Arthur Blank Solicits Questions & Comments on New Stadium

NFL and possible MLS franchise owner Arthur Blank has created a website to serve as an information hub regarding the proposed downtown Atlanta stadium that is on the cusp of being approved for funding.  The website, www.newatlantastadium.com, features this page asking for questions and comments.  Blank has publicly stated that the stadium may possibly house an MLS franchise.

According to this Atlanta Journal & Constitution article, the design RFQ specifies field dimensions that meet FIFA standards for international play and the possible inclusion of MLS administrative offices.  In addition, Blank has hired former Columbus Crew President & General Manager Jim Smith as a Senior V.P.  And this recent article on MLSSoccer.com states that Atlanta MLS expansion possibilities could be unlocked if the new stadium plan comes to fruition.  Public funds for the stadium will come from extending an already existing hotel visitor tax, which is paid by hotel guests.  The remainding majority of funds will come from Mr. Blank's organization.

As mentioned above, Blank has stated that this stadium could "possibly" house an MLS club.  Now is the time for Atlanta's soccer community to let him know that we would like the stadium to "definitely" house an MLS club.  Click here and voice your support for MLS in the ATL.

    Silverbacks Issue Challenge To Ultras
The Atlanta Ultras, the largest Atlanta Silverbacks supporters group, have an opportunity to score their own section behind the south goal if they account for 225 total season tickets for the 2013 NASL season.
The Silverbacks have been working closely with the Ultras to implement a few initiatives that will help their supporters group continue its growth. Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith believes the incentive of having their own section behind the south goal at Atlanta Silverbacks Park will be one of those key initiatives.
“Anyone who has been to a game at Atlanta Silverbacks Park has surely noticed the incredible passion that the Atlanta Ultras have for the club and for the sport of soccer here in Atlanta,” Smith said. “We’re tremendously committed to helping their supporters group grow because their success will be beneficial for everyone – the fans, the club, and the city.”
The Ultras formed in late 2011, and according to the group’s president, Steve Gurlen, there were only two founding members. Since then, the Ultras have experienced impressive growth, occupying the lower rows of section 101 during 2012 home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Going into next season, the Ultras have even bigger aspirations, says Gurlen.
“The passion for soccer in Atlanta is very real, and we’re starting to see it more and more on gamedays at Atlanta Silverbacks Park,” Gurlen said. “Our goal is to create a true soccer supporters group that can serve as a face for that passion and show the country what Atlanta soccer fans are really made of.”
The group, known for their fanatical and extremely audible support during games, has already designed and distributed its own group-specific soccer scarves, and has begun to assign leadership roles for the 2013 season. Gurlen also said that the Ultras plan on implementing a membership program that will come with a variety of benefits during the season.
Season ticket packages in their supporters section are priced at just $160. Each package includes a ticket to 16 home games and access to a variety of benefits such as discounts on team merchandise and invitations to exclusive team events.
Fans interested in joining the Ultras can contact Gurlen directly at 404-620-9502 or ultrasatlanta@gmail.com. The group also has more information on their Facebook page (facebook.com/atlantaultras) and Twitter account (@AtlantaUltras).
To purchase season tickets in the Ultras section, call the Silverbacks ticket office at 404-969-4900 and mention “Ultras” when placing the order.

Give Soccer Injuries A Penalty By Warming Up Before Games, Encourages OrthoAtlanta

OrthoAtlanta, an Atlanta-based orthopaedic team, offers soccer players advice on avoiding injuries.
NORCROSS, GA,  OrthoAtlanta, an Atlanta based orthopaedic group, encourages soccer players to kick the no stretching habit and adopt a strict warm up and cool down program to prevent soccer related injuries.
Soccer is a strenuous sport, requiring players to run almost no stop for 45 minutes per half. This constant starting and stopping momentum can be damaging to player's joints and muscles, so Atlanta orthopaedic doctors with OrthoAtlanta suggest that players adopt a strict stretching program.
"Running is already tough on the joints, add to that the starting and stopping motion in soccer, and players can find themselves in trouble," said Dr. Michael Behr, Atlanta orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoAtlanta. "It's the sudden movement from full stop to full run that can cause the players the most damage and injury."
Players should also be aware of the tackling within soccer, as these block tackle and slides can injury joints and muscles. Accidental collisions are another source of injury, state Atlanta orthopaedic doctors with OrthoAtlanta, and these collisions can be responsible for torn ligaments, sprains and joint damage.
The best prevention is a proper stretching regimen. While not all injuries can be avoided, most can be prevented by keeping muscles flexible and limber.

