Boys soccer blog: Second-round games to watch
Here are some of the stories to watch in this week’s second round of the boys soccer state tournaments:
Class AAAAA
Parkview, which plays at 1-AAAAA top seed Tift County, and Wheeler, which plays at 3-AAAAA top seed Camden County, will find out if the road is an equalizer. Tift (13-1-2) has scored 19 goals in its last two games. Parkview beat Tift 1-0 in the 2011 quarterfinals, and the Panthers, led by keeper Diego Casillas and sophomore forward Jonathon Jarrett, are 6-1-1 in games decided by one goal or less.

The most trophy-laden matchup in AAAA is Lakeside-DeKalb at McIntosh. The two teams have nine state championship between them, though McIntosh has had much more recent state playoff success. For intrigue, it’s tough to beat Marist at Forest Park. Marist is 13-6 but has played the tougher overall schedule. Still, upstart Forest Park (15-2) can take its place as a serious contender with a win over the War Eagles at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

Top-ranked Paideia, which faces Mount Paran, has won 16 straight and has allowed just two goals in that span. Defending champion Walker (10-8) travels to Augusta to face Aquinas, which has allowed two goals to just one opponent – Class AAAA Greenbrier – and has 11 shutouts in 16 games.
