The North American Soccer League has named Matt Horth of the Atlanta Silverbacks as their Player of the Month for September. The NASL’s Player of the Month is chosen by a panel of soccer journalist scattered across North America and Puerto Rico.
Horth started out the season strong but hit a dry spot due to some early- to mid-season injuries. When Eric Wynalda and Brian Haynes took over the Atlanta Silverbacks and breathed new life into the team, Horth also seemed to come to life with the fresh coach and some new players. The 6-foot-3 forward was a near unanimous choice among the media for NASL Player of the Month after tallying four goals in five games during the month of September while his Silverbacks team went undefeated in five matches and finished the month with 3 wins and 2 draws.
“It’s always nice to be recognized, especially as the Player of the Month because I think it shows that I have been able to stay consistent and string together some solid performances,” Horth said. “At the same time, I owe a lot to my teammates and the hard work that they have put in, so I can’t take the honor all for myself. It’s still a nice achievement and I really appreciate the award.”
After raising his goal tally in 2012 to 10 from his 2011 total of 8 he has now scored 18 goals in 49 appearances for the club, putting him second all-time on the franchise scoring list.
