit the road for the first time this weekend, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens University, with kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

For the first time this season, the Georgia women’s soccer team scored more than three goals, the first of which will enter the program’s record book, in a 4-0 victory over Houston Friday night.

Sophomore midfielder Gabby Seiler kicked in her fifth goal of the season, extending her scoring streak to five games -- the longest in Georgia history. Ironically, Seiler took a pass from the previous record holder, sophomore midfielder Marion Crowder (four games), en route to the score.

“I honestly don’t even think I knew [about the record at the time],” Seiler said. “It was a great ball by Marion -- I wouldn’t have scored that goal without Marion…I’m humbled by it, but I’m also so thankful that I have people who get me the ball.”

Seiler’s goal was Georgia’s (2-1-1, 0-0-1 Southeastern Conference) first of the night, and came at the 26-minute mark. Since the Bulldogs held the Cougars (1-1-1) scoreless, it was recorded as a game-winner, Seiler’s second this year.

Georgia head coach Steve Holeman said Seiler has always been a good player, but now she is becoming more well-rounded.

“Gabby’s a team player,” Holeman said. “She creates so many chances for her teammates, and now she’s being productive in front of goal. That was one of her areas of focus in the off season, and now it’s all coming to fruition.”

After Seiler’s record-breaker, three Bulldogs scored their first career goals.

Sophomore forward Lauren Tanner scored later in the first half, and then Kelsey Killean and Taylor Donohue put the Cougars away in the second half.

Tanner said afterwards that her confidence has been building, and something finally clicked on her scoring play.

“I’ve been coming in every now and then, like in the games and stuff this season, and I feel like every time I’ve come in, I just keep getting more and more confidence, and tonight I just kind of felt it a little bit,” Tanner said.

Holeman said those scores were a testament to his team’s depth.

“We were able to rotate a lot of players in tonight,” he said. “On a Friday night that’s extremely important when you have a game on Sunday, so it’s nice to get what we felt like was a comfortable lead and rotate players in. It just shows the depth that we have when three players can step up and finish chances.”

The 4-0 shutout is an improvement for the Bulldogs, who were coming off a road trip to California that saw them lose one of two games and surrender three goals.

“We felt like we needed to be better in our possession, better with our entry passes from our backs into our midfield, be more productive in front of goal, and I think we accomplished that tonight,” Holeman said.

Overall, the game was Georgia’s most dominant performance of the season.

Houston had only allowed 27 shots and zero goals to their previous two opponents combined, but the Bulldogs’ four goals came off 28 shot attempts.

Georgia was even better defensively, holding the Cougars to just two shot attempts the entire game.

“I think a big part of that was just our ability to keep the ball,” Holeman said. “We had most of the possession…In the times where we turned it over, we were able to win it quickly back from them and limit their chances.”

There isn’t much time for rest, though, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Central Florida Knights on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Holeman said there is work to be done in preparation for that match-up despite the convincing win Friday.

Our charities - the Calvary Children's Home and Michelle Akers Horse Rescue will be the recipients of these funds via specific "needed items".

 

As is our policy, we have asked each of the charities to provide our Charity Committee with a list of their "needs". In turn, we reviewed the lists and will provide the following:

 

To the Calvary Children's Home:

2.    One new 5'X12' utility trailer;

3.    One new TI 84 graphing calculator.

 

To Michelle Akers Horse Rescue:

Black Tie Soccer Game kicks off on Oct. 5th

Planning is well underway for our 6th Annual Black Tie Soccer Gala - Soccer in the Street's answer to formal fundraisers.  At our event the guests come comfortably dressed, and the players dress in tuxedos and fancy dresses to raise money for soccer programs.

The event is Sunday afternoon, October 5th at the Grady High School Stadium.  Come out and enjoy an afternoon of soccer fun and food.

Jurgen Klinsmann unveiled the roster for the upcoming friendly against the Czech Republic on Sept. 3 in Prague and there is one player with ties to Atlanta and another with ties that isn’t.

Cody Cropper, who has ties to Atlanta, was one of three goalkeepers called up. Cropper is playing for Southampton, though he has yet to make his Premier League debut.

