ATLANTA, Ga., (October 19, 2011) - The Georgia State men’s soccer team fought back from a two-goal deficit with two goals in the final four minutes, but couldn’t push one across in overtime and fell 3-2 at No. 11 Old Dominion Wednesday night.

Sophomore Stephen McGill scored GSU’s first goal in the 86th minute after being awarded a penalty kick. McGill fired the ball into the upper-right part of the net for his third goal of the season, all on penalty kicks. GSU (10-4-1, 4-3) hasn’t scored three penalty kick goals in a season since Paul Schwak did in 2004.

Redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin knotted the game at two after sophomore Michael Nwiloh threw in a ball from the right side that was flicked on by McGill. Lumpkin met the ball with his head and directed it into the right side of the net to tie the game in the 88th minute.

Georgia State now sits in a tie with VCU for fifth place in the CAA standings after the Rams beat UNC Wilmington 1-0 on Wednesday night. The Panthers now return home for senior day this Sunday to take on James Madison (2 p.m.), who beat William & Mary 1-0 on Wednesday night and are tied with Old Dominion for first in the CAA.

Junior Vincent Foermer made seven saves, several of the diving variety, in the losing effort.

ODU (10-2, 6-1) sophomore Tim Hopkinson scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute after classmate Gideon Asante centered a ball that nearly went out for a goal kick. Asante saved it off the line and Hopkinson buried it past a diving Foermer for the victory.

Georgia State started strong in the match with Lumpkin putting the first shot of the match on net. GSU controlled possession for a majority of the first 10 minutes, but the Monarchs turned up the pressure from that point on. The Panthers conceded a goal in the 30th minute when the nation’s second-leading scorer junior Yannick Smith struck on a feed from freshman forward Ivan Militar. The Monarchs preserved the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Asante added to the lead when he took a long clear from junior Alex De John and beat Foermer one-on-one in the 79th minute.

Old Dominion held the slight advantage in shots at 14-12 while the Panthers edged the Monarchs in corner kicks at 5-3. The win was Old Dominion’s sixth-consecutive victory.

Recently, a question was asked to American Coaches: Why do many youth soccer players in America decide to stop playing soccer as they get older? Below are some interesting responses.

" In the U.S. there are so many main stream sports that kids naturally get drawn to. With the athletic skill set they gain playing soccer, they find the transition easy. Also, we are also dealing with a generation of kids whose parents probably didnt play soccer so they probably unknowingly point their kids to a sport which they are familiar with. Until soccer becomes as big of a cultural fixture in the US as it is in other countries this migration will continue to happen."

" In my 15 years of coaching, I find that many organizations (and I have coached in NJ, GA and VA) do not link their recreational and select programs. The select programs are usually coached by professionals and recreational programs usually are coached by volunteer parents. The technical advantage that the select players are given provides a better opportunity for them to stay in the sport. Think of it this way (you have 4 U-12 teams at 10 players per team which is 40 kids in a recreational program.) You have 2 select teams at the same age bracket for another 20 kids. Thats 60 kids that will be trying out for a JV high school team in a few years as majority of schools down south don't have freshman high school soccer. So, a roster of 24 players, not including returning players need to pick from those 60 kids, the rest go unto other sports. Besides, by U-12 majority of the kids are not technically advanced enough to continue in soccer unless its at the recreational level. Many organizations due not spend enough time teaching player development to all players, its mainly focused on the players on select or academy teams (at a higher cost to the parents). In addition, I believe that majority of coaches, at all youth levels, do not teach the kids to be creative nor due enough to prevent parent interaction during a game. Too often, I hear parents yell "shoot, pass, dribble, etc." to the players on a team. The parents are doing a disservice to all the players on the field by not giving them an opportunity to think and create solutions for themselves. This comes from the parent's drive to "win" rather then focus on player development. I have watched through the years, as coaches are more concerned with a kid passing then being creative and feeling comfortable taking a defender on 1 v 1. The kids are just not technically skilled enough to continue and the game itself has turned into a "money making event" for their organizations. Its not about keeping the most talented, its about keeping the players who can afford to play. I believe lack of playing and practice time for the kids is an issue as well."

" With the increase in club travel the players have more pressure put on them. Players at a very young age are pushed to excell by coaches that only want to train at practice instead of throwing out a ball and letting the game be the teacher. The parents are paying a lot of money for a player to be a technically skilled player, thus adding more pressure on being successful. There's more to coaching than teaching the technical and tactical side of the game. The love of the game gets lost.

Not saying this is totally wrong, but the fun has been taken out of playing, the players lose their passion for the game."