The money is important, but the message of hope and love sent to the family at such a critical time is powerful and life changing.

Atlanta’s MLS hope may rest on new stadium

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said Atlanta’s hopes of one day getting an expansion franchise rest on a new stadium. Talking to reporters during a “state of the league” call on Monday ahead of Saturday’s championship game between Los Angeles and Houston, Garber said he and Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who in the past expressed an interest in starting a team in Atlanta, have had several discussions recently about the league, soccer and the city.
Right now, Garber said there’s simply no place for a team to play.
“The Falcons are looking to replace the Georgia Dome, so we wouldn’t want to play there,” Garber said. “There isn’t a college facility that makes sense. We respect what the Silverbacks have done, but that facility would be too small.
“What we’ve been focused on is should the public sector and private sector in Atlanta come together and get a new facility for the Falcons, it would allow us to continue our discussions …”
Garber is watching the ongoing debate about the possibility of constructing a new billion-dollar stadium for the Falcons with interest.
The MLS has 19 teams, but doesn’t have one in the Southeast. Garber has said his can’t be a national league until it has a team in every region.
One of the holdups in Atlanta is the lack of a suitable stadium. The Georgia Dome has hosted soccer events, but natural grass was installed for those games — an expensive proposal considering MLS teams host 17 games during the regular season, as well as exhibition games and friendlies.
The proposed new stadium will be designed to accommodate soccer, regardless of whether Blank owns a possible MLS team.
MLS has no requirements for stadium size or configuration. The league has soccer-specific stadiums, including new ones in Houston ($95 million) and Kansas City ($200 million), a team that plays in an open-air NFL stadium, Seattle, and a team that plays in a stadium with a retractable roof and synthetic grass, Vancouver.
The only requirement MLS has for stadiums is that the team’s ownership controls the venue and that they have a comprehensive plan. Blank and the Falcons may satisfy that guideline because they would pay a percentage of the stadium’s cost in what is being dubbed as a public-private project. Soccer isn’t needed to make the new stadium work financially, but it would be another revenue stream.
The Falcons hope the stadium would open in 2017, which could work with Major League Soccer’s nebulous expansion timeline.
The league is currently on the adding a 20th team in New York. The league has no specific plans to expand beyond 20 teams, but has had exploratory discussions with several cities in the Southeast, including Orlando and Miami.
MLS seems to be flourishing in the U.S. The league recently broke the 6-million mark for the first time, an increase of almost 2 million since 2010, according to mlsattendance.blogspot.com. Average attendance for games was 18,801. By comparison, the Hawks averaged 15,199 fans in 33 home games last year.

Atlanta Silverbacks on the hunt for new soccer talent

As an indicator of just how seriously the Silverbacks are looking at the new season they are holding combine events outside of the state. With one in California and one in England, the Silverbacks are determined to find some good talent to supplement the players already on the roster.
Silverbacks Head Coach, Brian Haynes, and Eric Wynalda, advisor to the Silverbacks, will attend each of the U.S based combines to evaluate any players while Coach Haynes will work with several European based soccer organizations to assess the talent at the combine in England.
The actual locations and dates of the combines are:
December 7-9 at Accrington and Rossendale College (Lancashire, England)
December 13-14 at Atlanta Silverbacks Park (Atlanta, GA)
January 5-6 at Atlanta Silverbacks Park (Atlanta, GA)
January 26-27 at Newbury Park High School (Thousand Oaks, CA)
This is not a new initiative for the Silverbacks. Over the last two years they have identified some great talent including current Silverbacks goalkeeper, Joe Nasco.
Interested players should be at least 18 years old and should go to the Silverbacks website for more information about registration.
