North Georgia men's soccer pulls out late victory

DAHLONEGA -– For the second consecutive game, sophomore Daniel Bowlt found the back of the net for a game-winner, this time with just under three minutes remaining to give the University of North Georgia Nighthawks a 2-1 non-conference victory over King (Tenn.) University. The win was the team's second consecutive and third on the season.
King struck first at the 17:49 mark with a goal from Thomas Dube, with the assist coming from Eric Wilkening. However, that would be the last time the Tornado found the net due to a stellar performance from Kris Alonso and the Nighthawk defense. The senior goalkeeper finished with six saves on the night.
Just twenty seconds into the second half, an energized UNG squad responded with an equalizer from freshman forward Eddie Hurst. The goal would come after his first shot hit the crossbar following a feed by fellow freshman Matt Shaftoe. Hurst would clean up the rebound and even the score at 1-1.
As the potential of extra time came into play, Bowlt was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. With only 2:20 remaining in the game, he drilled the eventual game-winner around the KU wall and into the top right corner.
"Dan (Bowlt) is 3-3 in three games. At halftime I told the team that we can't just wait for our center back to step up and score. We have to raise up our energy level and our ability to play the game to score," said UNG head coach Patrice Parris. "Dan, hitting that free kick, I'll take that any day of the week because he's a good player and he's going to be a very good player, future captain for us. For him to put the dagger in was outstanding."
The game clinching goal was Bowlt's team-leading third on the season and Parris hopes that the recent success will carry over into UNG's next game, which will begin an important stretch of Peach Belt Conference games for the Nighthawks.
"The goal today was to try and win back to back games for to gain more confidence heading into Clayton State," said Parris. "Clayton State is a rival game and it's always a close game, always goes down to the wire and us being young, we need all the confidence going into conference to try and lock up a conference tournament spot."
After being outshot 10-6 in the first half, UNG would turn up the offensive pressure and outshoot the Tornado 17-1 after intermission.
UNG (3-10-0, 1-3 PBC) will resume PBC action on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. when the Nighthawks travel to Morrow to take on Clayton State.