"a great question and a problem that is not limited to the US only. I believe that in most countries around the world there are a number of factors that take the enjoyment out of the game for young players: 1. Playing competitive soccer too young, with all the pressure from parents and coaches, 2. Thre pressure of having to win as against having time to develop which results in other associated ailments; a. Playing "big boys" football, where only the biggest kids are picked and little guys get very limited time on the pitch. b. the style of football, the long ball or kick and rush football which negates all creative and intelligent play. 3. The games themselves are too complicated, i.e. 7 year olds playing in games like 7v7 and kids as young as 11 years of age playing 11v11. Since kids are not ready physically, mentally and emotionally for these more adult-oriented games, they make many mistakes which brings criticism from the adults, plus the internal pressure of not succeeding which is very damaging to kids. 4. The style of coaching. The old school of shouting instructions at kids and making them do boring drills and exercises will not produce creative, intelligent, confident players who enjoy the game.
We suggest a development model that has 1. Less competitive game structures, 2. Small-sided, age appropriate games for training and competitive play and 3. A coaching style where coaches guide the education of the younsters rather than shout instructions at them.
Such a model can help develop the full potential of the kids and their long-term enjoyment of the game.

"Everyone has brought excellent points! One thing I have noticed, is the shift of interest as the kids become teenagers and young adults, is the introduction to work and earning money. This new freedom, with a new income, as they enter the work force with summer jobs becomes the priority. Is it a failure of the sport to retain the interest of the players as they age, as many of you have expressed so well, or is it just a change of priority with growth? An other point I would like to bring is the failure of the sport to provide a tangible goal or incentive to keep playing at a competitive level as the players get older. I don't see to many kids dreaming of becoming pro soccer players, like I see kids dreaming of playing in the NHL... I live in New Brunswick, Canada - some of the kids in our communities have made as pro-hockey players, reaching the NHL; another made it, as a baseball pitcher, to the MLB, but none have made it to the MLS or any other pro soccer leagues. The lack of role models to emulate, the lack of a future in the sport can perhaps account for the drop of interest, in part. Many a time, soccer is practice during the summer to stay in shape to play hockey in the winter... Perhaps the beautiful game needs to reach the players deeper to make them dream of becoming the next big name! The media plays a trmendous part - soccer has to reach the same notoriety as football, baseball, hockey and basketball. We have to make the kids dream of soccer - create a desire and a passion that will grow with the kid and change into a genuine love for the game so they will continue to play, even as adults."

ity to win the derby and the league. Team Weaux manager, Weaux, masquerades as a loyal ATT technology executive by day but at night he applies his trade as a striker for Rovers. His latest heroes are Manchester City, David Silva and Manager Mancini. Weaux believes that Mancini is to Silva what the Special One was to Drogba. His proof was evidenced in a recent quote by Silva.

Silva said: “But first and foremost I am even more grateful for the faith he has shown in me since I signed for the club. It is always very difficult when you are changing countries, changing leagues, changing style of football.”
While most in Atlanta have been focusing on Weaux’s league leading performance, others have been stealing the limelight. Marietta Liverpool manager, Franklin Young has been heard about town exalting himself for his rise to second place. A FIFA official with knowledge of the decision says Fox has won the U.S. television rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Fox was awarded the English-language rights and Telemundo the Spanish-language rights.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the decision hasn't been announced.

ESPN and Univision lost out after holding rights to the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

The value of the new deals was not disclosed. ESPN and Univision paid a combined $425 million for the existing deal.

Soccer's governing body made the decision after U.S. networks submitted bids Wednesday and Thursday.

Are you ready for Season #3? We Are!

After a challenging sophomore season in which the 3v3 World Futbol Tour improved its overall quality of play, expanded into Alabama and hosted (3) teams from Mexico in the WFT World Cup II, we are looking forward to our third season. Good news for the U6 and U7 divisions, there will be no festival style play this year. However, a couple of rules changes and new conduct policies will help players be more creative and allow for a more positive and nurturing environment.

We have made it easier for all teams to participate in their State 3v3 Champions Cups by only having to enter (1) WFT event to become eligible to enter. We have also simplified field sizes: U6-U12 (20 x 30yds) and U13-HS (25 x 35yds). Goal sizes may vary some depending on the host clubs.

The World Futbol Tour is also making a commitment to adult soccer players by launching a separate 6v6 Tour this winter season. Most WFT events will include both tours, but there will be some solo 3v3 and 6v6 tournaments.

The WFT will focus on growing our existing events while expanding into a couple of new states in 2012.

The season kicks off on December 10 in NC and SC. Let's get started!

