Georgia FC United in the Community-Backpacks For School Project

FC Georgia United, working in conjunction with The New House Of Refuge, donated 50 backpacks full of school supplies. The New House Of Refuge of Atlanta (http://www.thenewhouseofrefuge.org) works to aid “the less fortunate, single parent homes, and to help those in need of goods and compassion”. The children enjoyed an evening of pizza while each received their backpack.


Special thanks for members John Kaziow, James Abrahart (GIS), Mary Mastrogiovanni, and Pete Kealy for helping to purchase the many items needed to fill the backpacks, and delivering the packs – and as always to our members who stepped up with individual donations.

FC Georgia United is a charitable organization whose members have a common interest in playing soccer. Male members are all 50+, with many in their 60’s and even 70’s. Our lady members are 40 yrs+. Future Stars Soccer Academy Camp Soars This Summer, Expands by 30 Percent

   
Founded in 2002, Future Stars Soccer Academy (FSSA) enters its 14th summer, engaging in exceptional soccer training at one of the largest soccer facilities in the Southeast.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA JULY 28, 2015
Located on more than 110 acres on Oglethorpe University campus, campers play and learn on the outstanding facilities this school has to offer.
The camp has seen tremendous growth since its inception. Starting with 12 eager kids for one week, the camp has grown to more than 400 players this past year. In partnership with Black Bear Design, a regional campaign to boost registration was launched throughout the Atlanta area to include flyer canvasing, internet ads, social media messaging, and pay-per-click marketing. As a result, registration increased by more than 30%. With the tremendous increase in participation, the camp will extend to four weeks for the summer of 2016 in an effort to accommodate every soccer player who wants to participate.

FSSA founders Jon Akin – currently serving as the head men’s soccer coach at Oglethorpe – and Gilbert Jean-Baptiste – Oglethorpe’s former assistant coach – have led high-quality training sessions designed to equip aspiring soccer players with the technical, physical and mental tools to succeed. All programs were created by former professional players and are taught by Future Stars staff, with assistance from current and former college players.
Two different camps schedules are available: full day camps run from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., and half day camps start at 9 a.m. and go to 11:45 a.m. Kids of all ages and skill level are welcome, ranging from 4-18.

“The essence of the camp is to build strong fundamentals and facets of the game through technical skills and tactical awareness. We strive for excellent technique to master the game, while reinforcing the enjoyment of playing one of the most popular sports in the world,” said founder Jon Akin. “We want to enhance skills and encourage kids to play the game for life, while getting better along the way.”

FSSA has a strong presence in the Greater Atlanta metro area. Because so many of these players come to camp through local clubs and organizations, FSSA reciprocates by donating back a portion of the camp proceeds to club scholarship funds throughout the area.

More than 2,000 tickets have been sold in the past week for the semifinals of the Gold Cup at the Georgia Dome, increasing the total number sold to more than 51,000 as expectations increase that the U.S. and Mexico will advance in the soccer tournament.
The games will be played at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 22.
The U.S., which won Group A, will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Baltimore. They will play either the third-place team from Group B or Group C. The winner will advance to the semifinals. The U.S. hasn’t played in Atlanta since 1977.

Mexico has one game left in its group against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday in Charlotte. Mexico is currently second in the group with four points, two behind Trinidad and Tobago. With a win, “El Tri” will top the group with seven points.
Should Mexico win, tickets sales for the semifinals are expected to increase again even though there is still a quarterfinal game on Saturday in either Baltimore or East Rutherford, N.J.
The record for the number of tickets sold for a soccer match in the city is 68,212, set last year when Mexico played Nigeria.

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State soccer team and head coach Rob King have announced the 2015 schedule, which features matchups with a number of 2014 NCAA Tournament teams as well as 11 home games at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

"We are very excited about this year's schedule," said King. "We have 11 home games on the slate including our exhibition games, which is always great to play in front of our fans at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. This schedule combines great local competition and rivalries, plus match ups against several NCAA tournament opponents. Out of the gate our first home exhibition is against SEC power Auburn. They provide an immediate look for our new players at the speed and physical nature of elite level NCAA DI soccer. We follow that with an instate matchup against perennial D2 national power Columbus State."

KSU will be looking to get back to the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference after a strong finish to the 2014 campaign propelled the Owls to the A-Sun Conference Championship final, starting with pair of preseason exhibition matches at home against Southeastern Conference foe and 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Auburn on Aug. 13 for First Responders Night. The Owls then take on Columbus State on Aug. 16 in conjunction with the first-ever Kennesaw State Fall Festival. 

The Owls will be staying close to home to start the season as the 2015 slate officially kicks off with their home opener against Alabama A&M on Aug. 21, followed by a short trip to Atlanta, Ga., to face off against regional rival Georgia State on Aug. 24.

Back-to-back home contests against Chattanooga on Aug. 28 and Clayton State on Aug. 30 round out the first month of the season, before the Owls head on the road for the first three weeks of September.

