Two Georgia soccer alums are showcasing their skills – in goal, specifically – at the professional level, with former Bulldog keepers Ashley Baker and Michelle Betos playing for Sky Blue FC and Seattle Reign FC, respectively.
Baker made her pro debut with Sky Blue in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Boston Breakers. The 2012 Georgia grad stopped a penalty kick in the third minute of stoppage time, just after entering the game.
Baker was the 20th overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League college draft in January, taken in the third round. As a senior for UGA last fall, she posted 112 saves and recorded five shutouts in 19 starts and 1,786 minutes of action. She concluded her career with 305 career saves – fourth all-time.
Betos plays with Seattle Reign FC and is the back up to Hope Solo – the Women’s National Team’s starting keeper. She made her first for the squad start April 21 vs. Portland.
Betos was Georgia’s goalkeeper from 2006-09, and still ranks second in school history in wins (48) and third in both saves (316) and shutouts (26). Since graduation, she has played professionally in the United States with stints in Boston, Atlanta, and New York prior to joining the Reign, and recently played overseas with Apollon Ladies FC of the UEFA Champions League. She was a fifth-round pick in the 2013 NWSL supplemental draft, going 34th overall.
In its first season, the NWSL is the top professional women’s league in the United States.