ALEJANDRO Bedoya grew up next door to Eddie Murphy and is already planning on Trading Places with the Rangers bench for a run in Ally McCoist's first team.
The USA winger may have been only a bit-part player to date since arriving in a cut-price deal from Swedish side Orebro in August.
He has played just four times but it is injury and illness, not a lack of desire, that has cost him the chance of making a greater impact at the SPL champs.
Bedoya, 24, grew up surrounded by astonishing wealth and privilege in the salubrious neighbourhood of Englewood, New Jersey.
Its residents include singers Tony Bennett and George Benson, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and former teen pin-up David Cassidy. Posh? Even their Salvation Army band boasts a string quartet and garden bird baths have jacuzzis.
Murphy lived on one side of his home and the head of the US tax service on the other. No, Bedoya hasn't passed his neighbour's number to Craig Whyte for some financial advice.
However, as the child of Colombian immigrants Adriano and Julieta, none of the trappings of wealth belonged to Bedoya.
Nevertheless, the work ethic instilled in him by his parents has been a motivating factor throughout his young life.
Today, his success is eclipsed only by his father, who arrived in the States in 1981 on a soccer scholarship and is now employed as director of sales and marketing for Fuji Film in Latin America.
Bedoya said: "I was born in Englewood, which is part of Bergen County in north New Jersey, and it's a very affluent area.
"My parents arrived from Colombia as my dad won a soccer scholarship at Fairleigh Dickinson University nearby and my mom worked as a maid for an older couple who were really rather wealthy.
"They got to the age and the point where they actually invited our family to live in the house and take over the mansion, so to speak, in almost like a caretaker capacity.
"Eddie Murphy lived next door and the head of the IRS lived on the other side. John Travolta studied nearby at Dwight Morrow High School. It was interesting, pretty cool and really kinda crazy.
"My parents couldn't even speak English when they first arrived in the States and yet found this great family who looked after them. It was a very lucky thing to happen. I owe so much to my parents. My father, for example, picked up a serious injury but still remained committed to his studies.
"He came from nothing in Colombia yet was always a bright person, a great student.
"He learned English so fast he became a professor of mathematics at Fairleigh Dickinson as a side job, which was remarkable. He worked for Canon for 25 years and is now employed by Fuji Film.
"He encouraged us and reminded us about the importance of hard work and how far it can take you.
"He has worked so hard to get to the top in business. However, I'm doing what he wished he could on the football field and that's great."
Bedoya, who was originally due to move to Rangers on a free in January 2012, gave a stirring performance in an admittedly low-key friendly against Liverpool on Tuesday that hinted at what he has to offer from the middle of the park.
He has asked Rangers fans only for a little patience, understanding and tolerance as he bids to adjust to life with the SPL champs after two years with Orebro.
Bedoya said: "Glasgow feels like New York City compared with Orebro. My team in Sweden were struggling but Rangers are a much bigger club and I want to be part of that winning tradition in terms of lifting titles.
"Unfortunately, since I arrived in Glasgow I've been battered with injury and illness but patience is the key.
"In the short term I want to break into the side and become part of the squad every week. The fans may not know or look into it as much as I do but my season started in Sweden back in January so it has already been a long year. However, I've looked sharp in training and want to be a key player.
"Not being in Europe at this stage of the season is a blow but I would still love to play against the biggest clubs in the Champions League."
Bedoya won his first cap in January last year against Honduras and earned his first start against Brazil in August that year.
He was part of the squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the summer and wants to persuade new coach Jurgen Klinsmann he is part of his long-term plans.
Unsurprisingly, given the player's background, he will not lack for effort in his desire to make the grade for club and country.
Bedoya said: "One of my greatest attributes on a football field is hard work. Even when I was young my stamina and endurance were good. It's hard work that has brought me to where I am now."

"When we entered the restaurant, we were immediately greeted and seated. The same lady that seated us waited on us. She took the time to explain the restaurant's concept and quickly got our drinks. We helped ourselves to the salad bar (which also had vegetables and soups). It wasn't long after we "flipped our card" to signal the Gaucho we were ready for our main course when he arrived at our table with our first of about twelve choices.
The pork loin was AMAZING, It is perfectly seasoned and cooked. The choices for meat are endless, so only take a small slice of each if you plan on trying all twelve or so choices.

It averages about $30 per person with drink for dinner. The quality, variety, and amount of food you get makes the price well worth it.
I asked our waitress if they served duck as one of their meats, and a gentleman came out and spoke to us and stated they might begin carrying it and said he would email us if he did. (I'm not sure if he was the owner or manager, but was very nice.) Everyone was very courteous and helpful.. Can't wait to go back!!"