Cropper started all three matches for the U.S. at the 2013 FIFA Uner-20 World Cup in Turkey. He also participated in training camp before the World Cup.He has yet to make his debut with the team. Also called in were Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando, so it may be unlikely that Cropper plays.

Two other players from metro Atlanta, goalkeeper Sean Johnson and defender Chris Klute, weren’t called up.

Klute, who played at Clayton State and with the Silverbacks, can play left or right fullback. He got a look from Klinsmann earlier this year, but hasn’t since. To be fair, he as playing a position that suddenly is very deep.

Johnson is in a similar situation. He has played for the team several times, but now faces deep competition to get even a look.

Overall, the U.S. roster has a decidedly 2018 feel, featuring 11 players with 10 caps or less and one player still in college, forward Jordan Morris.

Not included are stalwarts Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley or Matt Besler.

Too much shouldn’t be read into their omissions.

While Dempsey isn’t a lock for 2018, it would be a shock if Bradley or Besler aren’t in Russia.

This game is, as Klinsmann told U.S. Soccer, “the first step we get to look at many of our talented young players based in Europe.”

These players — John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Tim Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Julian Green (Bayern Munich) — could form the backbone of the next World Cup team.

There are also a few from Mexico on this roster: Michael Orozco (Puebla) and Joe Corona (Tijuana).

Clark’s back

Atlanta native and Houston midfielder Ricardo Clark continues to play well since recovering from a concussion that sidelined him for two months.

Not only has he stepped in and playing meaningful minutes, but he is scoring. His headed goal was the final in Friday’s 3-1 win against Sporting KC on Friday.

Clark suffered the concussion against New York on April 23. The team went 3-5-1 without him. Since he returned to playing as a sub on June 29, the Dynamo are 3-4-2, and are 3-2 in the last five games he has started.

Nasco debuts

Former Silverbacks goalie Joe Nasco made his MLS debut for Colorado in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Seattle.

Nasco was selected as one of the men of the match by mlssoccer.com.

Nasco is also a sheriff’s deputy in Clayton County, as I chronicled last year before he joined Colorado.

Wither Manchester United?

At one time, Manchester United was arguably the greatest team in the world, winners of every prestigious trophy on the field and deemed at one point by Forbes as the world’s valuable sports franchise.

Now, after a humbling 4-0 defeat to League One outfit MK Dons in last week’s Capital One Cup and a tie at Burnley over the weekend, they are less than average.

What has happened?

For starters, Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The squad’s long-time manager guided the team to 895 wins in 1,500 games, 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles and five FA Cups, among other things.

But it’s now obvious that the roster that he left for hand-picked successor David Moyes and now Louis van Gaal was short on talent.

Even after winning the Premier League during his last year (2012-13), Ferguson’s aging roster shows only a handful of players that would still be considered world class.

Perhaps the best indication of the problem would be to analyze how many of the regular starters on that squad would be considered automatic starters on other strong Premier League sides?

There are really only two: Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

The rest were either too old (Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra), too inconsistent (Nani, David de Gea, Javier Hernandez, Ashley Young) or just too vanilla (Tom Cleverly, Michael Carrick) to forge their way into squads like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City or even Tottenham (and yes, I’m aware Carrick came from the Spurs).

That Ferguson could wring a title out of that group shows just how good of a motivator, tactician and strategist he was.

But it also shows that Moyes’ failure last year to survive even one year on the Old Trafford sideline may not have been entirely his fault.

There’s just not enough talent.

Massive funds were wasted by Ferguson on players that haven’t worked or are no longer on the squad: Shinji Kagawa, Wilfried Zaha, Nick Powell, Bebe and Dimitar Berbatov, among others.

Many like to blame the team’s owners, the Glazers, for the squad’s issues. That would be true, except for the fact that Ferguson was allowed to spend money…lots of it. Ferguson was the league’s fourth-highest spender on transfers during the 2011-12 season and spent another 50 million pounds during the 2012-13 season

Now, the team is being forced to overspend to bring in talent, as evidenced by the record kitty paid for winger Angel di Maria, a fine player but just a brick in the immense red wall that must be rebuilt.
