Ally McCoist praises 'special mentality' of Steven Davis - Scotsman.com

Rangers manager Ally McCoist paid tribute to Steven Davis for the way he has coped with his new role as captain and says his leadership was crucial to claiming victory over Aberdeen.
The Northern Ireland international has been wearing the armband in the absence of David Weir, who has been sidelined through injury since last month's Champions League qualifier against Malmo.

his team-mates come through a tough afternoon against the Dons at Ibrox yesterday as Rangers ground out a 2-0 win to remain top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

He said: "I thought it was a captain's performance, I really did. I had a wee word with Steven at half-time because I think, the way the game was going, there were a few players looking for a little bit of help and guidance.

"Steven is one of those boys that everybody looks to and I don't think he let anybody down because he attempted to run the game and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

"The best way to describe it was that I thought it was a Rangers captain's performance, to be honest." The Rangers manager added: "People might not realise it but the Old Firm is a difficult place to play. There are a lot of players who have not been able to play at the Old Firm. It takes a special mentality. I would have to say that I think Steven Davis has got it."

Meanwhile, Alejandro Bedoya relished the opportunity to play alongside United States team-mates Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra for the first time with Rangers.

The midfielder came off the bench with just over 20 minutes to go to make his debut for his new club following his switch from Swedish side Orebro. He said: "It was cool. I don't know if it has ever been done before where three Americans have all played for the same team professionally like this. To play at a club like Rangers is a great honour for all of us and I'm just enjoying it.

"I got a couple of balls from Mo and it was just like being in the national team with him. The United States national team fans will be trying to stream the games and there is definitely a lot more interest with three of us playing here. It's great for us and it's great for a club like Rangers."