The Owls will spend four games of their five-game road swing in the state of South Carolina starting with a trip to Charleston for the Charleston Cup, taking on College of Charleston on Sept. 4 and The Citadel on Sept. 6. KSU then heads to Greenville for a Sept. 11 match against Furman, before a clash with SEC opponent South Carolina in Columbia on Sept. 14, a highlight of the nonconference slate as the Gamecocks advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Florida State a season ago.

KSU wraps up its road trip in Clarksville, Tenn., against Austin Peay on Sept. 18, before returning home to battle regional rival Samford on the KSU Marietta campus on Sept. 20.

"Our non-conference schedule includes our rivalry game with Georgia State, plus great competition from schools in our surrounding states of Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas. Our road game versus South Carolina will provide the opportunity to take on a nationally ranked program that went deep into the NCAA tournament last season."

A-Sun Conference action begins at home for the Owls on Sept. 26 with Youth Night and Camper Reunion Night against Lipscomb, before taking on the newest member of the A-Sun, NJIT, in the two teams' first-ever meeting on International Night on Oct. 3 with free soccer scarves being handed out for the first 300 fans at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

KSU then heads down to south Florida for matches against Stetson on Oct. 9 in Deland, followed by a date with reigning A-Sun Champion Florida Gulf Coast on Oct. 11 in Fort Myers.

North Florida and Jacksonville will make the trip to Kennesaw the following weekend as the Owls host the Ospreys on Oct. 16, before taking on the Dolphins on Oct. 18 for the Pink Game, with fans encouraged to wear pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.

Conference play wraps up for the Owls at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., on Oct. 25, before KSU concludes its 2015 regular season with senior night against Emory on Oct. 27 as the Owls honor lone senior Hannah Churchill in her last regular season match at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

"We begin our conference schedule with two home games, including a rematch with Lipscomb of the 2014 A-Sun tournament semifinal, followed by welcoming NJIT to our stadium for the first time. We then go on the road for two crucial games against Stetson, followed by a rematch of last year's tournament final against FGCU. Our final home conference games are against UNF and JU. We performed against JU very well last season, but feel we have a little to prove against UNF. Our final games include USC Upstate on the road, before we close out the season with Emory and Senior Night."

The 2015 edition of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship opens with quarterfinal matches on Oct. 31 at home sites, followed by the semifinals and final on Nov. 6 and 8 on the campus of the regular season champion.

The Owls return 13 letterwinnners, including six starters, from a team that finished as 2014 A-Sun Championship runners-up and wrapped the season with an 8-11-1 record. Along those returning are A-Sun First-Team honoree Brittney Reed as well as second-teamer Maggie Gaughan and A-Sun All-Freshmen team member Abby Roth. KSU will also welcome in nine talented newcomers to an already motivated veteran squad for the 2015 campaign.

     49-acre parcel in Marietta, Ga., is being eyed as the possible training facility for Atlanta's new Major League Soccer team, Atlanta United FC.
    The property is made up of two apartment complexes on Franklin Road recently purchased by Marietta, reports Marietta Daily Journal.
    Woodlands Park and its 24 acres were purchased for $7.8 million, while Flagstone Village and its 25 acres were purchased for $11.6 million, the paper said.

    Marietta is buying and tearing down apartment buildings on Franklin Road in an effort to attract new development. Crime and shabby apartments in the Franklin Road corridor have been blamed for dragging down development in that area and on property along Delk Road near Interstate 75.The area is being rejuvenated, aided by the Braves stadium ‘halo effect,’ Cobb officials say. The Franklin Road corridor is two highway exits up from the new Braves mixed-use development in Cobb County's Cumberland area.
    Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin said Monday the team would like the training facility up and running by the end of 2016, so he expects Arthur Blank, the owner of both the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC, to soon make a decision on the property soon, MDJ reports.
    “The ball’s completely in their court. … They’re giving us a fair look, and they’re looking at supposedly three other places, but we might be in the top two,” Tumlin said. “I can’t speak for somebody else, but I think the sooner they make a decision, the better for them. We’re just willing sellers.”
    Atlanta Business Chronicle reported in March Atlanta's Major League Soccer team had launched a search for a site to house its new training facility.
    The site could range from a minimum of 15 acres with four fields to as many as 40 acres with more than a dozen fields, MLS Atanta president (now Atlanta United FC) Darren Eales said at the time.

    Eales did not rule out the possibility of the 165-acre former General Motors plant in Doraville. Another possibility is Fort McPherson near East Point, where Tyler Perry has a contract to buy 330 of the fort’s 488 acres.The first soccer season starts in 2017, in the new $1.4 billion stadium the team will share with the Falcons. The stadium is downtown next to the team's current Georgia Dome home.
    A long-anticipated deal to sell producer and actor Tyler Perry a large portion of Fort McPherson in southwest Atlanta won final approval June 26.

