Add Carlos Tevez to the list of players French club Paris Saint-Germain has pursued but failed to sign.
After missing out on David Beckham and Alexandre Pato, PSG set its sights on Tevez, who hasn't played for Manchester City since September. Man City coachCarlo Ancelotti and PSG sporting director Leonardo met with the player’s adviser, Kia Joorabchian, in Paris last week, but could not broker a deal.
“We’ve ended the negotiations," said Leonardo to sports daily L’Equipe o its website on Tuesday. “So we’re stopping. It’s over.”
PSG leads Montpellier by three points atop the French league but may have run out of options in its quest to sign a major star, though the European transfer window is open for a few more days.
“There aren’t many opportunities left and we’re not going to splash out,” Leonardo said. “We’re already fine as we are. We have a competitive squad." - Read the whole story...Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp appeared in a London court Tuesday to stand trial in a case accusing him of concealing a foreign bank account from British tax authorities while manager of Portsmouth. According to prosecutor John Black, Redknapp claimed not to know how $295,000 made in two payments from Portsmouth arrived in his Monaco bank account, despite him flying to the principality in 2002 to open the account. Black contends each payment was an “off-record bonus” or “bung,” a British term used to mean a bribe. Former Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric is accused of making the payments during the first of Redknapp's two stints with the club (2002-04 and 2005-08).
Redknapp denied taking a “bung” in a Feb. 2009 conversation with a journalist, according to a transcript read to London’s Southwark Crown Court on the second day of the trial. “It’s nothing to do with a bung -- it’s paid by the chairman,” Redknapp told a reporter with the now-defunct News of the World. "If it was something dodgy I would have gone over there and brought it back in a brief case."
The court heard Monday that Redknapp did not mention the account’s existence during an investigation by Britain’s tax authority over his transfer dealings at West Ham, which he managed between 1994 and 2001. A 300,000-pound bonus Redknapp received from the sale of now-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand to Leeds from West Ham prompted that investigation. In November of 2007, while manager of Portsmouth, Redknapp was arrested, and existence of the account in Monaco came to light the following year.
Charges in the current case are that Mandaric paid $145,000 into Redknapp’s Monaco bank account in May 2002, prompted byPeter Crouch’s sale from Portsmouth to Aston Villa, and another $150,000 two years later to avoid paying income tax and national insurance. Mandaric is currently chairman of Division One (third division) club Sheffield Wednesday. Both men have denied the charges.

The veteran midfielder, who spent five seasons in two stints with the Galaxy in an eight-year MLS career that followed spells with big clubs in England, Germany and Portugal, was unveiled as a new assistant coach when L.A. opened its preseason camp Monday at Home Depot Center.
“Bruce called me a month ago, put it out there,” said Kirovski, who last season played just 244 minutes over 13 regular-season games and saw action in 21 first-team games, all competitions and friendlies. “Actually, I was really excited, and it was a great opportunity, and I love being around the club. It was a no-brainer for me.”
“I had to get him off the field somehow ...,” joked Arena, who brought Kirovski in as he began his rebuild following the 2008 season. “He's obviously a very experienced guy, he knows our club, he knows the way we do things. He's prepared himself to get into coaching. He's earned his coaching license. I think it's a good transition for Jovan, and I think he'll be a great addition to our staff.”
Kirovski, 35, replaces Gregg Berhalter, who served as player/assistant coach last year, retired as a player at season's end and has become head coach of Swedish club Hammarby. - Read the whole story...Manchester City assistant coach David Platt has hinted that the club will reluctantly accept Mario Balotelli's four-match suspension. The English FA charged the Italian striker with violent conduct after appearing to stamp deliberately on Scott Parker during Sunday's 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. He will automatically receive a four-match ban unless City successfully appeals.
Platt accepted the slow-motion replays of the incident "do not look good."
"We are likely to be without a player for four games," said Platt.
Man City failed to overturn a four-match suspension for Vincent Kompany earlier this month for a far less obvious incident against Manchester United. - Read the whole story... |
