Berry soccer: Lady Vikings welcome nine newcomers

Berry College women's soccer coach Lorenzo Canalis announced Tuesday that nine newcomers will enroll at Berry and continue their educational and athletic careers at the school beginning this fall. Canalis also announced that junior Allison Gehron, who was a member of Berry's soccer team two years ago, but was unable to play due to injury, has returned to the Lady Vikings after transferring to Tennessee-Chattanooga a year ago.

The nine newcomers are all freshmen, and come from all over the southeastern region of the United States. The list includes Jillian McDonnell (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison HS) and Rebecca Proschansky (Atlanta/Riverwood International Charter School) from Georgia; Mallory Campbell (Franklin, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), Sara Dillon (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy of Knoxville) and Julianna Valk (Kingsport, Tenn./Sullivan South HS) from Tennessee; Emily Kaelin (Milton, Fla./Milton HS) and Erika Olson (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island HS) from Florida; Kari Detscher (Cedar Bluff, Ala./Cedar Bluff HS) from Alabama and Anna McNulty (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) from Kentucky.

MALLORY CAMPBELL

Fr. – Defense – Franklin, Tenn. – Brentwood Academy

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tenn. …four-year starter at Brentwood…team captain as a senior…helped lead team to quarterfinals of state tournament all four years at Brentwood…also played high school and AAU basketball…member of the National Honor Society…has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, and was a member of Brentwood's Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle…competed in interscholastic math competitions…a member of Youth Legislature.

Coach Canalis on Mallory Campbell: "Mallory has great physical presence and is very strong. She was switched to central defender her senior season after starting as the right fullback the previous three years. Her experience and smart play will be a good addition to our defense, which has lost two starters to graduation."

KARI DETSCHER

Fr. – Forward/Midfield – Cedar Bluff, Ala. – Cedar Bluff HS – West Metro Freedom

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Cedar Bluff High School in Cedar Bluff, Ala. …as a member of West Metro Freedom, helped lead team to the Nike Cup championship and the finals of the Atlanta Cup and the President Cup in 2011…selected for the Atlanta Silverbacks' Super-Y U-15 team…received most ODP nominations from opposing coaches for Super-Y South Atlantic Division…member of Cedar Bluff's 2010 Alabama Class 1A state track championship team…qualified individually for the state championship in the one-mile run…did not play high school soccer at Cedar Bluff…attended South Paulding High School in Douglasville, Ga., as a freshman, lettering on the soccer team.

Coach Canalis on Kari Detscher: "Kari can help us in midfield as well as up top. She is quick, good in 1-v-1 challenges and will contribute to our team's offensive competitiveness."

SARA DILLON

Fr. – Midfield/Forward – Knoxville, Tenn. – Christian Academy of Knoxville – FC Alliance 94 Gold

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Christian Academy of Knoxville, where she transferred for her senior year of high school…attended McMinn County High School first three years…as a senior, helped lead CAK to the 2011 Tennessee Class 2A state championship…led the state tournament in scoring her senior year…earned All-District, All-Region and All-State honors as a senior…at McMinn County, was a three-time All-District and All-Region performer…during her MCHS career, earned team's Rookie of the Year, Best Offensive Player, Best Center Midfielder and Hustle awards…three-year starter and team captain at McMinn County…named to Best of Preps first team…helped FC Alliance 94 Gold club team to the 2010 state finals as the team's starting center midfielder…was named 2010 Tennessee State Division II Tournament MVP after leading the division in scoring…class of 2012 valedictorian…Kiwanis Best All-Around Student (2008-11) and Kiwanis Highest GPA (2008-11) honoree…an English Merit Scholar…a United States Academy All-American scholar…Discus All-Around Student Award winner…earned a Who's Who National Mathematics recognition…two-time statewide Mu Alpha Theta math competition winner…vice president of National Honor Society…secretary of Mu Alpha Theta…vice president of J-Teens Service Club…four-year student council member.

Coach Canalis on Sara Dillon: "Sara can play equally well as an attacking midfielder right behind the striker, or as a striker herself. She can find an open teammate going to the goal or finish herself, as shown by her many high school accomplishments."

ALLISON GEHRON

Jr. – Midfield – Chattanooga, Tenn. – Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences – East Ridge Soccer Club

College: Attended Berry in 2010-11, but did not play due to injury…transferred to Tennessee-Chattanooga in Fall, 2011 before returning to Berry in spring, 2012….originally committed to NCAA Division I Wofford out of high school.