    U.S. Women's Soccer team coming to Chattanooga for game vs Costa Rica

    CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -Following the World Cup tournament in Canada this summer, the U.S. Women's National Team will play a game versus Costa Rica at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga. The game, called an international friendly, will be played Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Tickets go on sale to the public Wednesday, July 1, at 12 p.m. ET through ussoccer.com and by phone at 1-800-745-3000. 

    The U.S. WNT is currently in the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a game versus China on Friday in Ottawa, Canada. If they win that game and the semifinal game, USA will play in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 5.

    Costa Rica is out of the World Cup after losing to Brazil and tying Korea and Spain.

    The last time the U.S. WNT was in Chattanooga was 1997 when it played Sweden in front of more than 13,000 fans. At the time that was the largest crowd to ever watch a soccer game in the state of Tennessee. That game followed the gold medal in the 1996 Olympics but was two years before USA won the 1999 World Cup. The USA won 3-1 over Sweden with goals from soccer legends Tisha Venturini, Kristine Lilly, and Michelle Akers. Mia Hamm and Brandy Chastain were also on the team that came to Chattanooga.

    Finley Stadium is home to Chattanooga FC soccer team which is a member of the National Premier Soccer League. The NPSL is sanctioned by the USASA as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), and FIFA.  
    When asked how many fans to expect at the game, CFC general manager Sean McDaniel said, "How many fans will Finley Stadium hold?"
    "This game is just the beginning of a long-term relationship with US Soccer, McDaniel added. "We're planning to bring many more international matches to Chattanooga in the coming years."
    Finley Stadium holds 20,668 and organizers expect fans from Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, and other parts of the region to attend. Nashville is expected to set the attendance record with U.S. Men's National Team game on July 3 versus Guatemala. More than 25,000 tickets are already sold for that game on Friday, July 3.

    Atlanta’s soon-to-be Major League Soccer franchise is looking for a site to build a training academy, and Marietta is in the running.
    The team wants 50 acres of open land in the metro Atlanta area to build facilities for its youth team and its first team, as well as 15 soccer fields to benefit the local community. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that some 90 acres of land along Franklin Road are prime for redevelopment after Marietta’s government bought up dilapidated apartment complexes and razed them to jump start the area economy.
    Any construction on a facility should be done by December of 2016, in advance of the MLS team’s first season in 2017, the AJC reports.

    What about the Georgia State Inaugural All Star Games we have been hearing about?That’s June 6th also. Our own Running Eagles (Open Comp) will face off against ADASL at 2pm.     Champions League Party Recap


    We would like to thank all the people who came out to Mac McGee's in Roswell last Saturday afternoon to view the Champion"s League Final between Barcelona and Juventus. We also celebrated the Coronation of Mark Stevens for having won the Predict The Score EPL championship. He not only won the Atlanta League but also won the World Title. This is his fifth year winning in Atlanta and the second World Title.

    Predict the Score is a global competition with leagues through out the world. People compete to predict the score and scorers of the English Premier League. The local Atlanta league is sponsored by the Soccer Reptile's Atlanta Soccer News.

    The party was put on by Media First and Panorama Press in conjunction with Mac McGee's in Roswell . "We would like to thank Mac McGee's for their support in putting this great event for us. We were very happy with the support from teams from all over Atlanta. It is always special when people the Atlanta soccer community gets together." said Jim Caruso from Media First.

    fter being named head coach of the Georgia Gwinnett College women’s soccer program earlier this year, Chris Kouns added to his staff on Friday with the hiring of former NCAA Division I standout Andrea Kaminski as his assistant coach. Kaminski both played for and coached alongside Kouns previously.
    “As soon as I took the job, I knew that I needed Andrea to join me,” Kouns said. “Not only is she a terrific coach, but she’s also a great person and role model. Andrea and I have had a relationship that allows her to speak her mind in everything, from lineup suggestions to recruiting and team matters. I am a better coach because of her.”
    Kaminski, who played for Kouns when he was an assistant at the University of Cincinnati, had spent the last four seasons on his staff at Capital University (Ohio), helping the team to three conference championships and a berth into the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 2013. She worked primarily with the goalkeepers and defense in her time with the Crusaders, helping keeper Maggie Donnellan collect three consecutive conference goalkeeper of the year awards as well as a pair of all-region honors and an NSCAA All-America designation.
    “I’m really excited to be joining GGC,” Kaminski said. “I have had a great relationship with Chris, and I’m really excited to get to know the ladies and get ready for this season. I’m a very competitive person, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to help push the program forward.”
    Kaminski boasts of a wealth of playing experience, beginning with a record-breaking career in goal for Cincinnati. In her four years with the Bearcats, she logged 6,713 minutes in goal and graduated as the school’s all-time saves leader, leading the Big East Conference in the category in both 2006 and 2009.
    Following her collegiate career, Kaminski competed for the West Virginia Illusion of the W-League and spent time coaching for former U.S. Women’s National Team coach Tony DiCicco with his Soccer Plus Goalkeeping School.
    Kaminski graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2010 with a degree in special education.