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences…scored 52 goals and dished out 48 assists during her high school career…four-year starter and two-year team captain…scored 14 goals and assisted on 12 others as a senior…earned District MVP and Chattanooga Best of Preps honors during a senior season in which she led her team to the its first ever regional title…scored 17 goals and dished out 14 assists as a junior…team MVP, All-District, Chattanooga Best of Preps and TSWA All-State honors as a junior, while leading team to a district crown…team's outstanding offensive player as a sophomore…team's outstanding defensive players as a freshman…member of the Paideia Honor Society and the Student Government Association at CSAS…played club soccer for East Ridge Soccer Club.

Coach Canalis on Allison Gehron: "We have Allie back and she is now fully rehabbed from a previous injury. Once she reaches match fitness, she will be a player to reckon with at our level."

EMILY KAELIN

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Milton High School in Milton, Fla. …four year letter winner on the soccer team at Milton…team captain as a senior…also ran track at Milton…was MHS' top mile runner all four years…qualified for the regional track meet in 10th and 11th grades…played club soccer for Futbol Club of Santa Rosa…an honor student at Milton…served as class secretary in 10th and 11th grades, and class treasurer as a senior…member of Beta club…nominated for National Beta Scholarship…served as a math tutor and competed in math competitions…a member of Milton's Athletic Council…member of National Honors Society…member of Milton's Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle.

Coach Canalis on Emily Kaelin: "Emily exemplifies constant motion on the soccer field. She has had an outstanding cross country and track career and has put her experience to practical application in soccer. She can pass and finish equally well."

JILLIAN McDONNELL

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Harrison High School…attended Mt. Berry Soccer Academy for six consecutive years…team captain of North Atlanta Soccer Association club team…did not play high school soccer…active in high school yearbook, Beta club and orchestra.

Coach Canalis on Jillian McDonnell: "Jill has been hampered by injuries over the past few years, but with courage and determination is playing again and starting to develop her true potential. I know her well from camp and am delighted she will be attending Berry."

ANNA McNULTY

Fr. – Midfield - Owensboro, Ky. – Owensboro Catholic HS – Omega SC Select Black

Prior to Berry: A graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School in Owensboro, Ky. …led entire state of Kentucky in assists as a senior and ranked fourth in the state in the same category as a sophomore…as a senior, earned All-State Class A Tournament, All-District and All-Region honors…Played for Kentucky ODP state team and played in the ODP Region II Camp from 2008-10…OCHS career record holder with 52 assists, single season record holder with 18 assists and single match record holder with five assists…four-year starter at OCHS…team captain as a junior and senior…played on various club teams over a nine-year span, including Omega SC Select Black U19, which was ranked 57th nationally…played in a pair of state championship games on the club level…four-year honor student…four-time member of the All-State Athletic Academic Team…member of the National Honors Society…student government officer…member of the drama club…member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes…has coached youth soccer…participates in Children Sunday Ministry…has been a Habitat for Humanity organizer.

ERIKA OLSON

Prior to Berry: Graduate of Fleming Island High School in Fleming Island, Fla. …played soccer and ran track at Fleming Island…won the 400 meter dash at the Clay County Track & Field Championship…finished third as a member of Fleming Island's 4x400 meter relay team in the regional championship…track team's Most Valuable Freshman…helped lead Westside Soccer Club to the 2012 Presidents Cup championship…Westside also won the championship at the Jekyll Island Preseason Tournament in 2010…WSC team also played in title match of 2011 Labor Day Shootout and 2009 First Coast Shootout.

Coach Canalis on Erika Olson: "Erika has the technique and determination to well on our team. I love her intensity and winning attitude."

REBECCA PROSCHANSKY

Fr. – Defender – Atlanta, Ga. – Riverwood International Charter School – Norcross Soccer Academy

Prior to Berry: Four year starter on the varsity soccer team at Riverwood International Charter School in Sandy Springs, Ga. …earned All-Area honors in 2010, 2011 and 2012…named team's best defender in 2010…earned Raider award in 2010…an honor student at RICS…plays club soccer for Norcross Soccer Academy in Norcross, Ga.

Coach Canalis on Rebecca Proschansky: "Rebecca is very good at anticipating play and defending with excellent change of speed. She is also a solid distributor from the back. She will significantly strengthen our defensive ability."

JULIANA VALK

Fr. – Midfield – Kingsport, Tenn. – Sullivan South High School – Fusion FC

Prior to Berry: A four-year starter at Sullivan South High School in Kingsport, Tenn. …team captain in 2011…earned Sullivan South's Wendy's High School Heisman award in 2011…first team All-District and honorable mention All-region in 2011…second team All-District in 2009 and 2010…honorable mention All-District in 2009…also earned the Coaches Award in 2009…played club soccer for Fusion FC from 2008-2011.

Coach Canalis on Juliana Valk: "Juliana is a true thinking midfielder that is keen at distributing and keeping possession. She is returning from a serious knee injury and we hope to have her fit by the fall. She can make a difference on our program."
